Marathon crashes on PC have no single known cause, so the fastest route to a fix is to identify exactly how the game fails and then run the official checks that match that pattern. Bungie’s support guidance is general troubleshooting. It does not identify a root cause for any individual machine, so treat the steps below as a sequence of tests, not a guaranteed repair list.
Identify how Marathon is failing
Before changing anything, note which of these patterns matches your problem. Each one points toward different checks and gives Bungie Support more useful information if you need to escalate.

Bungie’s support replies ask two questions that help narrow this down: whether BattlEye appears before the game closes, and whether the game closes, freezes, or restarts the PC. Note the answers before you start testing.
The eight checks, in order
1. Compare your PC with the current Marathon requirements
Bungie Support points players to its Marathon Storage and System Requirements guide. Check that guide directly rather than relying on figures copied into older articles, since requirements can change between builds. A PC that falls below the listed CPU, GPU, memory, or storage requirements is a likely cause on its own, and no other check below will resolve that.

2. Update Windows and your graphics driver, then restart
Bungie repeatedly recommends keeping Windows and GPU drivers current. Use the update tool from your GPU maker: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. After installing a driver, restart the PC fully rather than just closing the game, because a partial restart can leave the old driver active.
3. Verify the game files in Steam
If the crash began after a game update, verify file integrity. In Steam, open Library, right-click Marathon, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces any damaged or missing files. Let the process finish before launching the game again.

4. Laptops: confirm the dedicated GPU and High Performance mode
Bungie states that Marathon is not officially supported on laptops, even where the hardware meets the minimum requirements. It offers these settings only as basic troubleshooting. On a laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the Marathon executable if it is not listed, select it, choose Options, and set it to High performance. A correct setting improves the odds of stable operation but does not guarantee it.
5. Close overlays and background utilities for a test run
Bungie’s guidance lists Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, the GeForce Experience overlay, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner, among other similar tools. A later support reply also names Razer Synapse, HapticService, GameViewer, OBS, and Discord. Disable or close these for one play session. If the crashes stop, re-enable them one at a time to find the conflict. Naming a tool here does not mean it is faulty; it means it is a reversible variable worth isolating.

6. For early launch failures: restart Steam, run it as administrator, and repair BattlEye
A support reply dated August 10, 2026 for an early launch failure recommends this sequence:
- Close Steam completely, including from the system tray.
- Restart the PC.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Open the BattlEye folder inside the Marathon installation folder and run its repair or reinstall option.
If BattlEye appears and then the game exits, this sequence is the most relevant set of checks to run first.

7. Test a different drive if you can
Bungie advises trying another disk to help rule out a hardware fault. An August 2026 support response for one player also said to keep at least 52 GB free on the C: drive or move the installation to another SSD. That figure came from an individual case, so confirm current space requirements on Bungie’s requirements guide before treating it as a general rule. An SSD is an optional step for testing and extra space, not a dependable fix for crashes on its own.
8. Reinstall only after the simpler checks, then collect diagnostic data
Bungie’s installation guide lists a consistent crash as a reason to reinstall. Reinstalling is worth doing after checks 1 through 7 have failed, because it clears local game files but does not change the drivers, overlays, or Windows configuration that may be involved. A reinstall does not guarantee a fix, particularly if the cause is a game regression or a conflict at the system level.

Historical issues that may explain a crash
Marathon’s March 11, 2026 Update 1.0.0.4 notes say the update fixed “a crash that sometimes occurred when attempting to use an IME Keyboard.” The same note states: “Windows built-in IME may be a temporary workaround for users who are experiencing issues while we work on a permanent fix.” If you use a third-party Input Method Editor for Japanese, Chinese, or Korean text, switching to the Windows built-in IME is a reasonable test. This is a documented past issue, and the notes do not say whether it still occurs on the current build.
A support response dated March 18, 2026 said Bungie was seeing a rise in loading-screen crash reports and was investigating. That was a dated report about the state of the game at that time, so check current Bungie support posts before assuming it applies to your build.
What to send Bungie Support
If the crash persists after the checks above, report the failure pattern from the table, the date it began, whether it followed a game update or a driver or Windows change, and whether you ran the Steam verification and BattlEye steps. Support replies request a DxDiag report. To create one, press Win + R, type dxdiag, press Enter, then select Save All Information on the main page. Bungie Support has stated in an official reply dated July 22, 2026, in response to a PC/Steam startup-crash report: “Rest assured that crashes are automatically reported to us when they occur.” Include the DxDiag file and any relevant Windows Event Viewer entries, but do not expect a reply within a specific timeframe, and do not treat the report as a guaranteed fix.
Use Bungie’s support posts for current status. Titles such as “Game Crash/Closing,” “Crashing on PC,” and “Marathon does not launch” are the terms they use, and searching with them should surface the most recent replies.
