Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA game update can take ages because the download is slow, the platform’s content server or route is congested, or the device is still installing the files. Start by checking where progress is stopping: a slow transfer calls for connection and server checks, while a download that has finished but is still processing may point to storage or installation. The right fix depends on your platform; a fast internet plan alone does not guarantee a fast game update.
First, work out what is actually taking time
Look at the update’s status and rate rather than relying only on the overall progress bar. A transfer that has not started, one that moves intermittently, a consistently low download rate, and an update that is installing after the download completes are different problems.
- No progress or intermittent progress: Check that the device is online and whether software is active that may pause downloads.
- Low download rate: Test the platform’s internet connection. If the problem is limited to one platform or game, a content server or route may be involved.
- Download complete, but update still processing: Check for installation or storage issues, especially on Steam.
- More than one device or download affected: Compare behavior across your devices and network. This can help identify whether the issue is limited to a game, platform, or connection, but does not by itself prove the cause.
There is no universal free-space threshold or expected update time established by the platform guidance cited here. File size, connection, platform, and installation conditions differ.
Why a game update can be slow even with fast internet
Your connection or the platform’s route may be the bottleneck
Your internet plan describes your connection to your provider; it does not guarantee the rate you will get from a particular game platform’s content server. Steam’s download guidance recommends comparing Steam’s download behavior with your internet connection, and its support pages identify regional content-server issues as one possible cause. A slow Steam download alone does not establish that the selected region is overloaded or that your home connection is at fault. The game or console may pause the download
Nintendo notes that some Nintendo Switch software pauses downloads while it is being played. If a Switch download appears stuck, save your progress and close the running software before checking again. Downloading and installing are not the same stage
On Steam, an update that has finished downloading may still take time to install. Steam’s installation guidance points to drive load or corruption as possible issues and suggests trying another drive when troubleshooting installation problems. This is a diagnostic option, not proof that every slow update is caused by a drive. Steam: Update & Installation Issues

Try these low-risk checks first
- Confirm the device is online. Use the connection test or network status check available on your platform. On PlayStation, use the console’s internet connection test as an early troubleshooting step.
- Close software that could pause downloads. On Switch, save and close the active software, then check the download again.
- Restart if progress remains stuck. PlayStation includes a console restart in its early troubleshooting guidance. Nintendo also recommends restarting when a Switch download still will not progress after its initial checks.
- If the download rate is low on Steam, check its download region. A different region may help if the selected content server is having trouble, but changing it is a test—not a guaranteed fix.
- If Steam has finished downloading but is slow to install, investigate the drive. Check whether the installed drive is under heavy load or may have an issue; Steam suggests testing another drive for installation troubleshooting.
On PlayStation, make sure the console’s system software is current when troubleshooting an update. Reinstalling the game and using Safe Mode cache/database options appear later in PlayStation’s troubleshooting sequence, so reserve those more disruptive steps for cases that persist after connection checks and a restart. Use automatic updates to avoid waiting at launch time
PlayStation consoles can download updates automatically under the relevant settings, including in rest mode when the console is configured to stay connected to the internet. This can move the wait to a time when you are not ready to play; it does not make the connection or download itself faster. Some updates may still require approval.

Do not assume a new router, wired accessory, or replacement drive is necessary just because one game update is slow. First identify whether the issue is a low download rate, a platform-specific server problem, a pause caused by active software, or a slow installation. The cited platform guidance supports built-in checks and settings, not a universal hardware purchase or a promised fix.
