Before preordering, check the cancellation and refund rules for the exact store, region, and format you plan to use. Then verify when you will be charged, whether downloading or accessing the game changes your options, and what the edition actually includes. Digital storefronts and physical sellers do not share one universal preorder policy.
Start with the store, region, and format
Identify whether you are buying a digital copy through a console or PC storefront, or a physical copy from a retailer. Then read the terms that apply to that specific purchase in your region. A policy for one country, store, or format may not apply to another.

The examples below illustrate why checking matters; they are not a substitute for the current terms shown by your own storefront or seller. Nintendo’s cited support pages cover the Americas or U.S., PlayStation’s cited cancellation policy is for Canada, and Steam’s cited refund policy is its global policy page.
When will you be charged?
Do not assume a preorder is charged immediately—or only on release day. For Nintendo eShop digital preorders, Nintendo says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release. A Nintendo Store physical pre-purchase is different: Nintendo says it charges the full amount immediately, with shipping one to three business days after the release date. Before placing an order, look for the scheduled charge date, accepted payment methods, and what happens if payment fails. Nintendo says a failed payment can cancel an eShop preorder. For any store, make sure the payment method will still be valid when the charge is due.
Can you cancel, and what closes the window?
Find the cancellation cutoff and refund conditions before you pay. Check whether the deadline is tied to release day, the payment date, a download, streaming, or some other action. A preorder button does not guarantee that you can cancel at any time.
Nintendo eShop digital preorders
Nintendo’s Americas support FAQ says a digital preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded; that may be up to seven days before release. Preloading makes a non-playable version available in advance, and the game requires a release-time update before it can be played. The FAQ also says bonus download codes are provided only after payment is processed and the title is preloaded. Because Nintendo’s U.S. digital refund page describes Nintendo Account service payments, including pre-purchases, as final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes otherwise or applicable law requires otherwise, check the specific current cancellation terms for your region rather than treating either statement as a universal rule. PlayStation Store in Canada
Under PlayStation Store’s Canada policy, if you have not started downloading or streaming the main part of a preorder, the cancellation window depends on when you paid. A preorder paid more than 14 days before release may be canceled up to release; one paid 14 days or less before release may be canceled up to 14 days after payment. Starting the main download or stream generally removes cancellation eligibility unless the item is faulty. Automatic downloads may start if enabled, so check your settings and the policy before the download begins. Elsewhere, consult the local PlayStation policy. Steam
Steam’s standard refund policy generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. For an unreleased preorder that cannot be played before release, you may request a refund any time before release; the 14-day and two-hour period starts on release. If a game offers Early Access or Advanced Access before release, that playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam says you can still request a refund outside the stated conditions, but approval is not guaranteed. Check Early Access and preorder bonuses
Separate the advertised release date from any Early Access or Advanced Access period. If you can play before the standard release, find out when access begins and whether that time affects cancellation or refund eligibility; Steam’s two-hour limit, for example, counts pre-release playtime.

Compare editions by their included content rather than labels such as “Deluxe” or “Ultimate.” Before paying, verify:
- What each edition actually includes, and whether the extras matter to you.
- Whether a bonus is cosmetic, usable at launch, delivered as a separate code, or available before release.
- When bonus content is delivered and whether canceling the preorder affects access.
- Whether the edition’s price and terms are acceptable even if you do not use every extra.
Bonus delivery and cancellation terms vary by game and storefront. Nintendo’s stated timing for its eShop preorder bonus codes—after payment is processed and the game is preloaded—is specific to Nintendo’s process, not a general rule for other platforms. Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ.
For a physical preorder, check the seller and delivery promise
Read the listing and seller terms before ordering. A marketplace listing may be sold by a third party rather than the marketplace itself, and protections for delivery, returns, and refunds can differ. Confirm that any stated protection applies to this seller and item. FTC advice on online shopping.

- Confirm the seller’s identity and whether it is the retailer or a marketplace seller.
- Check the total price, including shipping, and the promised ship or delivery date.
- Read the cancellation cutoff, return rules, and refund process.
- Save the order confirmation, delivery promise, seller policy, and relevant messages.
For orders covered by the U.S. Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller must ship within the advertised time or within 30 days if it gave no shipping time. If it cannot ship on time, it must notify you and offer the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a full refund. This is U.S. guidance; whether it applies to a particular transaction depends on the facts and jurisdiction. Decide whether to preorder or wait
A preorder can make sense when you want a particular edition or bonus, understand the payment and cancellation terms, and are comfortable with the seller’s delivery plan. If you are uncertain about performance, features, or whether the game suits you, waiting for reliable reviews or more gameplay information is a reasonable choice. No review schedule or guaranteed benefit from waiting applies to every game.

- Am I buying from the intended store and region, and is this digital or physical?
- When will I be charged, and what happens if payment fails?
- What is the exact cancellation or refund deadline?
- Could preload, a download, streaming, or early access affect my options?
- Are the edition contents and bonus timing worth the price?
- If physical, who is the seller, what is the delivery promise, and how do returns work?
