A console may be sold at a slim margin or even below its cost to make, while another is priced to preserve hardware margin. And prices do not always fall with age: higher memory and storage costs can limit discounts or contribute to price increases.
What goes into a console’s price?
A modern console combines a custom-designed system with a processor, memory, storage, cooling, power delivery, a controller, and a chassis. Higher-performance components or more storage can raise the cost of the hardware. The retail price also reflects manufacturing, assembly, labor, shipping, and the work required to develop the system.

The World Intellectual Property Organization’s history of the original PlayStation describes parts, manufacturing, labor, shipping, and research and development as relevant costs in bringing a console to market. It also discusses marketing, distribution, publisher relationships, and platform strategy. WIPO’s account of how intellectual property laws shaped the PlayStation offers historical context, not a cost breakdown for today’s hardware.
A retail price does not reveal the exact bill of materials or profit on a particular console. Manufacturers do not generally publish complete, audited per-model cost breakdowns, so a precise claim about what a current model costs to make should be treated cautiously unless the company itself has disclosed it.

Why might a console be sold at little or no hardware profit?
A console is also a gateway to a platform. A manufacturer can price the hardware aggressively to attract players, then earn revenue over time from games, subscriptions, and other services. Lower hardware prices and discounts can help grow the number of people using that platform. This has been a common industry strategy, but it is not a rule followed by every company in every generation.
Microsoft said in June 2026 that consoles are typically sold for less than they cost to make. TrendForce has described software and subscription revenue as historically central to console profitability. Nintendo’s comments on Switch 2 pricing in 2025, by contrast, indicated that it aimed to maintain hardware margins, even if those margins were slimmer than software margins. These examples show why “all consoles are loss leaders” is too sweeping: pricing choices vary by company, product, and generation.

Why can console prices rise instead of falling?
It is tempting to expect a console to get cheaper as it ages, but that depends partly on component costs and a manufacturer’s pricing decisions. In a June 25, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said storage and memory prices had increased more than 2.5 times and announced global Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026. Microsoft said it had spent months working with suppliers. That is the company’s explanation for its own price changes; it should not be assumed to explain pricing for every brand or market.
TrendForce’s December 2, 2025 analysis projected that memory modules would account for 21–23% of total Nintendo Switch 2 hardware costs in 2026, and that memory would exceed 35% of total bill-of-materials costs for Sony and Microsoft by 2026. These are TrendForce estimates and projections, not audited disclosures by the manufacturers. The same analysis said rising memory costs could limit mid-cycle price cuts and forecast a 4.4% year-over-year decline in global game-console shipments in 2026. That shipment figure is a forecast, not a reported outcome.

Prices also vary with the model, region, retailer, and date. Sony’s U.S. recommended prices for PS5 models, effective April 2, 2026, were:
| Model | U.S. recommended price |
|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 |
Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement also listed UK recommended prices of £569.99, £519.99, and £789.99, respectively; European prices of €649.99, €599.99, and €899.99; and Japanese prices of ¥97,980, ¥89,980, and ¥137,980. What makes a premium console cost more?
A premium model can cost more because it includes more capable hardware or additional features. Sony announced the PS5 Pro in September 2024 with a 2 TB SSD, a GPU with 67% more compute units, and memory 28% faster than the then-current PS5. The company also highlighted advanced ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling. Sony said the Pro could render gameplay up to 45% faster; that is Sony’s claim, and the benefit depends on supported games and how they use the system’s features.

That launch price is distinct from Sony’s later U.S. recommended price of $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes its launch configuration and specifications.
Check what a particular package includes before comparing prices. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch configuration listed its Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive as a separate purchase. A digital-first model’s lower sticker price may not be the lower total for someone who wants physical games or Blu-ray playback.
How to compare console prices fairly
- Check the region and date. Compare current prices for the same market, and distinguish a recommended price from a retailer’s actual offer, including any applicable taxes.
- Compare equivalent hardware tiers. A standard model and a premium model may differ in performance, storage, and supported features. Consider whether the games you play use the premium features.
- Account for disc access. Confirm whether the console includes a disc drive or requires a separate purchase if you want physical games or disc playback.
- Consider the total you will spend. Include the console and any extra storage, disc drive, additional controller, games, or subscription you actually want.
- Check the condition of lower-cost options. For a refurbished or previously played console, verify the specific seller, condition, stock, warranty, and return terms. A lower upfront price is not automatically a better deal if coverage or return rights differ.
Microsoft has identified certified refurbished and previously played consoles as lower-cost purchase categories, but the details depend on the specific offer. Check its terms rather than assuming all refurbished systems have the same condition or protection. Microsoft’s June 2026 Xbox pricing announcement discusses its stated price changes and refurbished-console options.
