Knuckles is the power specialist and Sonic is the speed specialist. When fans say Knuckles is “more powerful,” they mean raw physical strength: SEGA’s official character profiles describe his punches as strong enough to break rocks. That is a contrast in character role and gameplay design, not a universal ranking. No official source says Knuckles beats Sonic in every matchup, transformation, or continuity.
What “more powerful” means in this comparison
In the Sonic franchise, “power” usually refers to physical strength, and “speed” refers to how fast a character moves and covers ground. SEGA frames the two characters along those lines. Knuckles’s defining trait is strength, and Sonic’s is speed. Comparing them fairly means looking at each axis separately rather than declaring one overall winner.
- Raw physical strength: Knuckles is the clear reference point. SEGA’s profiles describe his fists as powerful enough to break rocks.
- Speed and mobility: Sonic is the reference point. SEGA calls him the world’s fastest, supersonic hedgehog.
Knuckles’s strength: the rock-breaking punch
SEGA’s official Knuckles profile on Sonic Channel describes him as the guardian of the Master Emerald on Angel Island, Sonic’s rival and fighting friend, a martial-arts practitioner, and a treasure hunter. It says his powerful fists can break rocks and lists gliding and wall climbing among his abilities.
The same strength is reflected in other official material. SEGA’s Sonic × Shadow Generations character page describes Knuckles as powerfully built and repeats that his punch can break rocks. The point is consistent across these pages: physical force is the core of his specialty.

Sonic’s advantage: speed as the defining trait
SEGA’s Sonic Advance character profiles describe Sonic with the Japanese phrase 「世界最速を誇る、超音速のハリネズミ。」 In English, that reads as “The world’s fastest, supersonic hedgehog.” The translation is editorial. The original is official character-profile copy rather than a quotation from a named person.
The same profile page describes Knuckles as powerful, with a strike that can break rocks, and says that gliding and climbing expand his exploration range. Sonic’s profile puts the emphasis on velocity, while Knuckles’s profile puts it on force and terrain.

Climbing and gliding: different routes, not a bigger punch
Knuckles’s wall climbing and gliding are mobility tools, but they serve a different purpose from Sonic’s speed. In SEGA’s Sonic & Knuckles page, his powerful fists, wall climbing, and gliding support actions and routes that differ from Sonic’s. The game gives each character a different way through its stages, so the comparison is about how each one moves through the world as well as how hard each one hits.
SEGA’s Sonic & Knuckles page lists the original release as 18 October 1994 on the Mega Drive and describes Knuckles as a playable character. That makes it the best official reference for how the two characters were designed to play differently.

Strength and duty: the Master Emerald
Knuckles’s strength is tied to his role as guardian of the Master Emerald. A SEGA Sonic Channel staff column dated 7 February 2025 discusses his power alongside his inherited duty to that mission and his loyalty to it. The column is written by 速音トモコ (Hayane Tomoko), presented as a Sonic Channel staff-column writer. It contrasts the two characters with this sentence: 「ソニックが「風」ならば、彼はひとつところにとどまるべく定められた「山」。」 Editorial translation: “If Sonic is the ‘wind,’ he is the ‘mountain,’ destined to remain in one place.”
The column’s framing is useful for understanding why Knuckles is often described as the stronger character. He is the stationary guardian, and Sonic is the wanderer. That distinction is about character identity, not a measured contest.

What the evidence does not establish
- No numerical measurement: The official pages reviewed do not publish any strength score, speed figure, or statistic comparing Sonic and Knuckles. Any number circulating online is a fan calculation and is not part of the official canon.
- No universal winner: The sources support a qualitative split between power and speed. They do not establish who would win a direct fight in every continuity, form, or transformation.
- Translated and column-based sources: The Sonic Advance profile is a translation of Japanese copy, and the staff column is an official Sonic Channel feature rather than a ranking. Both support the role-based contrast, not an absolute power ordering.
For most readers, the accurate answer is that Knuckles is the more powerful fighter in the physical-strength sense SEGA emphasizes, while Sonic is the faster and more mobile character. The phrase “more powerful” describes a design role, not a verdict on every matchup.
