Elden Ring is considered an RPG because it combines real-time action combat with character building: you shape your character’s capabilities and fighting style through stats, weapons, magic, skills, and equipment. Its director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, called it “a third-person action RPG” in a 2019 interview with Xbox Wire. “Action RPG” captures both sides of the game: how you fight and how you develop your character.
What makes Elden Ring an RPG?
The role-playing element is the ability to develop a character and decide what kind of combatant to become. Bandai Namco describes players creating a character and defining a playstyle by experimenting with weapons, magical abilities, and skills found in the world. Its official game page also describes different ways to approach combat, including direct attacks, stealth, and calling allies for help.

Those choices affect how a player handles encounters. A character built around close-range weapons approaches danger differently from one who relies on spells, ranged attacks, or a combination of disciplines. The game gives players room to adjust their approach rather than requiring one fixed combat role.
Why is Elden Ring an action RPG?
“Action” describes the immediate, real-time combat. Players must respond to enemy attacks, time their own moves, and evade danger; character development does not replace those moment-to-moment demands. Miyazaki said Elden Ring retains responsive melee combat, while Bandai Namco Europe’s beginner’s guide emphasizes precise timing, evasion, and challenging encounters.

“RPG” describes the character-building choices layered into that combat. The two labels are not opposites: Elden Ring asks players both to make real-time decisions during a fight and to shape the abilities and equipment they bring into it.
How do classes and builds shape your role?
Starting classes provide an initial archetype and loadout, not a permanent assignment. Bandai Namco Europe names options such as samurai, prophet, hero, and astrologer, while emphasizing there is no single prescribed build or path. A starting choice helps determine how a character begins; the broader equipment and ability options let players develop in different directions.

The publisher’s launch announcement gives examples of possible roles: knights, thieves, archers, sorcerers, or mixtures of disciplines. Players can equip skills to weapons and summon spirits to assist against difficult enemies. These systems let players decide how to meet challenges rather than locking them into one role.
Why do some players question the RPG label?
People may use “RPG” more narrowly to mean games centered on dialogue choices, branching stories, party management, or a strongly authored protagonist. Elden Ring places conspicuous emphasis on combat and player-built capabilities, so it may not match every reader’s preferred idea of role-playing.

There is no universal checklist for the genre established by the cited sources. The clearest grounded description is the one Miyazaki gave: Elden Ring is an action RPG, with character customization and development alongside action-focused play. He contrasted it with Sekiro by saying Elden Ring puts more focus on RPG elements, while Sekiro has a heavier focus on action; that comparison does not mean Sekiro has no RPG-like systems.

Bandai Namco Europe describes a risk-and-reward loop in which currency earned from enemies can be used for stat upgrades, but defeat can put that currency at risk. This is one of the game’s Soulslike conventions, not a requirement that defines RPGs as a whole.
