Why Is My Friend’s Realm Not Showing Up? Fixes for Bedrock and Java

A friend's Minecraft Realm can fail to appear for a handful of fixable reasons: a hosted world that needs the host online, an edition or version mismatch, an invitation accepted on the wrong account, or a subscription or permission setting. Here is how to check each one.

In most cases the Realm is not missing. Either the friend is running a regular world that only shows while they are online, the edition or game version does not match, the invitation was never accepted on the account that received it, or a subscription or permission setting is blocking access. Work through the checks below in order, because the first one usually settles the question.

Confirm whether it is a Realm or a friend’s hosted world

The first question is what your friend actually shared. A Realm is a server the owner sets up through Minecraft Realms. A hosted world is a single-player world the friend opens for others to join from their own game. The two behave differently, and that difference explains most “not showing up” reports.

Does the owner need to be online? Yes. It only appears while the friend is online (Join a Friend’s Minecraft: Bedrock Edition World Online) No. Minecraft Help states Realms are designed to be available without the owner online
How you join Select the friend’s world from Joinable Friends Accept an invitation, then join from the Realms list or with a join code

If the friend is hosting a regular world, ask them to start the game and confirm multiplayer is enabled for that world. If the world still does not appear while they are online, move on to the edition and account checks below.

Match the edition and game version

Realms are edition-specific. Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds and Bedrock Realms. Java players join Java worlds and Java Realms. A Java player cannot see a Bedrock Realm, and the reverse is also true, so confirm that you and the owner are both on the edition that hosts the Realm.

Minecraft | 1720 Minecoins Pack | Digital Code
  • Minecoins let you buy Minecraft content you can enjoy on your Android, iOS, Windows 10, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch devices*
  • Visit the in-game Minecraft marketplace, where you'll discover a constantly updating library of exciting new Minecraft content - from a community whose imagination knows no limits.
  • Once you've redeemed your Minecoins, they'll be linked with your Xbox Live account, so you can access your coins and purchases through all of your supported devices that run Minecraft.
  • Minecoins are a perfect gift for Minecraft players!

Update both games to the latest release. Minecraft Help notes that older versions can cause connection problems, so an outdated copy on either side can keep a Realm from appearing or connecting. See Requirements to Play Minecraft Multiplayer Games for the current requirements.

Accept the invitation through the correct flow

A Realm will not appear in your list until you accept the invitation, and the acceptance has to happen on the account the owner invited. Use the steps for your edition.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Open Minecraft and select the bell icon near Profile to open the Inbox.
  2. Select Invites and accept the Realm invitation.
  3. If you have an invite link instead, go to Play, then Realms, then + Add/join Realm, and choose Join an existing Realm. Enter the link there.

Once accepted, the Realm stays available for later sessions. The steps are documented in Accept a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realms Invitation.

  • A GIFT FOR PLAYERS — Give Minecraft players Minecoins to spend on content in the in-game Marketplace.

Java Edition

  1. Launch Java Edition and choose Minecraft Realms.
  2. Select Join Realm.
  3. An accepted invitation should appear in the available Realms list. If you were given a join code instead, enter it in the same join screen.

Java players joining a Realm do not need their own Realms subscription. The steps are described in Join a Minecraft: Java Edition Realm.

Check the account, permissions, and console subscriptions

Two account-level problems cause many of the remaining cases:

  • Wrong account. You must be signed into the Microsoft account the owner invited. This matters most on consoles and mobile devices, where a different profile may be active without you noticing. Sign out and check which account is active.
  • Multiplayer permissions. Check the account’s multiplayer permissions, including child-account settings. A restricted account can be blocked from multiplayer even when the Realm is correct.
  • Console online subscriptions. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus as relevant to multiplayer access on their platforms. Requirements vary by platform and can change, so confirm the current rule with your platform’s support or Minecraft support before assuming a subscription is the cause.

PlayStation Bedrock players have one extra requirement. To join players on other platforms or to join Realms cross-platform, the Microsoft account must be linked to the PlayStation Network account. Minecraft Help covers this in Link Your Microsoft Account to Your PlayStation Network Account in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

Ask the owner to check the Realm

If your account and edition are correct, the problem is usually on the owner’s side. Ask the owner to check the following:

  • Their Realms subscription is active. An expired subscription can stop the Realm from being reached.
  • The Realm is open, not closed or paused.
  • If connection errors continue, they should close and reopen the Realm.

Service outages can also block access. If the owner’s subscription is current and the Realm is open, but no one can connect, check Minecraft’s service status and try again later.

Restart in the right order if the Realm still will not connect

If the Realm is visible but refuses to connect, or the invitation has been accepted but the Realm still does not appear, Minecraft Help recommends the following steps, in order. Whoever is having the problem should follow them, and the owner can repeat them if needed.

  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.

  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
  1. Sign out of your Microsoft account in Minecraft, then sign back in.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Restart Minecraft.
  4. Update the game to the latest release.
  5. Confirm the device is on the supported list in the requirements article linked above.

Work through these steps before escalating. If the Realm still does not connect after all five, contact Minecraft support and include your edition, platform, game version, and the name of the Realm owner’s account.

Quick diagnostic checklist

  • Is it a Realm or a friend’s hosted world? A hosted world needs the host online.
  • Are both players on the same edition, and on the latest game version?
  • Was the invitation accepted on the invited account, through the correct edition’s flow?
  • Is the account allowed to play multiplayer, and does the console have the required online subscription?
  • For PlayStation Bedrock cross-platform play, is the Microsoft account linked?
  • Is the owner’s Realms subscription active and the Realm open?

If every item above checks out and the Realm still does not appear, the cause is most likely a service issue on Minecraft’s side rather than your setup. Retry after the restart sequence and, if needed, contact Minecraft support.

Platform requirements and subscription rules can change, so confirm them on the linked Minecraft Help articles before you act on them.
