To see how much space the update currently queued on your device requires, check the update screen; Epic says the required space is shown there.
Why can Fortnite updates differ in size?
Epic Games says Fortnite update sizes can vary across platforms and between players on the same platform. On PC, installation options are one documented reason. The size also depends on the specific release, so a friend’s figure—or a number from an older update—is not a reliable estimate for your install.

To compare two players’ figures, first make sure they mean the same thing. One number may describe the download, while another may describe the free space the device needs. Compare the platform and the particular release as well. Epic’s support guidance confirms that sizes can vary, but does not explain every patching or temporary-space detail.
How to check the space your queued update needs
- Open Fortnite’s update screen on the platform where you play.
- Queue the update and check the space requirement displayed there.
- Use that figure to assess the update currently queued on your device, rather than relying on a general estimate.
Epic says the required space appears on the update screen across platforms. This is the most useful immediate figure for your own install; the official material does not provide a current platform-by-platform size chart.

Why might a PC download be different?
Optional high-resolution textures
Epic’s PC installation guidance describes high-resolution textures as an optional component. In an article published April 30, 2021, Epic estimated that deselecting them could remove around 14 GB of high-resolution content, and that the game could be as low as 18 GB if all optional components were removed. These are historical estimates, not current download sizes or guarantees about today’s launcher options.
Performance Mode is a separate setting
Epic described PC Performance Mode as an opt-in setting that trades visual quality for lower memory use and a lighter CPU/GPU load. Its 2021 guidance said the mode was available in Battle Royale and Creative, while Save the World was unavailable when using it. That is historical feature information; check current Fortnite and launcher options for present availability. Performance Mode is not itself evidence that a particular update will download less.

Storage and performance are different issues
Epic’s 2021 advice for older machines said an SSD or at least 6 GB of RAM could help the game fit in memory and reduce hitches and stutters. That advice concerns performance, not patch size: an SSD does not, on this evidence, make Fortnite updates smaller.

It can. In its Fortnite v3.5 patch notes, Epic said Xbox One’s download would be larger than normal because of data-layout optimizations intended to improve load times and performance. The same notes said download and patch size were reduced for PC players who had only Battle Royale. This is a historical example of release- and platform-specific differences, not an explanation for every large update today.

What to check when your update looks unusually large
- Confirm the device and platform version you are comparing: PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or another supported platform may not have the same update size.
- On PC, check whether installation options such as high-resolution textures differ between installs; current launcher labels and availability may differ from Epic’s 2021 guidance.
- Compare the same Fortnite release, not a current queued update with a friend’s older download.
- Check whether each displayed number is the download size or the required free space.
- Use the update screen’s displayed requirement for the install in front of you. The official guidance does not establish a universal current size or explain every cause of a particular large download.
