Facepunch said on 24 April 2024 that certain Nintendo-related items were being removed from the Garry’s Mod Steam Workshop at Nintendo’s request. The studio described the review as ongoing, spanning 20 years of uploads. Garry Newman later said he had been assured Nintendo verified the takedowns as legitimate. The available public information does not establish a final removal count or confirm that the review is complete.
Why are Nintendo-related Garry’s Mod add-ons being taken down?
Facepunch’s 24 April 2024 Steam announcement said the removals were not a mistake and “the takedowns came from Nintendo.” It called the effort “an ongoing process” because the team had “20 years of uploads to go through,” and asked creators to delete Nintendo-related uploads and not upload them again.
Newman framed the decision as Nintendo’s choice about how its intellectual property is used: “This is Nintendo’s content and what they allow and don’t allow is up to them.” Facepunch said it would remove as much as it could.
Were the takedowns verified by Nintendo?
Newman later said he had been assured the takedowns were verified by Nintendo as legitimate and would continue. Nintendo Life reported that statement on 26 April 2024: “I have been assured that the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit, so this will now continue as planned.”

That is the public explanation from Newman, not an independently published verification record. The underlying notices and verification documents are not available in the cited coverage. GamingOnLinux later reported that some community members had questioned the notices, including because they came through a domain associated with MarkMonitor and used the name “Aaron Peters.” Those details, and Newman’s explanation of them, are reported by GamingOnLinux on 30 May 2024; the notices themselves are not included there.

How many add-ons were affected?
No final count or complete list of confirmed removals is established by the cited sources. Ars Technica reported that the Garry’s Mod Workshop had more than 1.8 million add-ons and that a search for “Pokemon” returned nearly 3,000 results on the morning of 25 April 2024. Those dated figures show the scale of the catalog; they are not counts of infringing uploads or items Nintendo asked to remove.

Facepunch described the review as ongoing in April 2024. The cited sources do not provide a later official statement that the work was complete, so they do not support saying that every Nintendo-related add-on has been removed. Ars Technica’s contemporaneous account is available here.

Facepunch’s announcement asked creators to remove their Nintendo-related Workshop uploads and not repost them. Newman described Nintendo’s approach to user-made content as a rights-holder decision: “When a company lets you get away with using their IP in UGC in another game they’re a cool company. When they don’t, they’re a normal company.” That is his characterization of the broader issue, not a published statement of Nintendo’s policy toward every fan project.
