Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is rated T for Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), and the content descriptor attached to that rating is Fantasy Violence. The rating reflects large-scale, fictional combat: swords, arrows and magic used against fantasy and ancient mechanical enemies, with explosive special attacks and giant Guardians that call down meteor showers and jets of lava.
The descriptor behind the T rating
The ESRB’s title entry for the game lists one content descriptor, Fantasy Violence, and the rating summary attributes the T to that descriptor. The same entry also lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element. That is a disclosure about what the game offers, not the stated reason for the rating, so it should not be read as a factor in the T.
What the Teen category means
Nintendo’s support explanation of ESRB categories says Teen is generally suitable for ages 13 and older. It also describes what Teen-category games may contain: violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent strong language.
That list describes the category as a whole. It is not a checklist that every Teen game fills. For this title, the only content descriptor the ESRB assigns is Fantasy Violence, and the 13-and-older guidance is a statement about content suitability, not a prediction of how any individual player will react.

How the ESRB defines Fantasy Violence
The ESRB defines Fantasy Violence as “violent actions of a fantasy nature, involving human or non-human characters in situations easily distinguishable from real life.” The key test in that definition is recognizability: the violence happens in a setting that is plainly not real, against creatures and machines that do not exist. That is the kind of combat the battles in Age of Calamity present.
What the rating summary describes
The ESRB’s summary for this title gives concrete examples rather than a general description of the game’s tone. It points to:
Rank #2
- Experience the events of the Great Calamity 100 years before the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game
- Dozens of gripping cutscenes shed new light on characters like Zelda, the four Champions, the King of Hyrule, and more
- Play as characters like Link, Zelda and more and learn their distinct attacks and combat styles
- The four Champions are playable for the first time
- See a lively Hyrule before it was ravaged by Calamity Ganon
- Scale and frequency: combat across large battlefields against human and fantasy enemies.
- Weapons and magic: players use swords, arrows and magical attacks.
- Forceful hits: enemies fly across the battlefield when struck.
- Explosive special attacks: special attacks that include fire, impact sounds and explosions.
- Guardian attacks: in some levels, players control giant Guardians that bombard enemies with meteor showers and jets of lava.
Taken together, these examples show that the rating is driven by how much fighting happens and how spectacular it looks, all of it stylized and fictional. The summary does not describe realistic gore, and it should not be paraphrased as if it did.
What the rating does not establish
- The ESRB publishes descriptive examples, not an internal scoring worksheet, so no numerical score or exact threshold is attached to the decision.
- The ESRB’s public summary does not cite plot themes, suggestive content or purchases as reasons for the T rating.
- The general list of Teen-category content is not evidence that this game contains every listed element.
How to check the rating yourself
- Go to the ESRB’s website and search for “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.”
- Open the title entry and confirm the rating (T for Teen) and the descriptor (Fantasy Violence).
- Read the rating summary for the examples of combat it lists, and check the interactive elements section for In-Game Purchases.
- If you are comparing this game with another Zelda title, compare each game’s own descriptors first, rather than relying on the general Teen-category list.
The game is available on Nintendo Switch. The rating discussed here is the one listed for that platform; check the ESRB entry if you are looking at a different platform or edition.
