A steady 50 FPS can point to a frame-rate limit, but it does not identify one universal cause. First check whether the counter stays almost exactly at 50 across different scenes or moves with the action. A fixed ceiling suggests a setting or display limit; fluctuating FPS is more likely to involve rendering performance. Check your platform and GTA edition, active display refresh rate, and whether the problem happens in Story Mode, GTA Online, or both.
Is 50 FPS a cap or a performance limit?
Watch the counter in more than one scene, including a menu if it displays FPS. If it remains close to 50 in different situations, investigate frame limits and synchronization first. If it rises and falls as scenes become more or less demanding, investigate graphics load and system performance instead. This is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof of the cause.

The reported symptom is real as a player question, but an individual community post cannot establish a general diagnosis: one Reddit player describes being unable to get above about 50 FPS. The platform and edition matter, too: GTA V Enhanced and Legacy, PC and console, and Story Mode and Online do not necessarily share the same settings or constraints.
Check the display and refresh rate
Confirm the refresh rate the game is actually using, not just the monitor’s advertised maximum. Check the active display mode in your operating system and the refresh-rate selection available in GTA’s display settings. If the active display is set to 50 Hz, a 50 FPS ceiling is plausible when V-Sync is enabled because synchronization can tie frame output to the display refresh rate. That possibility does not confirm that your display is running at 50 Hz or that V-Sync is responsible.

NVIDIA’s general guidance describes disabling V-Sync as a way to test whether a frame rate is tied to monitor refresh: NVIDIA FrameView 1.1 User Guide. The behavior is not unique to NVIDIA hardware; the relevant setting and available options depend on the game, GPU, and driver software.
Inspect V-Sync and frame limits
Test the in-game settings
- Open GTA’s graphics or display settings and note the current V-Sync and frame-limit settings, if available.
- For a diagnostic test, turn V-Sync off and remove any explicit frame limit. Keep other settings unchanged.
- Retest the same scene or activity and compare the FPS. If it now rises above 50, a synchronization or cap setting was likely involved. If it does not, restore your preferred settings if needed and continue diagnosing.
Disabling V-Sync is a test, not a universal recommendation: it may cause visible screen tearing. NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync explanation describes the general relationship between synchronization and display refresh; it does not diagnose a specific GTA setup.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check the GPU driver profile
Look for a per-game profile that sets a maximum frame rate or overrides V-Sync. NVIDIA and AMD control-panel labels change between software versions, so look for the game-specific profile and its frame-rate or synchronization controls rather than relying on one exact menu path. If you find an unexpected custom limit, remove it or reset that profile, then retest.

Rule out external limiters and overlays
If you use third-party frame-limit software or overlay utilities, close them temporarily and test again, changing one thing at a time. These are plausible settings to check, not a confirmed cause of every 50 FPS cap.

If FPS varies, troubleshoot performance
When the counter moves with scene complexity rather than stopping at a clean ceiling, use the same repeatable scene for each test and change one demanding graphics option at a time. If lowering settings changes the result, that points toward rendering workload; if it does not, continue with basic PC troubleshooting rather than assuming a specific setting is responsible. NVIDIA’s 2015 GTA V PC graphics and performance guide is older guidance, useful only for the broad point that scene load can affect performance.

It is a general maintenance path, not a published diagnosis for the exact 50 FPS symptom: Rockstar Games Support: GTAV PC troubleshooting.

What half-refresh V-Sync does—and does not explain
Some V-Sync modes can target half the display refresh rate. Intel’s support article for GTA V Enhanced on Intel Arc says that with V-Sync set to Half, a 75 Hz monitor results in about 37–38 FPS; setting V-Sync to Off removes that cap in the described scenario. This is a specific example, not evidence that half-refresh behavior universally explains a 50 FPS limit: Intel Support, reviewed July 23, 2026.

Only consider a display upgrade after confirming that the active display refresh rate is the limit and deciding that you want a higher refresh rate. The available evidence does not establish that a purchase is necessary to fix this symptom. If the game is capped by V-Sync, a driver profile, or an explicit limiter, changing that setting may address the limit without replacing the display.
