There is no confirmed public explanation for why Chrono Trigger has not been released on Nintendo Switch. The Square Enix pages checked list the game for Steam and mobile devices, but not Switch; theories about licensing, technical issues, cost, or a planned remake remain speculation.
What platforms does Square Enix list?
Square Enix’s Japanese Chrono Trigger site presents a Steam version and does not list Switch. The publisher’s North American support center labels the game “CHRONO TRIGGER [iOS/Android/Steam]” and lists Steam support topics, again without Switch. The Japanese product page notes that some information relates to older versions, so it should not be treated as a complete, always-current platform database.
Square Enix’s mobile information page identifies the smartphone release as iOS and Android. It gives release dates of 9 December 2011 for iPhone and iPod touch and 22 December 2011 for Android. The mobile version includes features added in the Nintendo DS edition. These details show that the game has appeared in multiple editions, but they do not explain the absence of a Switch version.
Why isn’t it on Switch?
The reason has not been established in the public sources cited here. No official explanation was found addressing licensing, porting costs, technical constraints, sales forecasts, scheduling, Nintendo Switch Online, or another cause. Those may be theories, but presenting any one of them as Square Enix’s reason would go beyond the available evidence.

Does Chrono Cross on Switch tell us anything?
No. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is a separate game that Square Enix released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. In a publisher interview dated 7 April 2022, producer Koichiro Sakamoto said there were no plans at that time for a brand-new Chrono series entry. That was a time-bound comment about a new entry, not an explanation of Chrono Trigger’s availability or a statement about a Switch port.
Is a remake or Switch release confirmed?
A Nintendo Life report published 9 May 2025 and updated 18 May 2025 quoted Square Enix’s response to remake rumors: “A Chrono Trigger remake has not been announced, and at the very least, Horii is not even considering it.” That statement addressed a remake rumor at that time. It does not confirm or rule out a Switch port, and it is not a release roadmap.

How can you play it now?
The official pages cited above identify Steam and mobile editions, not a Switch edition. If you specifically want to play on a television or Nintendo handheld console, the available platform information does not establish a Switch-compatible release. The mobile page documents iOS and Android versions, while Square Enix’s game page and support listing identify Steam. These sources do not provide enough detail for a reliable comparison of controls, performance, features, or prices.
