A Realm shows as outdated when your installed Minecraft doesn’t match the version that Realm supports. In most cases the fix is on your side: update the game on the device you’re joining from, make sure you’re on the same edition as the Realm, and avoid Preview or snapshot builds for a normal Realm. If the version is current and you still can’t connect, check that the Realm is open and that its owner has an active Realms subscription.
What the outdated warning actually means
Realms is a hosted service, so the game version has to line up with what the Realm is running. The warning is a mismatch message, not a sign that the Realm is broken. It usually appears on the joining device, which means the device is behind, or running a build the Realm does not accept.

Minecraft’s own troubleshooting material treats outdated versions as one of the most common causes of multiplayer problems. That is the first thing to rule out, and it is the only cause the official help pages connect directly to a version warning.
Step 1: Confirm the edition matches the Realm
Before updating anything, check which edition the Realm runs. Bedrock players join Bedrock games and Realms, and Java players join Java-hosted games. A Java client cannot join a Bedrock Realm, and a Bedrock client cannot join a Java server or Realm, so a mismatch here can look like an outdated-version problem even when both sides are current.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Also confirm which edition your friends are using. Everyone who joins the Realm has to be on the matching edition.
Step 2: Update the game on the joining device
Update Minecraft on the device that is trying to connect. The method depends on the platform:
- Bedrock on Windows, Xbox, mobile, or consoles: enable automatic updates in the platform’s store settings, or check for an update manually in the store that installed the game.
- Java Edition: open the Minecraft Launcher and make sure the profile you launch uses the latest release.
After updating, fully close Minecraft and start it again before retrying. A game that is still running an older build in memory will keep showing the warning.

Step 3: Remove Preview and snapshot builds from the picture
Preview and snapshot builds are pre-release versions. A normal Realm does not accept them, so a player who launches a Preview profile or a snapshot can get an outdated or mismatched message even though their game appears up to date.
In the Java launcher, check that the selected profile is the latest release rather than a snapshot or a custom profile pointed at an older version. On Bedrock, make sure you have not installed the Preview app alongside the release version and are launching the release one.
Preview/Beta Realms are a different case. Those Realms are open only to members running the Preview or Beta software, so the reverse rule applies there.

Step 4: Make sure every player is current
A Realm can only be joined by players on a version it supports, so a player who has not updated can be the one who gets the warning. Ask the Realm owner and every other member to update, then have each person retry. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting specifically advises confirming that the other player has updated, not only the person who is reporting the problem.
Step 5: Check the Realm’s access state
If every device is current, edition and channel match, and you still cannot connect, move to the Realm’s status. These checks are separate from the version warning, and the official help pages do not list them as the cause of an outdated message. They matter because a connection can fail for them even when the version is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Realm is open: the Realm must be open for players to join. Confirm this in the Realm settings on the owner’s side.
- Active subscription: the owner needs an active Realms subscription. A lapsed subscription can stop the Realm from working for everyone.
- Platform online-play access (consoles): on consoles, verify any platform subscription that online play requires on that console account.
Step 6: Try a Realm restart, with the right expectations
The Realm owner can close and reopen the Realm. Minecraft’s connection troubleshooting suggests this for general connection problems. It is a reasonable thing to try once the earlier steps are done, but the help pages do not say that it changes the Realm’s version, and it should not be treated as a manual server update.

If the warning remains after a current game, matching edition, correct channel, open Realm, and active subscription, the problem is probably on Minecraft’s side. Check the official service status and contact Minecraft support with the exact warning text, your edition and version, the device, and the Realm’s edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the official guidance does not cover
Minecraft’s Help pages do not publish a schedule for Realm server software updates, and they do not say how long an update takes to roll out. They also do not say whether a particular warning reflects a live incident. Do not assume a fixed wait time, and do not assume an outage without checking current service status.
The owner also cannot force a server-side version update from the Realm settings, based on the official documentation. Once your side is correct, the remaining variable is Minecraft’s own service, and only Minecraft can change that.

No official statistic is published on how often Realms show outdated warnings or how long mismatches last, so this article does not offer one.
Quick checklist
- Realm and joining device use the same edition (Bedrock or Java)
- The game on your device is updated and fully restarted
- Java profile is set to the latest release; no Preview or snapshot is in use
- Every player who joins has updated
- The Realm is open and the owner’s subscription is active
- Console online-play requirements are met on the account
- Official service status has been checked before contacting support
