Crashes, freezes, black screens, and closing to desktop can come from outdated files, mods, corrupted shader or configuration caches, video-memory pressure, overlays, unstable CPU settings, or a damaged save. Use the symptom table below to jump to the likely fix, and back up your saves before deleting or moving anything.

The location and timing of the crash matter. A failure before the game window appears points to a different problem than a crash while loading one save or opening Canvas. Use this table as a starting point rather than trying every fix at random.

Before troubleshooting: check your PC and platform
The current official Windows requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11, 12 GB of RAM, a graphics card with 6 GB of VRAM such as an RTX 2060 or RX 5600 XT, DirectX 12, and an SSD as the minimum baseline. The recommended tier lists 16 GB of RAM, an RTX 3070 or RX 6800 XT, DirectX 12, and more SSD space. See the official inZOI requirements and the Steam system requirements.
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee stable performance. Large worlds, high-resolution assets, shader compilation, custom content, background applications, and limited system or video memory can still cause problems. An SSD is recommended for smoother texture streaming and map loading, while additional system memory or appropriately configured virtual memory may help when the system is resource-constrained; neither is a guaranteed crash fix.

Steam and Epic note: The file-verification path below is specifically for Steam. The cache, configuration, save, and mod tests are Windows inZOI troubleshooting steps, although an Epic installation may use a different installation directory. Epic players should use the Epic Games Launcher’s own update and verification controls rather than following the Steam menus.
Protect your saves before making changes
Before clearing user data or isolating custom content, copy these items to a separate folder, such as a folder on the desktop or another drive:

Do not delete the entire DocumentsinZOI folder. It can contain saves, presets, mods, and other user data. The steps below target specific caches or configuration files and explain what each change resets.
Fix 1: Update inZOI, Windows, graphics drivers, and the applicable BIOS
Updates are the lowest-risk first step because an update-specific bug may already have a fix. The latest official Windows Steam build located for this guide is v0.9.6, released July 30, 2026, build 20260727.14099.W. Let Steam finish every pending download, restart Steam, and launch the current build rather than testing an older installation. If the game’s title screen displays a version or build number, compare it with the current patch information.
- Install all available Windows updates.
- Install the current graphics driver directly from the manufacturer: NVIDIA drivers, AMD drivers, or Intel drivers.
- Restart the PC after updating.
- If you use an Intel 13th- or 14th-generation desktop CPU, check your motherboard manufacturer’s BIOS updates. inZOI specifically recommends a BIOS update for crash problems affecting some systems with these processors.
The BIOS advice is not a universal inZOI fix. Do not flash a BIOS casually or copy settings from another motherboard. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the system is stable during the update.
Advanced Intel-only workaround
inZOI’s support guidance also describes Intel XTU as an additional workaround for the documented 13th- and 14th-generation desktop CPU instability scenario: reduce the Performance Core Ratio by two or three steps, such as from 55x to 53x, apply the change, and restart. This is an advanced, CPU-specific stability test—not a normal gaming optimization. It can reduce CPU performance and an incorrect tuning change can create system problems. Read the official Intel CPU guidance and your motherboard documentation first.
Fix 2: Verify the Steam installation
Damaged or missing packaged files can appear after an interrupted download, failed update, or installation error. Steam’s verification tool can repair those files.
- Restart the PC and open Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click inZOI, or open its gear menu.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, restart Steam, and test inZOI.
Steam documents this process in its file-verification help page. Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because some local configuration files are expected to differ. That message is not automatically proof that the repair failed.
Verification does not remove mods installed outside the files Steam tracks. It also cannot repair a damaged save, a graphics-driver problem, a shader cache, or an invalid .ini setting. If the crash began after a mod or update, continue with Fix 3 even if verification completes successfully.

Fix 3: Remove mods and custom content for a clean test
Turning mods off in the inZOI menu is not the same as removing their files. For a meaningful vanilla test, back them up and move the active files to a temporary folder outside both the inZOI and Steam installation directories.
The official Windows crash guide lists these locations:

This test is especially important if the crash started after:
- Installing or updating an outfit, hair, furniture, data, or gameplay mod.
- Updating inZOI while mods were present.
- Opening the Mods or CurseForge browser.
- Loading a save containing modded objects.
- Entering Character Studio, Build Mode, or a Zoi using modified assets.
inZOI automatically disables mods after updates or patches for stability, but that does not mean the files have been removed or that a save containing modded data is safe to load. Canvas downloads, 3D-object files, and traditional mods should all be treated as variables during testing. The official crash-resolution guide and Out of Video Memory guidance both support disabling this content while diagnosing crashes.

How to identify the offending mod
- Move every mod and custom-content file out of the active folders.
- Launch inZOI and start a new game.
- Repeat the action that previously crashed.
- If the vanilla test succeeds, restore mods in small batches.
- When the crash returns, divide that batch further until you identify the likely file or combination.
If a save depends on a removed object, do not save over your only copy while testing. A mod-free new game is the safer diagnostic than repeatedly loading and overwriting the affected save.
Fix 4: Clear the shader or PSO cache
inZOI and the graphics driver cache compiled shaders and pipeline-state data. Stale or corrupted cache data can cause a crash, black screen, or failure during shader compilation. It can also be rebuilt after a driver or game update.
Preferred method
If inZOI shows a prompt asking whether to delete the PSO cache, choose Yes. According to the official guide, the game should restart automatically after the cache is cleared.
Manual Windows method
Close inZOI completely first. If the game or another application is using a cache file, Windows may refuse to delete it; skip files that are locked and continue. Delete the contents of the relevant cache directories, not unrelated folders.

C:Users[username]AppDataLocalD3DSCacheThese cache locations can be shared with other games. Clearing them may make other games take longer to launch while their shaders are rebuilt. The first inZOI launch may also take longer than usual. That delay is expected; it does not prove the troubleshooting failed.
Use the official crash guide if your folders differ, and do not delete the entire AppDataLocal directory.
Fix 5: Reset inZOI’s .ini configuration files
Corrupted or incompatible configuration values can prevent the game from reaching the graphics menu. Reset only the configuration files so inZOI can regenerate defaults.
- Close inZOI.
- Open File Explorer and paste this path into the address bar:
C:Users[Username]AppDataLocalBlueClientSavedConfigWindows- Copy the entire
Windowsfolder to a backup location. - Delete the
.inifiles inside the folder. - Launch inZOI and let it create fresh defaults.
This resets customized graphics, controls, sound, and other settings. It should not require deleting your save files. Be careful not to remove DocumentsinZOISaveGames by mistake.
Once the game launches, keep the graphics settings conservative for the first test. Do not immediately restore ray tracing, frame generation, overlays, overclocking, or mods. The official crash-resolution guide lists this configuration reset as a separate step from save-data troubleshooting.
Fix 6: Clear webcache_4430 and GalleryPost data
This is the most targeted fix for crashes involving Canvas, the gallery, recommended posts, browser content, or an Insufficient Video Memory message during or shortly after startup. A large or corrupted web cache can add to the game’s resource load, but the message itself does not prove that your physical VRAM is full.
Delete the web cache
- Close inZOI.
- Open this location:
C:Users[username]AppDataLocalBlueClientSavedwebcache_4430- Delete the entire
webcache_4430folder. - Relaunch inZOI and test the affected screen or action.
An earlier official community notice referred to the cache more generally as AppDataLocalinZoiwebcache_4430, while the later detailed crash guide uses AppDataLocalBlueClientSavedwebcache_4430. Folder structures can change between builds. If the detailed path does not exist, search inside %LOCALAPPDATA% for webcache_4430. Delete only that matching cache folder, not all of AppDataLocal and not the entire inZOI save directory. The two official references are the current crash guide and the earlier cache notice.
Clear accumulated GalleryPost data
If the issue involves recommended posts, gallery content, or a large amount of downloaded content, open:

Fix 7: Reduce GPU load and remove software conflicts
If inZOI crashes during shader compilation, loading, Character Studio, or ordinary gameplay, reduce the graphics workload before restoring visual features one at a time:
- Set the graphics preset to Very Low or Low.
- Reduce the display resolution and resolution scale.
- Try DLSS, FSR, or XeSS in a performance-oriented mode if your hardware supports the option.
- Disable ray tracing.
- Lower shader quality, background detail, and shadow quality.
- Close overlays and capture tools, including Discord, GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App overlays, Xbox Game Bar, and recording software.
- Disable MSI Afterburner, Intel XTU, GPU tuning, CPU tuning, undervolting, and BIOS overclocking while testing.
- If possible, run the game from an SSD.
- On a laptop, confirm that Windows is assigning inZOI to the high-performance or discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
These changes reduce resource pressure and remove common software conflicts, but they do not prove that the original graphics settings were the sole cause. The official optimal-settings guide and Out of Video Memory guide recommend these types of tests.
Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
For a device-specific crash or black screen, temporarily turn off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, restart Windows, and test again:
Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings → Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling: OffThe option may not appear on unsupported hardware or drivers. On a laptop, inZOI’s known-issues guidance has also suggested launching once with the charger unplugged; if that allows the game to run, reconnect the charger afterward and continue investigating the laptop’s power or GPU profile. These are targeted workarounds, not universal performance recommendations. See the inZOI device-specific workaround and Microsoft’s HAGS documentation.
Do not misread the Out of Video Memory message
Actual VRAM pressure is one possibility, but inZOI’s official guidance also lists accumulated cache data, mods, 3D-object files, overlays, overclocking, BIOS or CPU instability, graphics settings, saves, and configuration data. If the error appears during shader compilation, combine this fix with Fixes 3 through 6 instead of only lowering one setting.
Fix 8: Separate a damaged save from a global installation problem
A crash that happens only with one save, one Zoi, one property, one modded object, or one action is a valuable clue. First back up:

- Remove mods and custom-content files from the active folders.
- Launch inZOI.
- Start a completely new game.
- Repeat the general activity that caused the crash, such as entering a mode or loading an area.
- Only after the new game works, try the affected save.
If a new game works but one existing save still crashes, the save may contain incompatible custom content or damaged data. That is a possibility, not a certainty. Keep the original save backed up and do not overwrite it while experimenting. If every save and a new game crash in the same place, the cause is more likely to be global: the build, driver, cache, configuration, hardware stability, or a current developer bug.
When the fix is probably a developer issue
Updating to v0.9.6 is important, but its patch notes describe specific fixes rather than a promise that all crash conditions are resolved. For example:
- v0.9.5 fixed a CurseForge-browser issue that could hang or crash while opening the browser. If you are on an older build, update before diagnosing that symptom.
- v0.9.6 fixed a ModKit crash when deleting a project containing hair mods.
- The July 30 known-issues information lists an AI Build crash on some AMD graphics systems; the feature was temporarily disabled.
- Registering additional textures can crash when a large number of textures are already installed.
- ModKit has had separate crash conditions involving projects with hair mods.
Check the current official known-issues list after every update. If your exact symptom is listed, lowering settings or reinstalling the game may not repair it locally. Wait for the relevant hotfix or report the issue with complete reproduction details. The game has also received major technical updates, including the Unreal Engine 5.6 update context, so launch arguments copied from old guides may no longer be appropriate.

How to report an unresolved crash
Report the problem through the official inZOI Support Center or the official technical-help file-collection instructions. Include enough information for the developers to distinguish a global crash from a save, mod, or device-specific one.
Collect DxDiag
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Select Save All Information.
Preserve crash dumps and saves

DocumentsinZOISaveGamesSend full, unedited related files when the support instructions request them, but review private information before posting publicly. DxDiag reports, logs, dumps, and paths may reveal your Windows username or computer name.
Recommended Free Tools
A useful report should state:
- inZOI version and build number.
- Whether you use Steam or Epic.
- Windows version.
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- Graphics-driver version.
- Whether mods were never used, removed, or active when the crash occurred.
- The exact point of failure and any text such as DirectX 12, EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, or Out of Video Memory.
- Whether a new game also crashes.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the save, Zoi, property, screen, mod, or action involved.
- DxDiag and relevant crash-dump files, plus the affected save when support requests it.
What not to do first
- Do not run the game as administrator by default. Current inZOI guidance prioritizes updates, file verification, mods, caches, configuration, drivers, BIOS in the specific Intel case, saves, and overlays.
- Do not use
-dx11as a universal workaround. The official requirements specify DirectX 12, and the supplied official guidance does not establish that launch argument as a standard fix. - Do not delete the entire
DocumentsinZOIfolder. That can remove saves and other user data. - Do not call every Out of Video Memory crash a VRAM failure. The message can have cache, mod, overlay, configuration, save, driver, BIOS, or settings-related causes.
- Do not flash a BIOS or tune a CPU unless the Intel-specific situation applies. Those are advanced system changes, not general crash fixes.
- Do not stop after lowering graphics settings. That misses mod conflicts, stale caches, damaged saves, CPU instability, and known developer bugs.
Recommended troubleshooting order
- Update inZOI, Windows, and the graphics driver.
- Update the motherboard BIOS only if the documented Intel 13th- or 14th-generation desktop CPU issue is relevant.
- Verify the Steam installation.
- Back up and remove mods and custom content.
- Clear the shader or PSO cache.
- Reset the inZOI
.inifiles. - Clear
webcache_4430and GalleryPost data when the symptom involves browser, Canvas, Gallery, or video memory. - Lower GPU load and disable overlays, tuning tools, and HAGS as targeted tests.
- Compare a new game with the affected save.
- Check known issues and submit DxDiag, crash dumps, save data, and reproduction steps if necessary.
This order preserves saves and mods as long as possible while progressively testing the most common causes. None of the individual fixes is guaranteed, particularly when the crash is tied to a specific patch, device, mod, or save.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the inZOI Out of Video Memory error always caused by full VRAM?
No. The error can reflect genuine graphics-memory pressure, but the official inZOI guidance also lists shader or web-cache data, mods and 3D-object files, overlays, overclocking, graphics settings, configuration data, saves, and BIOS or CPU instability. Update the driver, remove custom content, clear the relevant caches, lower resolution scale, and test a new save before concluding that the GPU is defective.
Will Steam file verification remove my inZOI mods or saves?

Neither should be your default fix. The official requirements specify DirectX 12, and current inZOI troubleshooting prioritizes updates, verification, mod isolation, cache and configuration resets, graphics settings, overlays, hardware stability, and save testing. Back up DocumentsinZOISaveGames, remove mods, and start a new game. If the new game works but the original save fails at the same point, save-specific incompatibility or damaged content is possible. Keep the original backup and include it, along with crash dumps and reproduction steps, in an official support report if requested.

Update to inZOI v0.9.6 first, then verify the Steam files, remove mods for a real vanilla test, clear shader and web caches, reset only the game’s .ini files, and compare a new game with the affected save.
