Why Game Publishers Avoid Releasing Games Alongside Major Blockbusters

Major game launches compete for players’ time, attention and spending. Here’s why publishers move dates, what release data suggests, and when a crowded window may still make sense.

Publishers often move a game away from a major blockbuster because players have limited time, attention and spending money—and the biggest launch can dominate coverage, creator schedules and storefront visibility. Avoiding that crowded window is a bet on being noticed, not a guarantee of better sales.

What publishers are trying to protect

A major release competes for more than the same purchase. It can occupy players for weeks, absorb gaming press and creator coverage, and shape what storefronts and social feeds highlight. A smaller game may therefore struggle to be discovered even if it targets a different genre.

There is also a budget and marketing problem. Players may postpone a purchase or spend their discretionary money on the blockbuster. Meanwhile, a publisher releasing during a busy season may need to spend more to earn visibility. Near Black Friday, a new full-price game can also sit beside recent releases already discounted.

The risk is greatest when games compete for the same audience. Genre, platform, age rating, publisher and release cohort all help define a product niche; a direct competitor on the same platform is not equivalent to a game aimed at a distinct audience. A blockbuster can even draw attention to a category rather than take it away.

What release-date data says about crowded seasons

Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2025 analyzes PC, PlayStation and Xbox data from 37 markets, excluding China and India, over 2021–2024. It reports that nearly half of single-player releases arrived between mid-August and mid-November. As summarized by The Game Business, the dataset counted 155 AAA single-player games; 45% launched in that late-summer-to-mid-November span, 23% in February and March, and 14% in Q2.

Newzoo found that August–November releases performed 34% worse on average than February–May releases in its analysis. After excluding Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy, late-year releases still underperformed by 25%. These are associations in an aggregated dataset, not proof that moving any particular game will improve its outcome. Results can reflect differences in title mix, franchise strength, platform, genre, price, marketing and support, as well as the influence of individual hits on averages.

  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

The Game Business also reported that average player counts over the first three months for April–June releases were comparable to those for September–November releases. That comparison suggests a quieter period can still attract players; it does not establish that Q2 is always a better launch window.

An earlier peer-reviewed study by Benjamin Engelstätter and Michael R. Ward, “Strategic timing of entry: evidence from video games” (2016), likewise found that publishers respond to competition within product niches and tend to avoid weeks when their niche is already well served. Its historical data suggest sales decay quickly after opening weekend and estimate that a one-week delay can improve revenue for a title facing above-average competition. That estimate is specific to the study’s data and conditions, not a universal modern rule.

How a calendar move works in practice

Devolver executives described moving an unnamed game a couple of weeks away from a crowded September 2023 cluster that included Mortal Kombat 1, Party Animals, Payday 3 and Lies of P. They wanted the game to have “space” rather than ask fans to choose among games they themselves wanted to play. Nigel Lowrie also described avoiding a big release or summer sale so a game could get “the oxygen it needs to have the best chance to succeed.”

That is a competitive scheduling decision, distinct from delaying a game because it needs more development work. Release readiness, patching, platform certification and the capacity to coordinate interviews, creators and player support can all affect a date. A calendar adjustment cannot compensate for an unfinished or poorly supported launch.

Why avoiding a blockbuster is not always the right move

Competition depends on audience overlap, not just how famous another game is. In September 2026, Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender said the PC management sim Blacksmith Master was deliberately scheduled for the launch date of GTA 6 because he expected little audience overlap. His statement is a publisher’s assessment of that particular game, not measured evidence that the strategy improved its results.

Nor is any apparently quiet window safe. An unexpected hit such as Palworld or Helldivers 2 can reshape the calendar after dates are chosen. Moving a game also trades one set of competitors for another, and a blockbuster may sometimes raise interest in games nearby rather than crowd them out. In 2025, former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij said publishers feared that releases immediately before or after GTA VI would have diminished sales; that reflects the scale of the perceived risk, not a guaranteed outcome for every title.

How to judge whether a release window is crowded

A publisher weighing a date has to compare the whole launch environment, not simply count the number of big games on the calendar. The relevant questions include:

  • Audience: Do the competing games share a genre, platform or likely player base?
  • Timing: Is the overlap on the same day, across launch week, or through a longer period when players may still be occupied?
  • Visibility: How much press, creator attention, marketing and storefront placement is already committed to the other releases?
  • Price: Will discounts on recent games make a new full-price release harder to sell?
  • Fit and readiness: Does the game have a seasonal or awards-related reason to launch then, and is it ready for release and post-launch support?
  • Uncertainty: Could an unannounced date change or surprise hit make the supposed opening less clear?

Release planning continues after launch day

A launch date is one part of a longer plan. Publishers may also weigh future discounts, downloadable content, updates and awards eligibility. A quieter opening can help a game earn attention, but lasting performance still depends on the game itself, how it is supported and how its audience responds. The practical goal is not to find a perfectly empty calendar; it is to choose a window whose competition and trade-offs give the game a credible chance to reach the players it is for.
