Final Fantasy XIV Patch 7.3 expanded visible headgear support for Viera and Hrothgar: Square Enix says that “a large number” of headgear items will now display when worn by either race. It is a rendering update for existing gear, not a new hat item—and it does not mean every hat or helmet works.
Can Viera and Hrothgar wear hats in Patch 7.3?
Yes. Patch 7.3, “The Promise of Tomorrow,” added visible support for a large number of headgear items on both Viera and Hrothgar. Previously hidden headgear can now appear on characters of those races when equipped. The update does not change what gear exists or guarantee that every item will render.

Does Patch 7.3 make every hat wearable?
No. The official wording is “A large number of headgear items will now display when worn by Viera and Hrothgar.” Square Enix does not give a compatibility percentage or an exhaustive item list in that note, so it is not possible to infer that all hats, helmets, or other headgear display.
#1 Best Overall
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
In practical terms, compatibility is item-specific: the patch broadens what can visibly render, but the cited notes do not identify which individual pieces are included. Check a particular item in-game rather than assuming that its category—or another similar item—guarantees support.
What about metallic headgear?
During the July 3, 2025 Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXXXVII preview, Square Enix said metallic headgear was not included in the initial rollout and that support was planned for a future update. That was a preview-stage statement, not confirmation of the current status after Patch 7.3 or later updates. The Patch 7.3 note itself does not settle whether metallic items were subsequently added.

Patch 7.3 also changed how some bangs appear
A separate adjustment in the official notes says, “Bangs will now be displayed when wearing headgear such as hoods, which previously hid them.” Square Enix qualifies that change with “Not applicable to certain gear.” This is a bangs-and-headgear adjustment, distinct from the race-specific expansion of visible headgear support for Viera and Hrothgar.
