Golduck is called Golduck because the name is simply its English spelling. No official creator statement explaining the choice of name has been found in the sources reviewed. “Gold” plus “duck” is the obvious reading, and it is a reasonable one, but it is an inference rather than a documented etymology. What official material does establish is the name’s spelling across languages, its classification as the Duck Pokémon, and the in-world lore that surrounds it.
What the official name records show
The official Pokémon World Championships 2012 Battle Dictionary, published by The Pokémon Company International in the 2011–2012 series, gives the following names for Golduck and its pre-evolution, Psyduck:
| Language | Psyduck | Golduck |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese | コダック (Koduck) | ゴルダック (Golduck) |
| English | Psyduck | Golduck |
| French | Not stated in this dictionary | Akwakwak |
| German | Not stated in this dictionary | Entoron |
| Korean | 고라파덕 (Gorapaduck) | 골덕 (Golduck) |
These entries record the names used in each language. They do not explain why the English or Japanese name was chosen. The Japanese katakana ゴルダック is itself a transliteration, and the dictionary does not say what it was meant to convey.
Why the “gold duck” reading is tempting
Read in English, Golduck combines two ordinary words. Golduck is a duck, and its name contains “gold.” That pairing is the most direct interpretation, and it is the one most readers reach first.

Two features of the Pokémon itself make the reading feel more deliberate than it may be:
- Its coloring is blue, not gold. Golduck’s body is blue, so the name does not describe its appearance in a literal way.
- Its forehead shines. The official card description says the forehead strangely shines when Golduck swims at full effort. A glowing mark can easily be linked to the idea of gold.
Those observations are useful context, but they do not confirm that the name was built from them. A reader who concludes that “gold” stands for psychic power or a golden glow is offering a fan interpretation.

What the official sources say about Golduck itself
The official Pokémon Trading Card Game Trainers Web Site entry for Golduck SV2a 055/165 classifies it as the Duck Pokémon, lists its height as 1.7 m and its weight as 76.6 kg, and places it in the Psyduck evolution line. These figures describe the creature and do not bear on its name.
The same site’s Golduck SM1S 013/060 entry adds the in-world lore. It says that people once believed that holding the red part of Golduck’s forehead could grant supernatural power, and that Golduck was overhunted because of that belief. This is fictional history within the Pokémon world. It explains a story the creature carries, not the naming decision behind it.

What Pokémon’s own guidance says about unanswered origins
Pokémon Support’s article “What are the origins, legends, and histories of Pokémon characters or trainers?”, updated January 30, 2026, states the creators’ intent that questions not already answered in the video games, animated movies, or TV shows be left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. The page does not name an individual speaker, so the guidance should be attributed to Pokémon Support rather than to a particular designer.
The article is general. It does not discuss Golduck, and it does not endorse any proposed meaning for the name. It explains why a definitive answer may never be published, not what the answer is.

How to answer the question for yourself
If you need a citable answer, use this framing:
- State the documented facts. The English name is Golduck, the Japanese name is ゴルダック, and the official Pokémon materials list it as the Duck Pokémon.
- Label the interpretation. “Gold” plus “duck” is a natural English reading, not a confirmed etymology.
- Cite the guidance. Pokémon Support’s January 30, 2026 article explains that unanswered character origins are intentionally left open.
Following that order keeps the claim accurate. Saying that Golduck was named for gold would go beyond what the official record supports.
The official Golduck card, SV2a 055/165, is listed in the Pokémon Trading Card Game Trainers Web Site database. The source confirms that the card exists. It does not establish current availability or price.
