Why Is My Farming Villager Not Farming? Causes and Fixes

A farmer villager that stands idle is most often blocked by the mobGriefing game rule. Here is how to check the rule, the farmer job site, crops, farmland and the walking route.

The most likely cause is that the mobGriefing game rule is set to false. Villagers cannot farm while it is disabled. If the rule is on, the villager must be a farmer, the field must have crops or plantable farmland, and the villager must be able to walk to the work area. Check those four things in that order.

Start with the mobGriefing game rule

The Minecraft Wiki’s crop farming tutorial and its historical villager reference both state that villagers cannot farm when mobGriefing is false. This is the first thing to rule out, because a correctly built farm will still sit idle if the rule is off.

  • Java Edition: run /gamerule mobGriefing to read the current value. If it returns false, run /gamerule mobGriefing true. Commands require cheats to be enabled in the world, or operator permissions on a server.
  • Bedrock Edition: the option is a world setting labelled Mob Griefing in the game settings. Turn it on, then return to the world. Labels can differ slightly between Bedrock releases, so search the settings menu for “Mob Griefing” if you cannot find it under the expected tab.

The rule is saved per world. Changing it in one world does not affect another, and a farm that worked on a different save may fail in a new one for this reason alone.

Confirm the villager is actually a farmer

The crop farming tutorial sets up the farm around a farmer villager that uses a composter as its job block. A villager only works a field when it holds the farmer profession, which depends on claiming a composter. Two things commonly break this:

  • Jada Toys – Bringing legendary gaming characters to life with expertly crafted die-cast collectibles designed for fans and collectors
  • The villager has no composter in reach, so it never claimed a job site and stays unemployed.
  • Another villager has already claimed the composter you placed, so the villager you are watching has nothing to claim.

To check, open the villager’s trade screen. A farmer shows farmer trades. If the villager has the wrong profession, or none, place an unclaimed composter within its reach. If another villager has claimed it, place a second composter for the intended farmer, or break the composter the wrong villager is using so the farmer can claim a new one. Breaking a job block releases the claim, so the villager that lost it will search for another.

Check the crops and planting conditions

The historical villager reference describes farmers harvesting mature wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroot, and planting when the villager has eligible planting items and there is farmland available. That page is explicitly old, so treat its thresholds and ranges as past behaviour rather than a guarantee for current versions.

  • An ideal gift for video game gamers and adventure enthusiasts, ages 6 and up.
  • Harvesting: only fully grown crops are harvested. A field of seedlings will not be touched until they mature.
  • Planting: the villager needs seeds or other eligible planting items in its inventory, and the field needs empty farmland. A field full of crops with nothing to plant can look like a stalled farm even when the villager is working correctly.
  • Farmland: check that the plots are actually farmland blocks and not dirt or grass, since the villager cannot plant on other surfaces.

Check access and layout

Farm tutorials place villagers in their assigned spaces with workstations and rely on pathfinding to move them between the job block and the field. If the villager cannot walk to either, it will stand still no matter how correct the rest of the setup is. Walk the route yourself and look for:

  • Gaps, slabs or fences that block a step the villager would need to take.
  • A field placed beyond the villager’s reach from its composter.
  • Doors, trapdoors or other blocks that may stop movement in one edition but not another.

Some farm designs depend on edition or version behaviour. If a design from a video or guide works for its author but not for you, the difference is often the layout assumption rather than a fault in your world.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Symptom Most likely cause What to check
Villager never changes the field mobGriefing is false Read the value with /gamerule mobGriefing in Java, or the Mob Griefing setting in Bedrock
Villager does not act like a farmer No composter claimed, or another villager claimed it Profession shown in the trade screen and the composter’s location
Crops are not harvested Crops are not yet fully grown Growth stage of each crop in the field
Crops are not replanted No eligible planting items in inventory, or no empty farmland Villager inventory and the field’s farmland blocks
Villager stays at the job site and does not reach the field Path blocked or field out of reach Walk the route from composter to field and remove any obstruction

What the composter does

Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock creator reference, last updated 2026-03-24, documents minecraft:behavior.work_composter. It lets an NPC use a composter point of interest to convert excess seeds into bone meal, and its properties include whether the entity can fill or empty the composter. This is a reference for a creator behaviour component, so it explains the composter’s role in the code rather than offering a full guide to villager farming. It is still useful for understanding why the composter is central to the farmer setup. See the Microsoft Learn composter entry.

Known reports

The Mojang bug tracker has an issue, MC-148671, with a title about farmer villagers not harvesting or planting crops. The details of that report could not be confirmed here, so use it as a comparison point for your symptoms rather than as proof that it explains your farm. If your symptoms match the report and the checks above all pass, that is the right place to look.

If the checks do not solve it

Several of the cited sources are old or cannot be checked for every edition, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all fix for timing, block range or pathfinding. Before asking for help, note the following:

  • Your edition: Java or Bedrock.
  • Your exact game version, shown on the title screen or in the launcher.
  • The current value of mobGriefing in that world.
  • Whether the villager has the farmer profession and which composter it uses.
  • The crops in the field, their growth stage, and whether the villager has planting items.
  • A description of the path from the composter to the field.

With those details, the problem can usually be narrowed to one cause.
