What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Windows 11 does not have one universal setting that explains every game crash. The cause is usually the game, graphics driver, overlay, Windows installation, unstable hardware, or a recent configuration change. The fastest solution is to classify the symptom, return the PC to a stable baseline, and test causes in order—from low-risk game repairs to hardware diagnostics.
Identify what kind of crash you have
“The game crashed” can describe several different failures. A game that closes to the desktop needs a different investigation from a black screen, sudden reboot, or blue screen.
| Symptom | Investigate first |
|---|---|
| Game closes to the desktop without an error | Game files, mods, overlays, drivers, RAM, or a game bug |
| Crash occurs during launch | Missing runtime, anti-cheat, permissions, corrupted files, or an incompatible API |
| Crash occurs while compiling shaders or loading a new area | Shader cache, graphics driver, DX12/Vulkan, or GPU instability |
| Black screen while audio continues | Display driver, GPU timeout, display mode, cable, or GPU instability |
| Whole PC reboots | Power, temperature, RAM, firmware, drivers, or hardware instability |
| Blue screen appears | Driver, memory, storage, kernel software, or hardware |
| Only borderless or windowed mode crashes | Windowed-game optimization, HDR, VRR, or an overlay conflict |
| Crashes began immediately after an update | Rollback, clean driver installation, or a game/Windows compatibility issue |
| Only one modded title crashes | Mods, injectors, reshade, or incompatible configuration files |
A desktop exit is primarily an application failure. A reboot, black screen, or BSOD is evidence of a broader driver, system, power, thermal, or hardware problem. Do not keep reinstalling one game when several unrelated games fail.
What changed before the crashes started?
Write down the first change that coincided with the problem. Important possibilities include:

- A Windows, GPU, chipset, BIOS, or firmware update.
- Enabling XMP, EXPO, PBO, an overclock, undervolt, or custom fan curve.
- Installing an overlay, recording tool, RGB utility, monitoring program, antivirus, or mod.
- Moving the game to another drive.
- Switching from DX11 to DX12 or Vulkan.
- Connecting a second monitor, HDR display, VR headset, or dock.
- Installing new RAM, a GPU, PSU, SSD, or motherboard.
If the crash started after a GPU-driver update, rolling back to the previous known-good driver may be more sensible than installing the newest one. Driver stability varies by GPU model, game, API, Windows build, and hardware configuration.
Establish a safe baseline
- Restart Windows.
- Back up important files and game saves.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock.
- Temporarily disable XMP or EXPO if crashes began after enabling it.
- Close overlays, recording software, monitoring tools, RGB utilities, and tuning applications.
- Test one affected game with default graphics settings and no mods.
- Record the game, crash timing, error message, Windows build, GPU model, driver version, and whether Windows remains responsive.
Do not begin with registry edits, random driver-updater utilities, permanent security changes, or an increased TDR timeout. Those steps can hide symptoms or add new variables without repairing the cause.
Fix the game-specific causes first
If only one game crashes, start here. These steps address game data and configuration problems, not defective hardware or unstable power.
1. Remove mods and injectors
Disable mods, trainers, reshade, DLL injectors, unofficial patches, and custom launch parameters. The correct baseline is a clean, unmodified installation. If the game becomes stable, add modifications back one at a time.
2. Verify the installation
Use the repair or file-verification option in Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, or the relevant launcher. Verification can replace missing or damaged game files, but it cannot fix a GPU driver, overheating, RAM instability, or an inadequate PSU.
3. Reset the game configuration
Reset graphics settings or rename the game’s configuration folder so it creates a fresh one. Back up save files first, and check the publisher’s instructions because configuration and save locations differ.
4. Rebuild the shader cache when appropriate
If the crash happens during shader compilation or when entering a particular area, clear or rebuild the shader cache only through a supported Windows, driver, launcher, or game option. The next launch may stutter while shaders compile again. Clearing the cache is a targeted experiment, not a universal cure.
5. Test another graphics API
If the title officially supports multiple APIs, test DX11 instead of DX12, or another supported option such as Vulkan. This may reduce features or performance, so treat it as a diagnostic or temporary workaround. It does not prove that Windows 11 is defective.

Finally, check the publisher’s current support page, issue tracker, and patch notes. A reproducible crash caused by a game bug cannot be repaired locally until the publisher patches it.
Update or roll back Windows and graphics drivers
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, then inspect Advanced options > Optional updates. Windows installs recommended drivers through Windows Update, while optional driver updates require manual selection. Install relevant chipset, display, audio, or system-device updates when appropriate, then restart. See Microsoft’s Windows driver guidance.
For graphics drivers, use the official vendor or computer manufacturer:
Laptop owners should check the laptop manufacturer’s support page first. OEM drivers may include power-management, display-switching, and firmware integration that generic packages do not.
Cleanly reinstall the GPU driver
- First, use the GPU installer’s official clean-install or factory-reset option, if provided.
- Install only necessary driver components at first.
- Restart and test the game before reinstalling overlays, recording tools, or tuning utilities.
- If a normal reinstall fails, use Safe Mode and a reputable display-driver removal utility only as an escalation step. Follow that utility’s official documentation.
A clean installation can remove conflicting profiles or driver components. It cannot repair overheating, unstable RAM, insufficient power, or a failing GPU. If the new driver is worse, roll back or reinstall the previous known-good version. If Windows repeatedly replaces a manually installed driver, follow the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver-management instructions rather than reinstalling indefinitely.
For a temporary display recovery after a driver hang, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may flash or beep. This can restore the display but does not resolve the underlying problem.
Check Windows 11 graphics settings
Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select the affected game, choose Options, and test the available settings:
- Set High performance when the PC has integrated and discrete GPUs.
- Toggle Optimizations for windowed games for the specific title.
- Test with Auto HDR disabled for that title if HDR is involved.
- Temporarily disable HDR and variable refresh rate when the crash is limited to borderless or windowed mode.
Microsoft documents these per-game controls in its guide to windowed-game optimizations. Auto HDR can automatically enable the windowed-game optimization path, so a fullscreen-versus-borderless comparison can be informative.

On laptops, the internal panel and an external monitor may be wired to different GPUs. Changing the monitor connection or Windows GPU preference can therefore change the symptom. Older games may also need exclusive fullscreen, compatibility settings, legacy runtimes, or the publisher’s recommended resolution.
Disable overlays and isolate background conflicts
Temporarily disable one group of background features, then retest:
- Xbox Game Bar and Windows capture features.
- Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, Discord, NVIDIA, and AMD overlays.
- Instant replay and GPU recording.
- Monitoring or frame-limiting tools such as RivaTuner-style utilities.
- RGB and motherboard-control software.
- Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software, using only a controlled temporary test.
- Browser hardware acceleration, especially if the crash occurs while switching between a browser and the game.
- Anti-cheat components, using the game publisher’s repair or reinstall procedure.
Do not permanently disable security software. If simply closing programs does not identify the conflict, use a clean boot.
Clean-boot procedure
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Search for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items.
- Restart and test the game.
- Re-enable services and startup items systematically until the conflict returns.
Microsoft explains this isolation process in its clean-boot guide. A clean boot can temporarily remove functionality. After testing, return System Configuration to normal startup and re-enable the items you need.
Repair Windows system files
If several games started failing after an update, or Windows itself is unstable, open Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window before SFC reaches 100 percent. Microsoft says DISM can repair the Windows image and SFC checks protected system files. Consult Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
- No integrity violations: Windows file corruption is less likely, but drivers and hardware can still be responsible.
- Corruption repaired: Restart and retest.
- SFC cannot repair files: Run DISM again if appropriate, test in Safe Mode, or move to Windows recovery options.
- DISM fails: Check Windows Update or use a valid repair source before considering an in-place repair.
These commands repair Windows components; they do not fix arbitrary game files, defective GPUs, unstable RAM, or power delivery.
Understand GPU timeouts, black screens, and error messages
Windows uses Timeout Detection and Recovery, or TDR. If the GPU takes too long to complete work, Windows can reset the graphics driver. The visible result may be a frozen display, black screen, driver timeout, game crash, or an error such as DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED. Microsoft describes this behavior in its TDR documentation.

TDR does not automatically mean the GPU is dying. The trigger might be the game, driver, graphics API, overclock, temperature, power delivery, or hardware.
Collect evidence from:
- Reliability Monitor’s application-failure history.
- Event Viewer entries immediately before and after the crash.
LiveKernelEventreports.- Game crash dumps and launcher logs.
- BSOD stop codes and named driver modules.
Names such as nvlddmkm, amdkmdag, amdwddmg, igdkmdn, or dxgkrnl are clues, not conclusive proof. The named component may be where Windows detected the failure rather than the original cause.
Test RAM, temperatures, storage, and power
Move to hardware diagnosis when multiple unrelated games crash, failures appear only under sustained load, the PC reboots or loses display output, or software troubleshooting has not helped.
RAM and tuning
- Disable XMP or EXPO and test at default memory settings.
- Test one memory module at a time if practical.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic or a reputable bootable memory test.
- Do not treat one clean pass as proof of long-term stability if failures are intermittent.
Temperatures and clocks
Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, hotspot temperature where available, clock behavior, and power limits. Test at stock settings. Inspect dust, blocked laptop vents, failed fans or pumps, and cooling installation. There is no universal safe temperature threshold: limits vary by component and firmware.

Ensure the game drive has free space and check its health with the manufacturer’s utility. Repeated file corruption or drive-health warnings deserve priority. Microsoft documents this example:
chkdsk /f C:
It may require a restart. Back up important data first, and do not treat CHKDSK as a substitute for diagnosing a failing drive. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting documentation covers this command and related repair steps.
Power
Verify that the PSU meets the GPU’s requirements and that GPU power connectors are fully seated. For a new GPU, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cable routing and adapters. A sudden reboot under load points more strongly to power, thermal, firmware, or hardware instability than to a corrupt game installation.

If crashes began directly after a Windows update, check whether Windows provides an uninstall option for that update and review the relevant release information. Windows Insider or preview builds also increase the possibility of regressions; identify whether the PC is enrolled before assuming ordinary stable-channel behavior.

Use System Restore when a restore point predates the problem. An in-place repair may be justified when Windows components remain damaged after supported repairs. Reset this PC — Keep my files is not a first-line game-crash fix: it removes applications and settings and may leave a hardware fault untouched. Back up first and review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
When the problem is the game, not Windows
Evidence points toward a game-specific issue when one title fails, other games remain stable, the crash is reproducible at one scene or menu, and a clean installation or alternate API changes the result. Check the publisher’s current issue tracker, support page, patch notes, anti-cheat repair instructions, and system requirements.
Cloud or remote gaming is a separate case: local GPU and RAM fixes do not apply to a streamed game. Investigate the service status, network stability, and client software instead.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Seek manufacturer or professional help when memory tests fail, the system shows artifacting, the display repeatedly disappears, the drive reports health warnings, the PC reboots under load, there is a burning smell, or the fault follows a GPU or RAM module into another system. Warranty support is preferable for covered hardware. Avoid unverified remote-access providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does TDR mean my graphics card is failing?
No. TDR means Windows detected a GPU execution timeout and attempted driver recovery. The cause can be the game, driver, API, overclock, temperature, power delivery, or defective hardware.
Should I reinstall Windows if games keep crashing?
Usually not. First test stock settings, game files, drivers, overlays, Windows files, RAM, temperatures, storage, and power. Resetting Windows removes applications and settings and may not fix hardware instability.
Is the newest graphics driver always the best choice?
No. If crashes began after an update, the previous known-good driver may be more appropriate. Test versions against the exact GPU, game, Windows build, and configuration.
The Bottom Line
Start with classification, not random tweaks: determine whether one game or the whole system is affected, undo recent changes, test without mods and overlays, then investigate drivers, Windows, and hardware in that order. Reboots, black screens, BSODs, failed memory tests, and artifacting deserve system-level diagnosis rather than repeated game reinstalls.
