Final Fantasy Resonance’s combat starts from a deliberate design question: what happens when you combine Final Fantasy V’s job system with Final Fantasy VI’s distinctive characters? Producer Keisuke Nakashima says that was the team’s first concept. The answer, as described so far, pairs character-linked choices with transferable abilities, turn-order planning and stagger-based enemy disruption. That explains the system’s intended appeal; it does not yet establish how the complete game feels, because the full release is still ahead.
What Square Enix means by the FFV-and-FFVI experiment
In a Kotaku interview published October 2, 2026, producer Keisuke Nakashima described the starting point as: “what if we take the job system from Final Fantasy 5 and the unique characteristics of each character in Final Fantasy 6, what would that look like?” He said the team then reexamined and incorporated a stagger system. In his account, the goal was to preserve characters’ distinct identities while giving players more room to customize them. Kotaku’s interview with Nakashima is the source for that design rationale.

That is more precise than calling Resonance a simple blend of two older battle systems. FFV supplies the reference point for adaptable roles; FFVI supplies the reference point for characters who feel individually defined. Resonance’s Vision abilities and cost limit are the bridge between those ideas, while stagger and the turn timeline add a separate tactical layer.
How Visions let players customize character abilities
In the documented system, players equip Visions and unlock abilities by using them in battle. Once learned, an ability remains available when a character switches to another Vision, provided the resulting loadout stays within the ability cost limit. Some ability combinations also create synergies. Square Enix’s PlayStation Blog explanation of the combat describes the Vision, ability-learning and cost-limit mechanics.

- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
This structure separates a character’s chosen Vision from the abilities they have already learned. The result is room to adjust a build without making customization unlimited: players must decide which learned abilities are worth fitting under the cap. That is the clearest mechanical connection to the job-system idea, though the available description does not establish how broad the final game’s ability catalogue is or how restrictive the cap will feel across its campaign.
Why stagger and turn order make battles more tactical
The battle interface shows the upcoming turn order, so players can see whose action is approaching. Attacking an enemy’s stagger gauge can interrupt that plan: reducing the gauge prevents the enemy’s next action and lowers its defense. After a Sweeping Stagger, the Extra Phase can allow a Vision-specific Resonance move, according to the PlayStation Blog combat guide.

- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
Those elements give the system a rhythm beyond choosing attacks from a menu. A player can consider whether to invest in a build, when to pressure an enemy’s stagger gauge, and how that disruption changes the visible turn sequence. The documented mechanics explain how these decisions can interact; they do not, by themselves, prove that the encounters are consistently balanced or enjoyable.
Resonance is also a console adaptation of Brave Exvius
The FFV-and-FFVI framing is one part of the game’s design story. Final Fantasy Resonance is based on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and Nakashima told Nintendo Wire that the team wanted to make a new console game while retaining the mobile game’s appeal, changing systems to suit console play. Kotaku reports that the story was retained but reorganized: some character-episode material was integrated into the main plot, battles were reworked, and new story scenes were added.

- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
The presentation follows the same adaptation effort. Official materials describe the look as HD-2D. The PlayStation Blog says cinematics render 3D CG in pixel form; director Hiroto Furuya told Kotaku that the team built a 3D environment, placed pixel characters in it, then added camera movement and post-effects. These are specific production choices, rather than evidence that the game reproduces the visual style of either FFV or FFVI.

A PlayStation 5 demo covering the entire first chapter is available, and its save data can carry over, according to the PlayStation Blog. The full game is scheduled for October 22, 2026 on consoles, with Steam listed for October 23. Square Enix lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC on its official product page.
Because the full game has not yet released as of October 7, 2026, a claim that it feels good throughout the campaign would go beyond what is established. The demo offers a chance to try the opening chapter, while the announced mechanics explain what the combat is aiming to do. A full-game verdict will depend on how those systems hold up across the complete adventure.
