Nintendo’s official material reviewed here does not explain why Hyrule is called Hyrule. It identifies Hyrule as the recurring world of The Legend of Zelda and traces the series through its history, but that establishes the setting—not the name’s origin.
What does Hyrule mean?
No direct etymology is established by the Nintendo sources cited here. Nintendo’s series overview describes Hyrule as the world whose history is represented across the games. That tells us what Hyrule is in the series, not why its creators chose that particular name.

Nintendo’s Japanese material writes the name as ハイラル. That is the Japanese form used for Hyrule; by itself, it does not reveal how the name was coined or prove a particular meaning.
Is Hyrule a pun on “high rule”?
A fan discussion proposes that Hyrule and its counterpart Lorule suggest “high rule” and “low rule” in English. The idea draws on the English spellings and the Japanese forms ハイラル (hairaru) and ロウラル (rōraru). It is an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from Nintendo. The available official material does not establish that “high rule” was the reason Hyrule was named.

What do Hyrule and Lorule have to do with the name?
Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview discusses Hyrule and Lorule as two worlds in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Producer Eiji Aonuma explains that the story passes between them, which gives context for the game’s subtitle. The interview explains the relationship between the worlds and the title—not the origin of Hyrule’s name.
A Famitsu search-result passage attributes to Aonuma a remark that Hyrule and Lorule felt like straightforward names after the decision to create a distinct counterpart kingdom. That comment, as surfaced, does not supply an etymology for Hyrule and should not be taken as one.

What can be said with confidence?
- Hyrule is the recurring world and setting of The Legend of Zelda.
- Nintendo connects the games with the history of that world.
- The “high rule” reading is fan-suggested wordplay, not a verified Nintendo naming explanation.
- The official sources cited here discuss Hyrule and Lorule, but do not explain why the name Hyrule was chosen.
So the careful answer is that Hyrule’s role in the series is clear, while the reason for its name remains unconfirmed in the cited material. That does not prove no creator has ever explained it elsewhere; it means these sources do not establish a definitive origin.
