A greyed-out or missing Ready Up button has no single cause. The fastest fix depends on where you see it and what message appears beside it. Start by identifying the screen, then work through the checks below in order. If the problem is tied to a live event or a matchmaking error, Epic Games’ own guidance gives specific first steps.
What Ready Up does in the lobby
In the Fortnite lobby, Ready Up is the control you use to change your status from Not Ready to Ready. Epic’s official Fortnite documentation describes it this way: you select PLAY! to switch from Not Ready to Ready, and once enough party members are ready, the party enters a game together. The documentation describes this lobby behavior but does not list every condition that can disable the control or cause it to disappear, so the troubleshooting below is built from the context in which you see the problem.

Identify the context first
The same label can mean different things depending on where it appears. Before changing settings or restarting anything, note which of these situations matches your screen.
| Where you see the problem | What it usually looks like | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Main lobby, before a match | The PLAY! or Ready control is greyed out, or shows a disabled state | Whether your party is still forming, whether friends have joined, and whether the selected mode is currently available |
| Returning from a match | The lobby Play button stays greyed out after a game ends | Whether restarting Fortnite clears the state; a 2023 Xbox player report describes this and says a restart resolved that user’s symptom |
| Live Event | Slow or failed party matchmaking, or a matchmaking error after readying up | Whether other players can join individually, and Epic’s live-event guidance (see below) |
| Creative Matchmaking Portal | Players cannot ready up through a Matchmaking Portal device | Whether you are the party leader, since Epic’s Creative permissions documentation assigns matchmaking initiation to the leader and readiness to party members |
| Explicit error after pressing Ready Up | A message such as Matchmaking Error #1 | The exact error text, and whether the same island or mode is affected for other players |
Steps to take when the button is disabled
- Note the screen and mode. Record whether the control is in the main lobby, on the post-match screen, inside a Live Event, or on a Creative island, and the exact message, if any.
- Check the party. Confirm everyone who is meant to play is in the same party and that the party is not still forming. Ready Up only moves the party forward when enough members are ready.
- Check the mode and island context. Some modes and Creative islands have their own entry requirements or role rules. If the mode is unavailable, the control may not behave as in standard Battle Royale.
- Check service status. If you see an error or a matchmaking delay, check Epic Games Status and the Fortnite Status page for known incidents before changing local settings.
- Restart Fortnite. A restart clears a stuck lobby state. This is the step Epic recommends for players stuck finding a server or receiving a matchmaking error, and it is also the step that resolved the 2023 Xbox report.
- Retry after a short wait. If servers are overloaded, wait a few minutes before trying again.
- Contact Epic Support. If the problem continues, use Epic Games Player Support’s gameplay support category for Fortnite Battle Royale, which includes a topic titled “I’m missing the ‘Ready Up’ button in Fortnite.” When you write in, include your platform, game mode, the exact screen, party size and setup, and the full error text.
Live Event matchmaking
Epic’s Player Support guidance on Live Event access problems says party matchmaking may be slower than usual during an event. It recommends that each player try joining individually rather than waiting on the whole party to move together. For players who are stuck finding a server or receive a matchmaking error, Epic recommends restarting Fortnite and checking Epic Games Status and Fortnite Status for known issues. If servers are overloaded, it advises waiting a few minutes before trying again.

This guidance is written for Live Events. Use it as your first response when the failure happens during an event. It is not a guaranteed fix for every lobby problem.
Creative Matchmaking Portal
In Creative, the Matchmaking Portal device separates roles. The party leader starts matchmaking, and party members can ready up. If you are not the leader and cannot start the process, that is the expected role split for this device. The same restriction is not documented for ordinary Battle Royale parties, so do not apply it to standard lobby problems.

What the reports do and do not show
Two community reports describe symptoms that look similar to yours, but neither is a current official diagnosis.
- Epic Developer Community forum, 2025: a report of Matchmaking Error #1 after Ready Up on one UEFN island, affecting PC, console, and mobile. It describes a bug on that specific island in 2025. It does not show that a general Fortnite defect is responsible today.
- Reddit r/FortNiteBR, 2023: an Xbox player reported that the lobby Play button became greyed out after returning from a match, and that restarting cleared it. This is one player’s experience, not a verified cause or a lasting fix.
As of this writing, Epic’s public guidance does not tie Ready Up failures to a specific, widespread bug, and no current official notice confirming a Ready Up outage was found. Check Epic Games Status at the time the problem occurs, because service incidents change quickly.

Wording players use
If you are searching for help, the phrasings players commonly use include “the Ready Up button is greyed out,” “the button says Disabled,” “I’m missing the Ready Up button,” and “I get a matchmaking error when I ready up.” These describe symptoms, not one shared cause, so match the phrase to the screen in the table above before choosing a fix.

- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
