The numbers HoYoverse publishes are the free space you should have available, not a fixed measurement of the files on your device. Requirements range from 40 GB on phones and tablets to 150 GB on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the platform matters more than any single headline number.
What the published numbers measure
HoYoverse’s official system-requirements page gives available storage figures. It does not give an exact installed file size. The game’s final footprint on your drive is a different measurement, and it can differ from the space you need free before installing or updating. Older figures still circulating online are obsolete. A HoYoverse PC FAQ dated September 25, 2020 described the game files as “quite large,” but its storage numbers no longer apply, so do not use them as current requirements.
Current platform figures
The figures below come from HoYoverse’s Help Center article “What are the system requirements to play Genshin Impact?”, last updated November 11, 2025. Check that article before relying on them, because HoYoverse says storage requirements may rise with future updates.

Why the total keeps growing
Every major version adds new content, and the download has to carry it. The space you need is therefore not a one-time number. It rises as the game adds resources, and HoYoverse’s own requirements page warns that “Storage requirements may increase with future game updates.”

Pre-installation takes space before a version goes live
HoYoverse’s update notices describe pre-installation as downloading some update resources ahead of the version release. In the Genshin Impact Official Site’s Version “Luna VIII” Update Maintenance Preview, HoYoverse listed an estimated 7 GB of pre-installation space on PC. That is a figure for one version, and it describes advance update data. Do not treat it as a permanent increase in the installed game’s size. Once the update is applied, the space used by the pre-install data is reclaimed, but the new content it brings stays on your drive.
Voice-over packs change the download size
The same Luna VIII notice states that “The exact download size may differ depending on which voice-over packs are installed.” Voice-over is therefore the main documented variable in the download figure. Two players on the same version can see different totals if they have different language packs installed. When you compare a download size with someone else’s, check which voice-over packs each of you has.

Optional resource management on mobile
A HoYoLAB community post titled “Update advice. Dealing with memory limits” describes a mobile resource-management option that it says can cut a 33 GB installation by up to 10 GB. The post’s details could not be independently checked, and the reduction depends on version and device. Treat it as a possibility for your phone, not a guaranteed saving. If the game offers this option on your device, it removes optional resources, so check what you lose before using it.

- Check free storage on the device or drive. Compare it with the figure for your platform, and leave room above the minimum for pre-installation and any voice-over packs.
- Open HoYoPlay and use the Repair Now option for Genshin Impact.
- Restart the device or PC, then try the download or update again.
- If the problem continues, reinstall the game from an official source.
The article does not explain how the updater handles patching internally. The useful distinction for you is between the space needed to complete an update and the final installed footprint. The first is what blocks an install; the second is what remains afterward.

- Confirm the free space for your platform meets the published figure, not just the minimum, if you want room for updates.
- Expect the download to grow with new versions, and check the official notice for the version’s pre-install size.
- Check which voice-over packs are installed, since they change the download total.
- On a PC, an SSD is HoYoverse’s recommendation for smoother play. It does not make the game smaller.
- If space is short, an external drive can add capacity on some platforms, but whether Genshin Impact can install or run from external storage depends on the platform. Confirm that before buying one for this purpose.
