Why Is Jiub a Saint in The Elder Scrolls?

Jiub’s sainthood is the result of a redemption story: he left crime behind, hunted Vvardenfell’s cliff racers, and earned Vivec’s admiration.

Jiub is a saint because he turned from a life of crime toward serving Morrowind by hunting Vvardenfell’s cliff racers. Vivec admired his actions and made him a saint. In The Elder Scrolls, his title honors that campaign and his redemption.

How Jiub earned the title

Jiub was a Dunmer assassin who was imprisoned after a failed attempt on a high-ranking House Redoran official. His past was also tied to skooma addiction. After his imprisonment and return to Morrowind, he chose to change course and serve its people. The Jiub character overview summarizes that change, while the in-universe account in the UESP lore book describes his campaign and canonization.

He made the cliff racers of Vvardenfell his target. The lore account says one battle lasted two days and ended with Jiub killing seventy-six cliff racers. That number is a claim within the fictional account, not a real-world statistic. His campaign ultimately made him known as the hero who drove the creatures from Vvardenfell.

Why Vivec made him a saint

In the lore account, Vivec admired Jiub’s virtue and made him a saint after saving him from death. The sainthood is therefore tied both to the service he rendered by fighting the cliff racers and to his change from a criminal past to a life devoted to Morrowind. The Prima Games guide to “Impatience of a Saint” uses the familiar shorthand of Jiub as the mysterious hero who drove the Cliff Racers from Vvardenfell.
