What’s actually slowing this PC down?

GeForce NOW stuttering can come from uneven video streaming, choppy or delayed controls, or processing delay from a TV or display. Those symptoms point to different causes, so identify which one you are seeing before changing settings. Start with GeForce NOW’s network test and the requirements for your device and stream target; then test one change at a time.
First, identify what is stuttering
GeForce NOW runs a game on a remote computer and streams the picture and sound to your device. That makes the network an important part of the experience, but it does not explain every kind of choppiness.
- Uneven or degraded video: the picture may hitch, become blurry, or change quality. Check the connection between your device and the GeForce NOW data center.
- Choppy or delayed controls: inputs may feel late or inconsistent even when the picture looks relatively smooth. Network conditions can contribute; if the issue happens specifically with a mouse, test its polling rate.
- Display delay: the stream may look smooth, but actions feel late on a TV. Some TVs add processing delay, so check the display’s picture settings.
Keep track of your device, whether you are using the GeForce NOW app or a browser, your location or region, and the resolution and frame-rate target. NVIDIA’s requirements vary by device and stream mode, so use the current GeForce NOW system requirements for your setup.
Check the GeForce NOW connection, not just an internet speed test
Run the network test in the GeForce NOW app and compare its results with NVIDIA’s requirements for your device and target stream. NVIDIA lists example minimum bandwidths of 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD or UW QHD at 120 FPS. Higher resolutions and frame rates have higher requirements; consult the device-specific table rather than treating these examples as universal targets. NVIDIA also requires latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. These are NVIDIA-published service requirements, not results of an independent performance study.

A regular internet speed test can show whether your connection has ample download capacity, but it does not reproduce the end-to-end route to an NVIDIA data center. Meeting a bandwidth figure alone does not rule out high latency, jitter, packet loss, or a problem along that route. Use the GeForce NOW test and any streaming indicators available in your client to judge the session.
Test Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi before replacing equipment
NVIDIA recommends a wired Ethernet connection or a router using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If you are on Wi-Fi and suspect it is the weak segment, try moving closer to the router or connecting by Ethernet if your device supports it. If you stay on Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz when supported. A cable is a useful comparison, not a guaranteed cure: it cannot fix ISP congestion, a poor route to the data center, an NVIDIA service issue, or a struggling local device.

Choose a connection test that fits your setup:
| Option | When it is useful to test | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | Your device has a compatible port or adapter, and Wi-Fi signal quality or interference may be contributing. | Requires a cable and a practical route from the router to the device. It only changes the local connection segment. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Your device and router support it, and you want to test Wi-Fi without running a cable. | Results depend on the device, distance, and physical layout. A new router is not the first step; test the existing setup before considering equipment. |
Make one comparison under similar conditions—for example, the same game and stream target—so you can tell whether the connection change made a difference.
Pause heavy household network use for a comparison
For a short diagnostic test, pause large downloads, video streaming, or file sharing on your home network. NVIDIA mentions these bandwidth-heavy activities in its SHIELD streaming-quality troubleshooting guide. That guide is older and specific to SHIELD, so treat this as a basic experiment rather than a guaranteed fix on every current device.

If only mouse input stutters, lower its polling rate
If the problem is specifically mouse movement or response—not dropped or uneven streamed video—try setting the mouse polling rate to 125 Hz and compare. NVIDIA lists this as a targeted suggestion on its system requirements page. It is not a general remedy for network latency or video-frame problems.
On SHIELD and TV setups, check display processing
Some TVs add delay through image processing. On a SHIELD/TV setup, try the TV’s Game Mode or disable image-processing features, following the TV manufacturer’s instructions. Menu names and options differ by manufacturer, and this advice is specific to TV display paths; it does not apply automatically to phones, browsers, PCs, or every display.

If stuttering persists, collect details before contacting support
If the GeForce NOW network test meets the requirements and the session still stutters, record enough information to make the issue diagnosable:
- Device and whether you use the app or a browser
- App version and game
- Date and time of the session
- Location and any server or region indication shown
- Target resolution and frame rate
- Network-test results and any streaming statistics available
- Which symptom occurs: uneven video, delayed/choppy controls, or display delay
The published guidance does not establish one fix for every route-specific or service-side fault. If you contact NVIDIA support, these details can help distinguish a local connection or display issue from a problem that needs further investigation. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ also explains that you need to own or purchase a game from a supported game store to play it through the service; that is an access requirement, not a stuttering fix.
