If you’re asking “Why is CurseForge not working for Minecraft?”, first identify where it fails: opening the app, installing a modpack, launching Minecraft, signing in, or running the game. Check the connection only when the error points to it
A failed download or connection can involve an unstable network, a service-side issue, or interference from a firewall, antivirus, VPN, proxy, or macOS Private Relay. Check the error-specific guidance before changing security settings. Avoid disabling protection broadly; use only the steps relevant to the error you see.
Check the modding folder permissions
If CurseForge cannot create or access its modding directory, the folder may not allow the required read or write access, or the chosen path may be unsuitable. Check the folder permissions and follow the official guide’s instructions for choosing an appropriate location. Why won’t my Minecraft modpack launch from CurseForge?
Match Minecraft version and modloader
A mod or modpack must match the Minecraft version and modloader used by its profile. A file made for another version or loader may not install or run in that profile. CurseForge supports profiles using Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla, but compatibility depends on the specific game version and mod. Check the profile and the modpack or mod’s listed requirements in CurseForge’s mod and modpack installation guide.
Check Java and the runtime error
CurseForge Support states in its document “Minecraft Modpacks – Installation and Launch Issues,” modified July 13, 2026, that “Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks.” The guide discusses missing or outdated Java as a possible cause. Use its instructions if the error indicates a Java or runtime problem rather than changing Java settings as a catch-all.

Distinguish a modpack failure from a launcher failure
CurseForge’s direct-launch flow is a beta, and some Minecraft version and modloader combinations are listed as unsupported. If direct launch or authentication fails, try launching through the Minecraft launcher to help determine whether the issue is specific to CurseForge’s direct-launch path. Why can’t CurseForge log in to Minecraft?
For an authentication error, follow the instructions for that exact message in the Minecraft login troubleshooting guide. Confirm you are using the account that owns Minecraft, then test by switching back to the Minecraft launcher. If the launcher works but CurseForge direct launch does not, the issue may be limited to the beta direct-launch path or a combination it does not support.

If CurseForge displays “Play Demo,” its support guidance says this typically indicates an account-login issue. Log out and back in with the account that owns the game, using the official steps for the error.

When to contact CurseForge support
If the matching official steps do not resolve the issue, export the CurseForge logs and provide them with the exact error text and a short description of the last successful step. Logs help support distinguish a failed download, runtime or launcher problem, authentication issue, and mod configuration crash.
