Its recognition reflected the game’s socially resonant portrayal of psychosis, shaped by research and collaboration with people with lived experience—but its creators did not claim to reproduce psychosis faithfully.
What did the Games for Impact award recognize?
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice received The Game Awards’ Games for Impact award in 2017. The Research Excellence Framework impact submission describes the award as recognition for the game’s profound social messages. The honor was not simply for depicting mental illness: it recognized how the game brought a difficult subject into a major narrative game and prompted public discussion.
Xbox describes Hellblade as a dark fantasy about Celtic warrior Senua’s journey to Hel, and as an exploration of her psychosis. The story’s mythic setting and Senua’s experiences are intertwined, rather than presented as a clinical case study.
How did the developers research psychosis?
Ninja Theory involved both scientific expertise and people with lived experience, including people who hear voices, see visions, and hold unusual beliefs. In an Xbox article published May 3, 2021, studio head Dominic Matthews explained: “It was critical that our exploration of this subject was grounded in research, and as such our development team collaborated closely with those in both the science and lived-experience communities.”
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of Heavenly Sword, enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and dmc: Devil may Cry, comes a warrior's brutal journey into myth and madness
- Set in the viking age, a broken celtic Warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into viking hell to fight for the soul of her Dead lover
- Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, hellblade: senua's sacrifice will pull you deep into senua's mind
- A beautifully realized “award winning” experience
That collaboration informed the game’s attempt to bring players closer to Senua’s subjective experience. It does not mean the game represents every person’s experience of psychosis, or that its fantasy narrative should be treated as a guide to diagnosis or treatment.
Did Ninja Theory claim the portrayal was faithful?
No. The creators explicitly recognized the limits of representing psychosis through a game. In a PlayStation Blog development diary published August 24, 2015, creative director Tameem Antoniades wrote: “In all likelihood it can never be faithfully represented, but we feel that games can get us closer than other media.”

- The sequel to the award-winning Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
- A crafted experience of cinematic immersion.
- A brutal journey of survival through a land plagued by the horrors of myth and tyranny.
- Experience the world through Senua’s unique perspective.
- Beautifully realized locations, characters, and sound.
That distinction matters: Hellblade is an authored fictional portrayal informed by research, not a faithful simulation or a universal account. Its significance lies partly in the effort to represent an interior experience while acknowledging that representation has limits.
What impact was reported beyond the game?
A University of Cambridge UK Impact Map page added November 21, 2022, reported that the game had sold more than 1.5 million copies in 18 languages and raised more than £60,000 for mental health. These are figures reported on that dated page, not current totals. Cambridge also describes a scholarship established with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.

- Silent narrative. Mind-solving puzzles.
- No text – No HUD. Only immersion.
- Nature as a game mechanic.
- Includes game manual.
- Languages: English, French, German, and Spanish.
The same Cambridge page says about one in every 100 people will experience a psychotic episode in their lifetime. The page does not identify the year of the underlying estimate, so it should be understood as the figure Cambridge reported there rather than a newly verified prevalence statistic.

Xbox’s 2019 account says Hellblade launched in 2017 for PlayStation and PC, and later came to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and VR. That is a historical platform account, not a confirmation of current storefront availability or editions.
