Try Steam file verification first, then run a conservative graphics test with PhysX and DirectX 11 features disabled. Batman: Arkham City is an older DirectX 9-era Windows port, so modern Windows PCs can encounter missing legacy runtime components, renderer incompatibilities, altered configuration files, or overlay and mod conflicts even when the hardware is powerful enough.
Start with Steam’s file verification and a conservative graphics configuration. For Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition on Windows, crashes are often more usefully diagnosed as a compatibility or configuration problem than as proof that your PC is too weak. The game is an older DirectX 9-era Windows port, and modern Windows installations may not include every optional legacy component it expects.

Work through these eight fixes in order. You do not necessarily need all eight: stop when the crash disappears, then re-enable features or restore changes one at a time to identify the trigger.

1. Verify the Steam installation
This is the safest first repair because Steam can replace missing or damaged game files without changing your Windows installation or graphics drivers.

- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game before changing anything else. Steam may report that some files failed verification because they are local configuration files. That result does not automatically mean the installation is still damaged; test the game after the verification completes.
2. Reset the graphics configuration to a safe baseline
Open the game’s pre-launch options launcher and temporarily choose conservative settings. Turn off DirectX 11 features, tessellation, and hardware PhysX if those options are available. Lower other advanced effects as well.
Launch the game and play or replay the section that normally crashes. If it becomes stable, restore settings one at a time:

- Play long enough to reproduce the original problem.
- Only enable the next feature if the crash does not return.
This turns a vague crash into a useful boundary. For example, a crash that returns only after enabling PhysX points toward a different compatibility issue than one that returns only with DirectX 11 lighting or tessellation.
DirectX 11 and PhysX are not automatically defective, and this is not a claim that either feature causes every crash. They are reversible diagnostic switches for an older game running on modern hardware.
3. Disable PhysX when the crash happens in physics-heavy scenes
Set PhysX to Off, or to the least demanding mode offered by the launcher, and test again. Prioritize this fix if the crash occurs during an introductory cutscene, when entering a physics-heavy area, or immediately after enabling PhysX.

Arkham City can select different PhysX behavior depending on the installed GPUs and available video memory. That legacy path may behave differently across modern NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel systems. A stable test with PhysX disabled does not prove that PhysX is the only cause, but it gives you a strong symptom boundary.
Once the unmodified game is stable, you can try PhysX again at a lower setting. Do not download replacement PhysX DLL files from random DLL websites. If the game needs a runtime component, use the game’s own installer or an official vendor source.
4. Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components
A PC can report that it has DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 while still missing optional legacy files used by older DirectX 9 games. Those versions are not simply a complete superset of every older optional component.
If Arkham City fails to launch, reports a missing file such as d3dx9_43.dll, or crashes during initialization, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. Microsoft says this package adds legacy components without replacing the newer DirectX version installed in Windows.
Use the official Microsoft download, not an individual DLL downloaded from a third-party site. Manually replacing one DLL can introduce a mismatched or unsafe file and may leave other required components missing.
5. Repair the appropriate Visual C++ runtime
Older games may depend on 32-bit Visual C++ runtime libraries even when they are running on 64-bit Windows. A launch error involving a runtime library is a more convincing reason to investigate this branch than a crash that occurs only after an hour of play in one particular area.

- Check the game’s installation folders for bundled prerequisite installers.
- Use the x86 redistributable when the game or error indicates a 32-bit dependency.
- If the relevant Microsoft Visual C++ package is already installed, choose Repair before adding another copy.
- Download packages from Microsoft or use the game’s own installer, not an unofficial driver or DLL site.
Microsoft maintains a list of supported and legacy Visual C++ redistributables on its official Visual C++ downloads page. Avoid the claim that one particular package fixes every Arkham City crash: the correct package depends on the game’s dependency and the error displayed by your installation.
6. Remove mods, shader replacements, and overlays
Return the game to a clean, unmodified state. Temporarily remove or disable:
- texture packs and shader replacements;
- ReShade-style injectors;
- unofficial launchers;
- DLL injectors and other files added to the game directory;
- Steam, Discord, GPU utility, recording, and performance-monitoring overlays.
Do not delete files blindly. Back up mod files first, and use Steam’s verification step afterward if you are unsure which files were original. Test the game without any modifications or overlays. If it works, add changes back individually and keep a record of which addition was present when the crash returned.

7. Test a new save or another checkpoint
If the crash always occurs while loading one checkpoint or save, back up your saves before experimenting. Then test a new game or another available save.
The game autosaves at checkpoints, so a new test can show whether the problem is tied to one scene or save rather than to the whole installation. Interpret the results like this:

- Both a new game and the old save crash: continue with the installation, runtime, graphics, and overlay checks.
- A new game works but one save crashes at the same point: the failure may be localized to that save or checkpoint.
- The crash moves between unrelated saves or locations: a save-specific explanation is less likely.
There is no universal, officially established save-repair procedure to promise here. Preserve the original save, and use the new-game result as evidence when seeking support.
8. Escalate with reproducible details
If verification, a conservative graphics baseline, legacy runtime installation, and a clean unmodified test do not help, gather the information that separates one crash branch from another:
- Windows edition, version, and build;
- CPU and GPU models;
- graphics-driver version;
- the exact crash location or trigger: launch, cutscene, area transition, checkpoint, or a fixed amount of play;
- the exact error text, if any;
- whether PhysX, DirectX 11 features, and tessellation are enabled;
- whether overlays and mods are disabled; and
- whether a new save reproduces the problem.
Use the WB Games Support portal to look for the Batman/Arkham knowledge base and submit a support request if appropriate. Include the tests you already performed and the result of each one.
There is no current authoritative driver-and-settings matrix that guarantees a particular fix across every modern NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPU. A reproducible description is more valuable than guessing at a driver version or replacing hardware prematurely.

Why these fixes fit this particular PC port
Steam lists the game’s original PC baseline around Windows XP/Vista/7, 2 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9.0c environment, and an older GPU class. That does not mean the game cannot run on a modern PC. It does mean that a current Windows installation, modern graphics stack, altered configuration, and optional legacy components can interact with an older renderer in ways that a newer game may not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Arkham City need DirectX 9 files when my PC has DirectX 12?
No. DirectX 12 or DirectX 11 being installed does not guarantee that every optional legacy DirectX 9 component is present. If Arkham City reports a missing D3DX9 DLL, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime rather than downloading the DLL separately.
Is PhysX responsible for every Arkham City crash?
