If your Minecraft iron farm has stopped producing golems, first check whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and which version: their villager and village rules differ, so a farm built from the wrong edition’s tutorial may not work. Then check villager links and work (especially in Bedrock), the farm’s spawnable area, and whether a golem is alive nearby but outside the collection system. Without your edition, version, and layout, there is no single cause to assume.
Why is my iron farm not spawning golems?
Work through the checks below in order. Avoid rebuilding the villager pod until you have confirmed the farm’s edition-specific requirements and searched for golems that may be spawning outside the trap.
- Identify your edition and version. Check the title screen or launcher. Use a farm design made for that edition and a compatible version; a Java tutorial’s villager setup may not apply to Bedrock.
- Check villager requirements for that edition. For Bedrock, verify beds, villager links, and workstation use. For Java, do not assume Bedrock’s village thresholds apply.
- Inspect the spawning area. Confirm the intended platform has valid solid surfaces and enough clearance, then look for other places golems could spawn within the relevant area.
- Search nearby terrain for a live golem. Check the ground and caves around the farm, not only the kill chamber.
- Review recent changes. If output stopped after moving or adding beds, villagers, workstations, or nearby village features, check whether those changes altered villager links or the farm’s village behavior.
What to check in a Bedrock iron farm
Meet the village thresholds
The community-maintained Village mechanics reference lists these Bedrock golem-spawning conditions: at least 20 beds, at least 10 villagers, every villager linked to a bed, and at least 75% of villagers having worked at a workstation during the previous in-game day. These are game-mechanic thresholds for Bedrock, not requirements to apply indiscriminately to Java farms.
Verify links and actual workstation use
Placing workstations nearby is not enough if villagers have not linked to or used them. Check that villagers can reach and claim their workstations, and that the needed number actually worked during the prior day. Mojang’s MCPE-186580 issue record states: “Villagers require to be linked to a workstation in order for the village to spawn an Iron Golem.” It documents Bedrock workstation links as relevant and describes a Java/Bedrock difference.

The issue page lists affected-version labels 1.21.23 Hotfix, 1.21.40.21 Preview, and 1.21.51 Hotfix; it was unresolved when researched. Those labels are version-specific issue history, not proof that every later Bedrock release has the same behavior. Check the issue’s current status and your game version before treating it as a diagnosis.
What to check in a Java iron farm
Use a Java-specific farm design and follow its stated villager behavior and layout. Mojang’s issue discussion notes that Java villagers have not needed professions to summon golems since snapshot 20w19a. Do not impose Bedrock’s 20-bed, 10-villager, and 75%-work checklist on a Java farm as universal rules; the editions use different spawning mechanics. Is the farm’s spawn area valid?
A working villager setup cannot produce farm output if golems have no valid place to spawn, or if they spawn somewhere the collection system misses. Inspect the full intended platform for solid spawn surfaces and sufficient vertical clearance. Then search nearby ground, caves, and other surfaces: the spawn area is defined around the village center, not just by the visible kill chamber. Follow a layout designed for your edition and version; the farming reference describes edition-specific spawning areas.
Could an existing golem be stopping output?
Look for a live golem outside the trap, including in nearby caves or terrain. A golem that spawned beyond the collection path can affect further spawning behavior in that farm design. The number of spawnable blocks and how long golems remain alive also affect output, so make sure the intended spawn platform directs them into the collection system and removes them promptly. Do not assume the farm is broken just because its kill chamber is empty.

What if the farm stopped after a change?
Review what changed immediately before output stopped: beds, villagers, workstations, or nearby village features. In Bedrock, changes can affect whether villagers remain linked to beds and workstations or whether the village qualifies. The cited mechanics references do not establish one universal distance at which every nearby bed, workstation, or village merges with a farm. Avoid applying a fixed exclusion radius without a design-specific source for your edition and version.

Rebuild only after identifying a mismatch or failed check. When evaluating a replacement design, confirm that it specifies the correct edition and supported version, states whether villagers must work, sleep, or respond to a threat, explains how it establishes the village center and spawn volume, and shows how it prevents outside spawning and clears golems. The general Minecraft.net iron golem article provides background, but it is not a technical spawning specification.
