The prize paired an inedible chocolate-bar-themed Xbox Series X with a playable burgundy controller and a separate controller-shaped confection made from 100% pure chocolate. The sweepstakes ended on December 14, 2023.
The Wonka-themed Xbox giveaway was real, but it was not a retail console—and the edible controller was not usable hardware. Announced on November 13, 2023, Xbox’s promotion with Warner Bros. Pictures offered five winners a custom Xbox Series X styled like a Wonka chocolate bar, a functional burgundy Xbox Wireless Controller, and a separate controller-shaped confection made from 100% pure chocolate.

The promotion ended on December 14, 2023. The console was explicitly inedible; only the separate chocolate replica was meant to be eaten.
What Xbox actually gave away
The prize centered on a custom Xbox Series X designed to resemble a large Wonka chocolate bar. It came with a display styled after a Willy Wonka chocolate shop, making the complete package look more like a film prop or collector’s display than a conventional console bundle.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.

Xbox specifically warned that the custom console only looked like chocolate. It was an actual game console and was not edible.
The broader package was called the “(X)box of Chocolates.” According to the official promotional rules, each of the five grand-prize winners received:
- An Xbox Series X Wonka Chocolate console, described in the rules as an actual, inedible game console;
- A custom Wonka-inspired Xbox Wireless Controller in burgundy, based on the coat worn by Wonka in the film;
- An edible chocolate Xbox controller made from 100% pure chocolate;
- An Edible Chocolates Bundle containing five themed truffles;
- A three-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, subject to the restrictions in the official rules.
The official rules listed an approximate retail value of $689.97 per prize. They also cautioned that the chocolates could contain nuts or other allergens and might not suit every dietary restriction.

| Item | What it was | Could you play games with it? |
|---|---|---|
| Custom burgundy Xbox Wireless Controller | A functional controller inspired by Wonka’s outfit in the film | Yes |
| Edible chocolate Xbox controller | A controller-shaped confection wrapped in gold | No |
The edible version was a piece of chocolate shaped like an Xbox controller, not an electronic input device with working buttons, wireless connectivity, or a USB connection. Its purpose was novelty and presentation—not gameplay.
What was in the “(X)box of Chocolates”?
Alongside the chocolate controller, the edible bundle included five themed truffles. Xbox gave them names tied to gaming or the Wonka concept:
- Achievement Hunting
- Button Masher
- Your Citrus Sidekick
- Xtra Kick
- Wonka for the Win
The edible controller was described as being wrapped in a gold wrapper. The custom burgundy controller, by contrast, was the functional gaming accessory in the package.

How the 2023 giveaway worked
Xbox announced that entries were open from November 13 through December 14, 2023. The announced social-media entry method was to follow Xbox on X, formerly known as Twitter, and retweet the official sweepstakes post.

- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Independent coverage described additional eligibility requirements, including being at least 18 years old and living in an Xbox-supported country or region. Those details can vary by jurisdiction, so the official promotional rules—not a later summary—are the appropriate source for precise historical eligibility questions.
Because the closing date has passed, retweeting an old post or finding a repost of the announcement cannot create a valid new entry. This was a time-limited promotional sweepstakes, not a permanent Xbox rewards program.
Can you buy the Wonka Xbox console?
No—not through ordinary retail. Xbox said the custom console and associated prize package were limited to the sweepstakes and were not available for retail purchase. There is no standard, mass-market “Wonka Xbox Series X” model that shoppers could order as an ordinary Xbox product.
You can’t buy the original Wonka giveaway console through normal retail, but readers looking for the underlying hardware can compare the Xbox Series X console. That is the standard retail console, not the custom chocolate-bar-themed collectible, so availability, configuration, and price should be checked at the time of purchase.

- PC READY. NO EXTRAS NEEDED — Plug the USB-C cable into your Windows PC and you're playing instantly. No adapters, no Bluetooth pairing, no additional purchases required. Works across the XBOX app, Steam, and more.*
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience sculpted surfaces and refined geometry designed around how you actually hold a controller. Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grip on the triggers, bumpers, and back case.
- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 40 hours of wireless battery life on standard AA batteries. When the batteries run low, plug in the included cable and keep playing without missing a beat.*
The same distinction applies to the controller. For actual play, the relevant retail category is the Xbox Wireless Controller—not the chocolate replica. A standard controller may resemble the functional part of the prize in purpose, but it is not the custom burgundy Wonka version.
Why the promotion caused confusion
The campaign combined three ideas that sound similar in a headline but were materially different:
- A real Xbox Series X with a custom Wonka chocolate-bar-inspired exterior and a themed display;
- A real, playable Xbox Wireless Controller finished in burgundy and inspired by the movie’s version of Wonka;
- An edible controller-shaped chocolate that had no gaming function.
Calling the whole prize an “edible Xbox” would therefore be inaccurate. The console was inedible, and the usable controller was a conventional electronic accessory. Only one separate controller-shaped item was chocolate.

Bottom line
Xbox’s Wonka promotion offered a genuinely unusual prize, but the edible part was narrower than the headline suggested. Five winners received an inedible custom Xbox Series X, a playable burgundy Xbox Wireless Controller, and a separate 100% chocolate controller with themed truffles. The sweepstakes is closed, and the custom hardware was never offered as a normal retail product.

For shoppers who want the hardware rather than the collector’s presentation, a standard Xbox Series X and a standard Xbox Wireless Controller are the honest alternatives. Neither is the Wonka edition.
