If your Roblox character changed unexpectedly, first check your in-app messages and Avatar Editor. A default-looking avatar with a reset notice can indicate an automated safety reset; a grey-block character may reflect regional item restrictions; and unfamiliar avatar changes alongside other account activity can point to unauthorized access. If the change happens only in one experience, the explanation may be specific to that experience.
How to identify why your Roblox character changed

Why was my avatar reset?
Roblox says it checks profile avatars for content that may violate its Community Standards. If its system detects a configuration that violates those standards, it may automatically reset the avatar to a default look and send an in-app message explaining the reset. Read that message first and follow the directions it provides.
If the notice includes “Report mistake” and you think the reset was made in error, use that option. Roblox says, “Roblox Customer Support does not manually review decisions made regarding avatar safety resets.” Repeating a configuration that breaks the rules may result in another reset and could lead to further account action. Roblox also says that, in most avatar-reset cases, users still own the individual items but may not wear them together in that configuration.
Why is my Roblox avatar a grey block?
Roblox says grey-block characters are most likely related to regional content availability. Local requirements in some regions can make certain clothing, accessories, or other avatar items unavailable, and Roblox may replace the whole avatar with a grey-block appearance. This explanation concerns the grey-block symptom; it does not establish the cause of every unexpected avatar change.

If this is your avatar, try equipping or unequipping an item through Avatar Editor. Roblox says this should remove restricted items from the avatar.
Did someone change my Roblox avatar?
An unexpected avatar change by itself does not prove that someone accessed your account. Treat it as a security concern if it comes with signs such as unfamiliar account activity or missing inventory. Roblox’s recovery guidance recommends these steps:

- Remove suspicious downloads and browser extensions obtained outside Roblox.
- Run a full virus scan on your device.
- Change your Roblox account password.
- Enable 2-Step Verification.
- If items are missing, contact Roblox promptly. Its hacked-account guidance says to seek help about lost inventory within 30 days of the compromise.
If you cannot regain access through a password reset, Roblox says the first email address added to the account or the billing email used for the first payment may help verify ownership. That information does not guarantee account recovery. Roblox also does not guarantee that a compromised account will be restored to its previous state or that lost virtual items or currency can be recovered.
How do I get my old Roblox avatar back?
First open Avatar Editor and check your clothing, body, animation, and outfits. Re-equip items you still own, and check your saved outfits before considering replacement purchases. Roblox says that in most avatar-reset cases, users still own the individual items, even if the original combination cannot be worn.

Avatar Editor is where Roblox users customize clothing, body, animation, and outfits. On Xbox, Roblox’s instructions say to open the Avatar tab and press Y to access the editor. The controls can differ by platform.

Use the appeal route specified in the moderation notification. Roblox’s general appeal guidance says some cases go through Violations & Appeals, while others use its Support Form. It gives a general deadline of 30 days to submit an appeal; EU users have six months to appeal an initial moderation action. An appeal does not guarantee that Roblox will remove the consequence.

Keep this process separate from an avatar safety reset: for those resets, use “Report mistake” in the notification if that option is available.
