When you can’t type in Sims 4, the cause is usually one of four things: the game isn’t receiving focus on the field you clicked, another program on your PC is intercepting keystrokes, a mod or cached file is interfering, or on console the on-screen keyboard session has stalled. There is no single confirmed bug behind every case, so the practical approach is to work through the checks below from least to most disruptive, and stop as soon as typing returns.
Start by narrowing the problem
Your answers to four questions decide which steps are worth trying first.
- Which field fails? If only the cheat console fails, the problem is more likely focus or the console session. If every text box fails, including the name fields and search, the game is probably not receiving keyboard input at all.
- Does the keyboard work elsewhere? Type into a browser or Notepad. If that fails too, the fault lies with the keyboard, its driver, or the operating system, and Sims 4 settings won’t fix it.
- Are other programs running? Overlays from the EA app, Steam, Discord, and similar tools draw on top of games and can take keyboard input.
- Does the problem happen with mods installed? You can only answer this by testing without them.
A visible blinking cursor does not prove that Sims 4 is receiving your keystrokes. Focus and overlays are the most common explanations in the community reports reviewed for this article, which is why they come early in the sequence.
Step 1: Refocus the field and reopen the cheat console
This costs nothing and changes nothing in your game, so do it first.

- Click once outside the stuck field, then click back into it.
- If you are in Build or Buy mode and the cheat console is involved, close the console.
- Select the Select tool, so the game is not waiting on a placement action.
- Reopen the console with Shift+Ctrl+C and try typing again.
This sequence comes from a community forum reply about Build/Buy mode. It is player troubleshooting advice, not official Electronic Arts documentation, and it may not match every version of the game.
Step 2: Turn off overlays and try windowed mode (PC)
If refocusing fails, test whether another program is intercepting input. On PC, temporarily disable:

- The EA app overlay
- The Steam overlay
- The Discord overlay
- Any other overlay, recording, or screen-annotation tool
Then relaunch Sims 4. If typing works, turn the overlays back on one at a time to find the culprit, or leave the offending one off. A marked-solution reply on an EA technical support thread recommended this approach, and a separate discussion suggested windowed mode as an additional test. Neither is a guaranteed fix on current builds; treat both as diagnostic checks.
Step 3: Test without mods and custom content (PC and Mac)
Mods are not part of the base game, and they are only available on PC and Mac. EA Help states that mods are created by the community and are not pre-screened or endorsed by EA or Maxis. That is a statement about their origin, not evidence that any particular mod is at fault.

To test, make the changes reversibly:
- Close Sims 4 completely.
- Move your
Modsfolder out of the Sims 4 user folder (typicallyDocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4) to your desktop or another location. Do not delete it. - Delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom the same user folder, which is a cache file. - Launch the game and try typing in the same field.
- If typing works, move mods back in small groups to find the one causing the problem. Return the cache file as well, or let the game create it again.
Keep a copy of everything you move. Restoring the original folder is the only way to get your content back exactly as it was.
Step 4: Repair the game, then test a fresh user folder
If the test without mods changes nothing, the next layer is the game installation and your user data. Community troubleshooting suggests two steps, in this order.

- Repair the game. In the EA app, open your library, select The Sims 4, open its settings, and choose the repair option. Repair checks game files and replaces damaged ones, so expect a download, and keep your saves in place.
- Isolate the user folder. Close the game, then rename the Sims 4 user folder, for example to
The Sims 4 old. The game creates a new one on launch. Start a new save and test typing there.
Before renaming anything, back up your saves folder and your settings. If the fresh folder works, you have isolated a user-data problem; copy saves back one at a time, and test after each one. To return to your original setup, close the game, delete the new folder, and rename the old one back. The forum thread recommending this approach was not an official data-safety guarantee, so do not skip the backup.
On PlayStation and Xbox
Console keyboard problems need console-specific steps. In an older console thread, a community helper recommended two actions, in order:

- Leave Sims 4 to the console home screen, then return to the game. This resets the input session and is the lowest-risk first attempt.
- If that fails, fully shut down the console and restart it, then launch the game again.
Modding and the PC overlay and folder steps above do not apply to console. Because the source was a single older case, do not expect this to work on every console software version.
If the keyboard fails outside Sims 4
If typing fails in other programs too, stop troubleshooting the game. Check the keyboard connection, try another keyboard or USB port, and check the operating system’s keyboard and input settings. These checks are general troubleshooting rather than findings from the community reports, but they are the right next step when the fault is not limited to Sims 4.

What is and isn’t established
The available evidence is community troubleshooting on Electronic Arts forums and a single official EA Help article about mods. It does not establish which game versions are affected, that there is a confirmed universal bug, or that any one fix works across Windows, macOS, PlayStation, and Xbox. Forum reports cannot tell you how common this problem is, so treat each suggestion as a test that may or may not match your case.
What to include when asking for help
If none of the steps restore typing, the following details make a support request far more useful:
- Platform (PC, Mac, PlayStation, or Xbox) and your game version
- Whether the keyboard works in other programs
- Which fields fail, and whether the cheat console is affected
- Which overlays were running during the test
- Whether typing fails in a mod-free test, and what happened after the repair or fresh-folder test
Those answers tell you which branch of this guide applies, and they are the information support staff will ask for first.
