If your Kinect sensor will not register you on Just Dance, start by confirming the exact game edition and console. Kinect support is tied to a specific title and platform, not to the Just Dance franchise as a whole. Ubisoft’s documented example is Just Dance 2022 on Xbox One, where Xbox Kinect is listed as a supported peripheral. That listing confirms one combination. It does not prove that Kinect works with every Just Dance release, every Xbox model, or every sensor and cable setup, and Ubisoft itself says Xbox stopped supporting Kinect in late 2021.
Step 1: Confirm the game edition and console
Before you troubleshoot the sensor, write down two things: the full title and year printed on the game (for example, Just Dance 2022) and the exact console model (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, or another model). Compare them with Ubisoft’s peripheral listing. If your combination is not the one Ubisoft documents, a sensor fault is not the only explanation, and no troubleshooting step will make an unsupported pairing work.

- Note the game title and year from the disc, the game’s store page, or the Just Dance menu.
- Note the console model. Xbox One variants are not all identical in how they handle peripherals, so record the model rather than just “Xbox.”
- Open Ubisoft’s supported peripherals page for the matching game (see the table below) and check whether Kinect is listed for that platform.
- If your edition is not listed for Kinect, stop there. Use the alternatives described later in this article rather than replacing the sensor.
What Ubisoft’s peripheral listing actually covers
Ubisoft’s help article for Just Dance 2022 lists several input options. Each one has a different role, and they should not be read as interchangeable. The table below summarises what that listing states.
| Peripheral listed | Game and platform named | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Kinect | Just Dance 2022, Xbox One | Listed as a supported peripheral |
| Just Dance 2016-22 Controller App | Just Dance 2022 listing | Listed as a supported peripheral |
| Xbox One controller | Just Dance 2022 listing | Identified as a menu-navigation device |
The Xbox One controller entry is the one most players overlook. It is labelled for menus, not for dancing, so a controller that navigates the game correctly is not evidence that the sensor path works. Source: Ubisoft Help, Supported peripherals for Just Dance 2022.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires power adapter for Xbox One S and X models (sold separately)
- Put down the controller and play Xbox One games using just your body, voice, and gestures. Command your TV and even make Skype calls in HD.
- Play games where you are the controller, Be recognized and signed-in automatically
- Be recognized and signed-in automatically you can also call friends and family with Skype in HD
- Broadcast gameplay live with picture-in-picture
This listing is also the only official Kinect compatibility example available for this topic. Ubisoft’s page does not say whether later Just Dance releases on Xbox One carry Kinect support, so do not assume a newer edition inherits it.
Why a listed combination can still fail
A compatibility listing describes what the publisher supports. It does not guarantee that a particular sensor will be recognised on a particular day. Two facts make the Kinect case harder than a typical peripheral problem.
Rank #2
- Command your Xbox and TV with your voice (examples include "Xbox On", "Xbox Watch TV", "Xbox Go to Amazon Instant Video", and more).
- Broadcast gameplay live with picture-in-picture using the Twitch Xbox One app.
- Make Skype calls in HD on your TV using the Kinect.
- Play games where you are the controller and work out smarter with Xbox Fitness.
- Compatible with Xbox One S with Adapter: Kinect for Xbox One is compatible with Xbox One S via the Xbox Kinect Adapter for USB.
First, Ubisoft’s Just Dance team wrote in its October 2025 article on the Camera Controller feature: “In late 2021, Xbox discontinued the support for Kinect – that’s when we started thinking about a new system using smartphone cameras.” The statement comes from Apolline Wasik and Léo Gammel of Ubisoft Paris’s Just Dance team, and it is the publisher’s own account of why Kinect was replaced. Source: Ubisoft, Revolutionising motion gaming: the Camera Controller feature, October 28, 2025.
Second, the Just Dance 2022 listing predates that statement. Read it as a record of what was supported for that game, not as a current assurance that a sensor connected to a current console will work.
Rank #3
- Does not come with the power cable needed for the original Xbox 360
Troubleshooting when your edition and console are confirmed
If the game and console combination is one Ubisoft lists for Kinect, work through the checks below in order. Ubisoft’s peripheral page does not provide a detailed hardware repair procedure, so the steps focus on what you can verify rather than on fixes the publisher has not documented.
Check whether the console recognises the sensor
- Confirm that the sensor is connected to the console using the connection your console model requires, and that it has power.
- Check the console’s own accessory or device settings to see whether the sensor appears. If the console does not list it, the game cannot use it, and the fault sits between the console and the sensor.
- Do not rely on a controller working as proof: the controller entry is for menus, so a working controller says nothing about the sensor.
Check the peripheral itself
- Ubisoft advises contacting the peripheral manufacturer for problems with the peripheral. Use the manufacturer’s support channel for hardware faults, including cable or sensor replacement questions.
- Keep the console model and the Just Dance title and year ready when you contact either party. These are the two details support teams will ask for first.
Contact support for the game and console
- If the console recognises the sensor and the game still does not, contact Ubisoft support for the specific title and platform.
- Describe the edition, the console model, and whether the console lists the sensor. Those three facts narrow the problem faster than a general description of symptoms.
Using a phone instead: the Camera Controller option
Ubisoft’s newer motion option uses a smartphone camera rather than a dedicated sensor. It is a different system with its own compatibility rules, so the Kinect checks above do not transfer to it.
Rank #4
- Easily hook up with friends with Video Kinect, no headset required.
- Sign into your profile by just stepping in front of the sensor
- Kinect games give you the freedom to jump, duck, and spin your way through a unique adventure.
- Kinect uses cutting-edge technology to provide a whole new way to play

Just Dance 2026: out of beta
Ubisoft says Camera Controller was available in beta in Just Dance 2025 and officially launched with Just Dance 2026. The Version 26.0.0 patch notes state that Camera Controller is out of beta and considered stable for regular use. Source: Ubisoft, Version 26.0.0 – Patch Notes.
Song coverage is the limiting factor. The patch notes list choreography from Just Dance 2025 and Just Dance 2026 as compatible. They also say other songs might work on Just Dance+ or on earlier editions, but they do not guarantee it. If the song you want is from an older release, check that song’s status in the game before assuming it will work with Camera Controller.

Which phone you need
The sources available for this article do not name any supported phone model. Check the current official app requirements before you rely on a phone. Do not assume that a phone which works with another Ubisoft app will work with Camera Controller.
The 2015 Controller App: historical context only
Ubisoft’s June 15, 2015 announcement of Just Dance 2016 described the Just Dance Controller App as letting smartphones control the game on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U without extra peripherals or console cameras. That is historical platform information. It does not describe the current app, so use the current app listing and your game’s support page for requirements. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Before you buy anything
Verify the title, year, and console before you purchase a replacement sensor, an adapter, a copy of the game, or a phone. Buying a game does not repair a sensor that the console does not recognise, and no source here shows that a new sensor fixes a recognition fault. The sensible order is to confirm compatibility, check the console, and contact the relevant support channel before spending money.
Limits of this guidance: Ubisoft’s documentation confirms one Kinect combination and describes Camera Controller at a general level. It does not provide console-specific Kinect setup steps, and the public information reviewed here does not cover every Xbox model or sensor revision.
