Fortnite may block you from readying up because matchmaking or network services are having trouble, your party or platform has an issue, or party matchmaking is slow during a live event. Check Epic’s service status first; if it looks normal, restart the game and narrow down whether the problem affects solo matchmaking, your party, or your connection. Without your platform, mode, and exact error message, there is no way to identify one cause for certain.
1. Check Fortnite’s service status first
Visit Epic Games Public Status and check Fortnite’s login, parties/friends/messaging, and matchmaking components. If Epic reports an outage or maintenance, wait for it to be resolved and try again; repeatedly changing local settings is unlikely to help while the service is unavailable.
When checked on October 8, 2026, those components were marked operational, and the visible history showed no incidents from October 2–8, 2026. That is only a snapshot: status can change, and an operational listing does not rule out a local or intermittent problem.
2. Restart Fortnite and note any error
If the relevant services appear operational, fully close and reopen Fortnite, then try to ready up again. Epic specifically recommends checking status and restarting Fortnite for matchmaking Error #5. For Errors #1–#3, Epic says server maintenance or a network connection issue is a common cause; its guidance is to check status, troubleshoot the connection, and submit an in-game bug report if the issue persists.

Use the exact displayed error to choose the next step rather than treating every ready-up failure as the same problem. See Epic’s guidance for matchmaking Errors #1, #2, or #3 and matchmaking Error #5.
3. Find out whether it is a party-only problem
Try solo matchmaking if the mode allows it. If solo queue works but your group cannot enter, focus on the party: note which member cannot join, their platform, and any error shown. If nobody can matchmake, a service or broader connection issue is more plausible, though neither result alone proves the cause.

If you see party-joining error -91
Epic has a specific checklist for error -91; it is not a diagnosis for every ready-up failure. Its suggestions include verifying game files on PC, clearing the console cache, checking that crossplay is enabled on PlayStation or Xbox, checking console NAT, and restarting the router and device. Follow the instructions for your platform in Epic’s error -91 guide.
4. Account for live-event delays
During a Fortnite live event, party matchmaking may be slower than usual. Epic’s event guidance suggests that each player try joining individually; if servers are overloaded, check status and wait briefly before trying again. This is a useful branch when the failure begins around an event, not a general explanation for problems at other times. Epic’s live-event help has the related instructions.

5. Troubleshoot the connection if matchmaking still fails
If Fortnite’s status looks normal and restarting did not help, use Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide. It covers router restarts, DNS and device-clock checks, cache resets, proxy settings, DNS flushing, and background applications. Start with steps relevant to your device, follow the platform-specific instructions, and change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped. Avoid advanced network changes unless the official guide calls for them.

For persistent matchmaking Errors #1–#3, Epic recommends submitting an in-game bug report. Include the exact error text, your platform and game mode, whether you were in a party, whether solo queue works, and when the problem started (especially if it coincided with an update or live event). Those details help distinguish a party-specific failure from a wider matchmaking or connection problem.
