Druids don’t get Fireball under the 2014 fifth-edition rules, and that holds for the general Druid spell list and for the Circle of the Land’s Desert table and the Circle of Wildfire’s expanded spell list. The 2024 revision changes the answer for one route: a Circle of the Land Druid who chooses Arid Land has Fireball prepared starting at Druid level 5. So the honest answer depends on which edition your table uses and which subclass your Druid takes.
The short answer by rules version
Whether a Druid can use Fireball depends on three things: the rules edition, the subclass, and, for the 2024 Circle of the Land, the land you choose. The table below sets out each route.
| Rules version and route | Fireball access | What the official rule says |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 general Druid spell list | No | Fireball is absent from the published general Druid spell list. |
| 2014 Circle of the Land, Desert | No | The Desert circle spell table does not list Fireball. |
| 2014 Circle of Wildfire | No, from its expanded spell list | The listed 5th-level spells are Plant Growth and Revivify. Fireball is not listed. |
| 2024 general Druid spell list | Do not assume access from class membership alone | Check the specific spell and the class or subclass rules. Spell school is a separate category from class access. |
| 2024 Circle of the Land, Arid Land | Yes, starting at Druid level 5 | Fireball appears in the Arid Circle Spells table at level 5, and the listed spells for that level and lower are prepared. |
The phrase “Druids don’t get Fireball” is therefore too broad to be accurate across editions. The more precise statement is that the 2014 Druid list does not include Fireball, while the 2024 Circle of the Land’s Arid option does.
The 2014 baseline: why the general Druid list has no Fireball
Fireball is absent from the 2014 general Druid spell list. A Druid who wants fire-based damage under those rules has to look to a subclass that grants it, or to a different class entirely. Nothing about the Druid’s core spell list in 2014 reaches the 3rd-level Evocation spell.

Circle of the Land under 2014 rules
The 2014 Circle of the Land feature grants circle spells tied to one of eight lands. Each land has its own table. The Desert table does not list Fireball, so a 2014 Desert Druid cannot prepare it through the subclass.
Circle of Wildfire under 2014 rules
Wildfire is the subclass most often mentioned alongside this question, because its theme is fire. Its expanded spell table includes fire-associated options such as Burning Hands, Flaming Sphere, Scorching Ray, Fire Shield, and Flame Strike. Its 5th-level row, however, lists Plant Growth and Revivify, not Fireball. A Wildfire Druid therefore does not receive Fireball from the 2014 subclass table, even though the theme points that way.

Spell school is not the same as spell-list access
Fireball is an Evocation spell, but the school does not decide who can cast it. The 2024 spell rules treat schools as a way of categorizing spells, and they state that schools have no rules of their own. Whether a class can use a spell is indicated separately, through class and subclass lists. That is why a fire-themed subclass, or a spell’s school, is not a reliable guide to whether a Druid has access. Check the list, not the school.
The 2024 exception: Circle of the Land and Arid Land
The revised Circle of the Land feature changes the mechanism. Instead of a fixed land-based table, the player chooses a land type after each Long Rest. The official Basic Rules text reads:

Arid Land’s table grants Fireball at Druid level 5, with the listed spells for that level and lower prepared. The Arid option is the only 2024 Circle of the Land route in this article that grants Fireball.

- PART OF THE 2024 CORE COLLECTION—1 of 3 revised Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks, the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide is designed for use with the fifth edition 2024 Player’s Handbook and 2024 Monster Manual
To use it:
- Confirm your Druid is a Circle of the Land Druid under the 2024 rules, not the 2014 version.
- Reach Druid level 5, the level at which Arid Land’s table grants Fireball.
- Finish a Long Rest and choose Arid as your land type.
- Check that Fireball is in your prepared spells for that rest period, based on the Arid Circle Spells table.
Choosing a different land after a later Long Rest changes which circle spells you have available. A Druid who chooses polar, temperate, or tropical does not get Fireball from the circle table, so the choice is a real trade-off.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the lists are selective
The official sources establish which spells each list grants. They do not explain why Fireball was left off particular 2014 lists, and no designer comment on that omission was found. A reasonable reading is that spell lists are class and subclass design choices, but a specific balance or thematic reason presented as official intent would go beyond the evidence. Treat any such explanation as interpretation, not a stated rule.

Checking the rules at your table
- Identify the edition on your character sheet or the book you are using. The answer changes between 2014 and 2024.
- For a Circle of the Land Druid, find the land table for your edition and the land you chose.
- For a Circle of Wildfire Druid, read the subclass spell table in your edition’s rules and do not rely on the subclass’s fire theme.
- If you are using a 2024 subclass other than Circle of the Land, check that subclass’s own spell table, which this article does not cover.
