Mare Synchronos is being wound down after its developer reportedly received a “legal inquiry” and, after consulting counsel, decided to end the project. The report also said new registration had closed and the client, server, and API repositories had been removed. The sender and legal basis of the inquiry have not been disclosed in the sources reviewed, so it cannot be attributed to Square Enix or described as a lawsuit or cease-and-desist.
What Mare Synchronos did
Mare Synchronos was a third-party FINAL FANTASY XIV plugin that synchronized visual modifications between players. PC Gamer described the service and reported that its Discord had just over 200,000 users at the time of its 2025 article. That is a publication-time audience figure, not a current user count or a measure of active users.

What the report does not establish
Neither the sender of the inquiry nor its demands or legal grounds are identified in the reviewed coverage. The wording “legal inquiry” is the reported description; the evidence does not establish that it was a cease-and-desist, lawsuit, or demand from Square Enix.

How Square Enix’s mod statement fits—and what it does not prove
On August 28, 2025, FINAL FANTASY XIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida published an official statement about mod use and culture. He explicitly framed it as a general discussion rather than action against one specific mod: “This post is not meant to target any one mod specifically, but I’d like to touch on the general subject of mods, their use, and the culture surrounding them.”
Yoshida said that changes visible to other players involve manipulation or rewriting of game files and described that as more problematic. He also discussed risks to other players, the intended game design, services, and legal compliance. These are Square Enix’s stated concerns about mod use generally; the statement does not establish that Square Enix sent Mare’s inquiry or explain the legal basis for the shutdown.

What remains undisclosed
The public account supports a limited conclusion: Mare’s developer reportedly chose to wind down the project after receiving a legal inquiry and consulting counsel. It does not reveal who made the inquiry, what it said, or whether the project’s reported 2025 status has changed since then.
