Discord usually stops working for one of four reasons: Discord itself is having an outage, your network is blocking or losing the connection, the app is damaged or outdated, or your device, browser, account, or permissions are causing the failure.
Start by checking Discord’s official status page. Then compare Discord on another client—such as the browser version instead of the desktop app—and, if possible, on another network. Those two comparisons often reveal whether the problem is global or local before you change anything important.

Fastest checks first
- Check Discord Status. Look for an incident affecting the API, Gateway, messaging, media proxy, voice, desktop, or client services.
- Fully quit Discord. Closing the window may leave the app running in the background, so exit it completely and reopen it.
- Try Discord in a private browser window. This helps separate a desktop-app problem from a wider connection or account problem.
- Test another network. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or another Wi-Fi connection.
- Update Discord and your operating system. Also update your browser if you use Discord on the web.
- Identify the affected feature. Launching, login, messaging, media, voice, camera, and notifications have different likely causes.
As a practical rule, if Discord works on one device or network but not another, the problem is probably local. If it fails across several clients and networks, a Discord-side incident, account problem, or broader service issue becomes more likely. This is a useful diagnostic rule, not a guarantee.

Is Discord down for everyone?
Check Discord’s official status page before reinstalling the app or changing DNS settings. The page can show whether the problem affects the whole service or only a component such as the API, Gateway, voice, search, media proxy, desktop client, or other client services. You can also review Discord’s incident history.

Different status conditions point to different symptoms:
- Broad outage: Login, messaging, servers, and multiple clients may fail at once.
- API or Gateway incident: Servers, channels, messages, or authentication may not load correctly.
- Voice incident: Text may work while joining calls, staying connected, or hearing audio fails.
- Media-related incident: Images, videos, GIFs, or attachments may not load.
- Desktop or client incident: The web and mobile versions may work while the installed app does not.
A green status page does not rule out a regional ISP problem, DNS failure, browser extension conflict, client-specific bug, or an incident that has only just started. Third-party outage reports can help show that other people are seeing a pattern, but Discord’s status page should be the primary source.
If the status page reports an active incident, avoid repeatedly reinstalling Discord. Monitor the incident updates and use another communication method temporarily. Local fixes cannot repair a Discord-side outage.

A Discord launch failure is commonly caused by a hung background process, corrupted temporary files, a failed update, security software, an incompatible client or operating-system combination, or a Discord bug.
- Quit Discord completely.
- On Windows or macOS, confirm that no Discord process remains in the system’s process or activity list, then reopen it.
- Restart the computer.
- Try Discord in a browser. If the browser works, the installed client is the more likely source of the problem.
- Update Discord and the operating system.
- Clear Discord’s cache.
- Check whether antivirus, firewall, VPN, or proxy software is blocking the updater or client.
- Reinstall Discord only if the earlier steps fail.
Clear Discord’s cache
Close Discord before removing cache files. Discord’s troubleshooting guide lists these locations:

~/Library/Application Support/discord/CacheDelete only the cache contents or the cache folder identified by Discord’s guidance. Do not delete unrelated folders in the Windows AppData or macOS Library directories. Clearing cached files is different from deleting the entire Discord application-data directory or clearing mobile storage: the latter can remove local data or require you to sign in again.

Reinstallation replaces damaged client files and can fix failed updates, but it will not fix a Discord outage, blocked network, account restriction, login problem, or microphone permission issue. Use Discord’s official troubleshooting guide and download installers only from Discord’s official channels.

First determine whether everything is affected or only one server or channel. If one server fails while others work, the cause may be that server’s permissions, configuration, outage, or moderation state rather than Discord as a whole.
For an app-wide loading problem:
- Check Discord Status for an API, Gateway, or messaging incident.
- Open Discord in a private browser window.
- Try another browser and disable extensions that modify pages, scripts, privacy controls, or network traffic.
- Test another network, such as mobile data.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy.
- Restart the router if other internet services are also unreliable.
- Check firewall or antivirus rules and use a narrow allow-list exception instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Update Discord and clear its cache.

Use cross-client and network tests to find the cause
These comparisons are often more useful than applying random fixes:

Changing DNS can help when your device cannot resolve Discord domains, but it cannot repair an outage or an account restriction. Likewise, disabling a VPN may reveal a routing conflict, but it is not a universal fix.

Repeated disconnections can result from unstable Wi-Fi, packet loss, congestion, weak upload bandwidth, DNS failures, VPN or proxy interference, firewall rules, ISP filtering, a poor voice-server route, or a Discord Gateway or voice incident.

- Check whether other websites and online games are also disconnecting.
- Restart the router if the wider connection is unreliable.
- Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or another network.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy, then restore it afterward.
- Check firewall and antivirus rules. Do not permanently disable protection.
- For voice problems, try another voice-server region when that option is available.
- Update Discord and clear temporary files.
Discord’s troubleshooting guide cites 300 kbps up and down as a minimum bandwidth figure for voice-connection troubleshooting. That is not a guarantee of good voice or video quality: latency, packet loss, jitter, congestion, and the number of simultaneous streams also matter.
Discord voice chat is not working
Identify which voice symptom you have: you cannot join, you disconnect immediately, you cannot hear others, others cannot hear you, or the audio is robotic, delayed, distorted, or cutting out.
- Check Discord Status for a voice incident.
- In Discord’s Voice & Video settings, select the intended input and output devices manually.
- Use Discord’s microphone test and check the operating system’s volume mixer and mute state.
- Confirm that Discord has microphone permission.
- Try push-to-talk. If push-to-talk works, voice-activity detection or input sensitivity may be the problem.
- Try the Standard and Legacy audio subsystems where those controls are available. Labels and available options vary by version and device.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or restrictive firewall.
- Try another voice-server region if the problem appears to be a connection route.
- Use headphones or lower speaker volume if other people hear an echo.
- Close other applications that may be using the microphone or camera.

Microphone or camera permissions are blocked
A microphone can work in another application and still be blocked specifically for Discord. Check both the operating system and Discord or browser permissions.
- Close other apps that may be using the microphone or camera.
- Make sure the device is connected, not physically muted, and that a camera lens is not covered.
- Open your operating system’s privacy settings and allow Discord to use the microphone and camera.
- If you use Discord in a browser, grant permission to the Discord website itself—not just to the browser application.
- Select the correct devices in Discord’s Voice & Video settings.
- Restart Discord after changing permissions.
- Test another microphone, camera, USB port, or browser.
Exact menu names vary between Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and browser versions, so use the current platform controls and Discord’s official guide rather than relying on an old menu path.
Images, videos, GIFs, or attachments will not load
Media failures may be caused by a Discord media-proxy or CDN incident, network filtering, a browser extension, stale cache, a client problem, insufficient mobile storage, a particular attachment, or server and channel restrictions.

- Check Discord Status for a media-related incident.
- Try the same channel or attachment in another client.
- Test another network.
- Temporarily disable extensions, VPNs, or privacy tools that filter network traffic.
- Refresh or restart Discord.
- Clear the client or browser’s Discord cache and site data.
- Update the app and operating system.
- Check whether only one file, channel, or server is affected.
- On mobile, check available storage and attachment permissions.
If only one attachment fails, the problem may belong to that file or its channel rather than Discord’s media system.
Discord is stuck updating or caught in an update loop
- Force-quit Discord and reopen it.
- Restart the device.
- Check available disk space.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy.
- Check firewall and antivirus behavior. Prefer an exception for Discord or its updater rather than disabling protection permanently.
- Clear the relevant Discord cache and temporary files while the app is closed.
- Try the installer with the permissions required by your operating system.
- If the loop continues, download a fresh installer from Discord’s official site and reinstall.
A fresh installation can repair damaged updater files, but it will not solve a service outage, blocked network, or account problem.
Discord Web is not working
Browser Discord can fail because of an outdated browser, stale cookies or site data, extensions, script blockers, privacy tools, or missing microphone and camera permissions.
- Reload the Discord tab.
- Open Discord in a private or incognito window.
- Disable extensions for Discord, especially script, ad, privacy, and network-filtering extensions.
- Check Discord’s microphone and camera site permissions.
- Clear Discord’s site data and sign in again if necessary.
- Try another compatible, up-to-date browser.
- Compare the result with the desktop or mobile app.
Discord’s browser compatibility and available controls can change. Keep the browser current and consult the current official voice and video guide for browser-specific permission checks.

- Update Discord through the official App Store or Google Play Store.
- Update iOS or Android if an update is available.
- Check free storage.
- Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data.
- Check microphone and camera permissions.
- Review battery-saving, background-data, and network restrictions that may suspend Discord.
- Clear the app cache where your platform provides that option.
- Reinstall from the official app store if the problem continues.
iOS and Android have different controls. Clearing cache is not the same as clearing storage or app data; the latter may sign you out or remove local app data. Discord recommends checking platform compatibility, updates, permissions, cache or data controls, and official reinstallation steps in its troubleshooting guidance.
Discord login, verification, or account access is failing
Do not keep reinstalling Discord for an authentication problem. Incorrect passwords, inaccessible verification email, two-factor authentication failures, CAPTCHA loops, disabled accounts, and restrictions require account support rather than client repair.

First check the exact error, try the official web login, confirm access to the email account, and make sure your device’s date and time are correct. If login works in one client but not another, continue with browser, cache, extension, and network tests. For account-specific errors, use the official Discord Help Center and its support request routes.
Never give a support contact your password, authentication code, recovery code, or Discord token. Do not publish private messages or account details in a public bug report.
When to contact Discord Support or report a bug
Escalate when the problem is reproducible, persists across clients and networks, repeatedly shows a specific error, began after a Discord or operating-system update, causes consistent crashes, or matches an entry on Discord’s Known Issues page. The list changes, so treat individual entries as time-sensitive rather than permanent explanations.

Before submitting a report through Discord’s official support form, collect:
- Device and operating system
- Discord platform: desktop, browser, iOS, or Android
- Browser name and version, if relevant
- Discord version, if available
- Exact error message
- Approximate date and time the problem began
- Whether one server or every server is affected
- Whether another client or network works
- Steps that reproduce the problem
- Screenshots or diagnostic logs, if Discord requests them
Include enough detail for someone else to reproduce the failure, but never include passwords, tokens, authentication codes, or private conversations.
