An iron farm that produces nothing usually fails one of four checks: the summoning rules for your edition, the villager conditions, the spawn space around the village, or an existing golem that is using up the allowance. Start by confirming whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The two use different iron golem summoning rules, so a design built for one often fails in the other.
Start with your edition and version
Record three things before changing anything: the edition (Java or Bedrock), the game version, and the platform. Also note which farm design or tutorial you followed. The mechanics below come from a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial and a Mojang bug-tracker entry. Neither is a release-by-release rulebook, so if your version is recent, treat these thresholds as a starting point and test them in your own world.
Java Edition: villager summoning and spawn space
In Java Edition, villagers summon iron golems in two ways, according to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial:
- Gossip summoning: a group of five villagers, with at least one of them gossiping.
- Panic summoning: a group of three villagers that are panicking. Panic is triggered by a hostile mob such as a zombie or pillager. The tutorial characterizes zombies as the easier trigger to use.
The tutorial also states that Java villagers do not need a profession for this summoning. Do not diagnose a Java farm using Bedrock’s village thresholds, which are covered below.

Work through these checks in order:
- Count the villagers in the group. Confirm there are at least five for the gossip route or three for the panic route, and that the intended trigger is actually present. A panic design with no hostile mob nearby will never fire.
- Check for a recent golem. The tutorial describes suppression tied to a nearby existing golem. If a golem was just summoned, allow time for the attempt cycle to run again, and look for that golem elsewhere in the area.
- Inspect the spawn platform. The spawn block must be solid, with air or water above it. Non-solid blocks such as buttons or pressure plates in the space can obstruct spawning.
- Confirm the villagers can reach the spawn position. Villagers that are walled off from the platform or the group cannot gossip or panic together.
Bedrock Edition: village thresholds and links
Bedrock Edition uses a village-based system. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial lists the following conditions for iron golem generation in a Bedrock village. Check each one against your village, not just the farm room.
| Requirement | Threshold from the tutorial | What to check in your world |
|---|---|---|
| Beds | At least 20 | Count every bed the village uses, including beds in other rooms. |
| Villagers | At least 10 | Count villagers inside the village boundary, not just those near the farm. |
| Bed links | Every villager linked to a bed | Each villager needs a claimed bed. Unlinked villagers do not count. |
| Workstations | At least 75% of villagers worked at a workstation the previous day | Check that villagers have claimed workstations and actually used them. |
| Simulation distance | The village must be inside the player’s simulation distance | Stay within range while the farm runs. Golems will not generate in a village the game is not simulating. |
| Spawn volume | A valid spawn location in a 17×13×17 volume around the village center | Inspect the full volume, described below. |
A Mojang bug-tracker entry discusses the workstation-link requirement and a proposed change in how it behaves. That entry is an issue record, not confirmation that the change applies in every release. If your farm meets the table on paper but still fails, check the release notes for your exact version before assuming a bug.

Check the village center and the full spawn volume
For Bedrock, the spawn check is centered on the village center rather than on your farm platform. The tutorial says the center can be a bell or a bed pillow. The spawn volume extends 8 blocks horizontally in each direction and 6 blocks above and below that center. A farm can be correct while the volume still contains no valid spawn spot.
The tutorial also notes that good designs cluster beds, because the village center can shift as the village changes. If your beds are spread out, the effective center may move away from your farm.

Look for golems that already exist outside the farm
A village’s golem allowance is tied to its villager population on Bedrock. Golems that spawn in nearby caves, on roofs, or elsewhere inside the spawn volume can use up that allowance, so the farm’s collection area stays empty. In Java, a nearby existing golem can also suppress new summoning, as noted above.
Search the whole area around the village, including roofs, caves, and any ledges within the spawn volume. If you find extra golems, they are the likely reason for an empty collection area. Those golems can then be removed or relocated, and the farm should be retested afterward.

Do not rebuild from door-based instructions
Older village farming guides relied on doors and older village rules. The legacy Minecraft Wiki material describes that system as historical. Do not use door-based instructions to build or repair a current iron farm, because they will not reflect how golems spawn in current versions.

Yield figures are not comparable across these editions or farms. A rate only means something when the edition, version, design, simulation settings, and measurement method are all held constant. No such comparable rate was established in the sources used here.

What these sources establish, and what they do not
The thresholds above come from a community-maintained wiki tutorial, which may lag behind current releases. The Mojang bug-tracker entry is useful for understanding a reported behavior, but it does not settle how any given version behaves. No named statistic or official statement on iron farm output was found, so this article does not cite production rates.
Send the details for a precise diagnosis
If the farm still produces nothing after these checks, a precise diagnosis needs the following information:
- Edition (Java or Bedrock), exact game version, and platform
- The farm design or tutorial you followed
- Villager count, bed count, and how many villagers have claimed beds and workstations
- Your distance from the village while the farm runs, and your simulation distance setting
- Whether you see golems anywhere in the village, and where they appear
With those details, the most likely failed condition can be identified from the list above.
