Her pointed ears make her look elf-like, and a Nintendo guide says Hylian ears are “said to be able to hear the voices of the gods.”
Is Zelda an elf?
No. Nintendo’s character profile identifies Zelda as Hylian. “Elf” is a visual comparison, not the name Nintendo gives her people.
Why does Zelda have pointed ears?
Nintendo’s A Link to the Past Player’s Guide explains the feature this way: “The long, pointed ears of the Hylian people are said to be able to hear the voices of the gods.” The phrase “said to” presents this as lore or belief; it does not establish a proven ability or explain a biological mechanism.
Does this apply to every Zelda?
Zelda is a name shared by often-distinct individuals, with different lives and memories. The series’ Zelda characters are generally identified as Hylian, but their stories and details can vary from game to game.

What should you call her?
Use “Hylian” for Zelda’s in-universe identity. “Elf-like” works when describing her appearance, but it is not Nintendo’s term for her people.
