Why Can’t I Purchase Anything on Fortnite? Causes and Fixes for 2026

Fortnite purchases can fail for several separate reasons: a temporary Epic purchase block, a declined payment, a parental or under-13 restriction, or a console checkout issue. Here is how to tell which one applies and what to do.

There is no single reason Fortnite purchases fail. Epic’s own guidance separates five or six different situations: a temporary block on the account, a declined payment, a parental or age-based restriction on a young player’s account, a payment-provider or bank restriction, a region mismatch between the account and the payment method, and a problem inside the platform’s own checkout (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, or mobile store). The exact error text and the platform you bought on tell you which of these you are dealing with, so start there.

Match your symptom to the likely cause

Use this table to narrow the problem before running any checks. The cause column reflects the category Epic’s support material uses; it cannot confirm what is happening on your specific account.

What you see Likely category Who handles the fix
Purchase button works, then the item is refused after several tries or after an unusual purchase pattern Temporary purchase block on the Epic account You wait and check; Epic Support if it persists
Payment is rejected with a decline message Declined payment (region, payment details, funds, or method status) You check the method; your bank or payment provider; then Epic Support
Real-money purchases are unavailable on a young player’s account Cabined Account awaiting parental consent, or a parental spending control A parent or guardian
Checkout opens a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Steam payment screen and fails there Platform checkout problem The platform’s own billing support
Payment went through but no V-Bucks appear Transaction or wallet issue Epic Support (Epic Games Store purchases) or the platform’s support (console or other store purchases)

Information to gather before you troubleshoot

Write down the following before changing any settings. Support teams ask for these details, and they also tell you which route to follow.

  • The exact error text, including any code, and whether it appeared at checkout, at the payment confirmation step, or after the payment was taken.
  • The platform you are playing on and the store you bought from. A purchase made through Epic Games Store is handled by Epic’s payment platform, while purchases on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Steam go through those services.
  • The country on the Epic account, your current location, and the country on the payment method.
  • Whether a charge appears in your bank statement, your Epic transaction history, or your platform’s purchase history.
  • Whether the account belongs to a player under 13 or under the region’s age of digital consent.

Purchase blocks on your Epic account

Epic’s player support article on purchase blocks describes them as a security measure triggered by multiple failed purchase attempts or unusual purchasing activity. Epic says a block usually lifts after 24 hours. A block is a different problem from a declined payment, and retrying during a block can extend it.

Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

What to do during a block

  1. Stop attempting the purchase. Each further attempt during the block is more activity for the security check to notice.
  2. Check the email inbox linked to your Epic account, including spam and filtered folders. Epic says it emails the account holder when a block is applied.
  3. Confirm that the billing name, address, and payment details on your Epic account match the payment method you are using.
  4. Confirm that the payment method is active and has enough funds for the purchase.
  5. Confirm that the account country matches your current location and the country of the payment method.
  6. Ask your bank or card issuer whether it has placed a restriction on online or gaming merchants. Banks sometimes hold transactions that Epic’s system never sees.
  7. If the block is still in place after 24 hours, contact Epic Support.

Epic also says blocks can follow chargebacks or fraud-related activity on the account. Temporary blocks expire automatically, and Epic Support cannot remove them early. If your block followed a chargeback, a support request will not shorten it; the 24-hour period is the route to resolution.

Declined payments

A decline is a rejection of the payment itself, not a block on the account. Epic’s declined-purchase checklist covers four things: that the account region matches your current location, that the payment details are correct, that the method is active and has enough funds, and that the saved method is still valid.

  1. Confirm the account region matches where you are currently playing.
  2. Re-enter the billing details exactly as your card issuer has them on file.
  3. If the payment method is saved, remove it from the account and add it again, then retry once.
  4. If the decline continues, contact your bank or payment provider. Ask whether it blocked the transaction, and whether the merchant, the currency, or the country is restricted.
  5. If the payment method is in good standing and the decline still persists, submit a support ticket to Epic.

Accounts for players under 13 and parental controls

Epic labels an account as a Cabined Account when the player indicates they are under 13 or under the region’s age of digital consent, whichever threshold is higher. Cabined players can still play Fortnite and use content they already bought or earned. Real-money purchases, however, are disabled until a parent or guardian completes account setup and gives consent through Epic’s consent process.

Two parental settings can also block purchases, and they work differently:

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  • Epic payment PIN: When enabled, a parental PIN is required for real-money purchases made through Epic’s payment system.
  • Daily spending limit: Epic states a daily limit of $100 applies to an Epic account whose player indicated they are under 13. A purchase above that limit needs the guardian PIN to override it. This figure is Epic’s stated rule for Epic payments, and it does not apply to payments made through a console or other store.

If the account is Cabined, the purchase will not succeed until consent is complete, regardless of the payment method. A parent or guardian should check the consent status in the account settings and review the PIN and spending limit under the Epic parental controls.

Console and other store checkouts

When you buy on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Steam, the transaction is processed by that platform, and the platform’s billing and parental settings apply. Epic’s parental-control documentation says the Epic payment PIN and daily spending limit do not control payments on those platforms. That means an Epic parental change will not fix a console payment failure, and a console payment failure will not be resolved by Epic’s support team.

  • On a console, check the platform’s own spending or purchase restrictions for the user profile you are signed in with.
  • Check the payment method stored in that platform’s account, not the one on your Epic account.
  • Contact the platform’s billing support for a declined or unexplained console charge.

Checking Epic’s service status

Epic publishes an online status page covering Fortnite, the Item Shop, Epic Games Store purchasing and refunds, Epic Wallet, and the payment process. When this article was checked on October 8, 2026, every one of those services was listed as operational, with no incident reported for that day. A status page is a snapshot at the time it is viewed. It does not show whether your particular checkout session will work, so if the problem continues, check the live page again before concluding that the outage has ended.

  1. Fully close and restart Fortnite on the platform where you bought the V-Bucks.
  2. Sign in on that same platform and confirm you are using the correct Epic account.
  3. Check whether the Shared Wallet feature applies to your account and platform.
  4. Open your transaction history and look for the purchase.

If no matching transaction appears in the history, Epic says the purchase did not go through. In that case, check with your bank or payment provider before attempting the purchase again, so you do not pay twice. For purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo, contact that platform’s support. For Epic Games Store purchases, contact Epic Support and provide the order number, the V-Bucks amount, and the platform you play on.

Gift cards: when they can help

Gift cards are the only physical purchase option Epic documents for Fortnite, and they are a payment method, not a way around a restriction. Epic distinguishes two kinds of card:

Card type What it can buy Limits Epic states
V-Bucks card Adds V-Bucks to the account Epic says it is being replaced by the Fortnite gift card as rollout reaches more regions; availability and denominations may change
Fortnite gift card Can fund V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew, Fortnite packs, and some Epic Games Store products, according to the terms on the card Epic says territory restrictions can apply; the Epic or platform account may need to match the card’s region

Two further limits apply. V-Bucks redeemed on a Nintendo device can only be used on Nintendo. For Cabined Accounts, Epic says a Fortnite gift card balance can be used for Epic games such as Fortnite, but not for Fortnite Crew. A gift card will not lift a purchase block, a Cabined Account restriction, or a parental spending limit. Buy cards only from authorised retailers; a card from an unverified seller may be invalid or fraudulent.

When to contact support

Contact Epic Support if the block has not lifted after 24 hours, if a declined payment persists after your bank or provider has confirmed the method is in good standing, or if a payment went through without V-Bucks being added. When you write to Epic, give the exact error text, your platform, the country on the account, and the order number if you have one. Contact the platform’s billing support instead when the transaction was made through a console or other store.

The reason for the failure is usually visible once you match the error and checkout route to the table above. The exact cause for your account can only be confirmed by Epic Support or your payment provider, because neither account-level flags nor card-level restrictions are visible from outside those systems.
