Epic Games says Bluetooth microphone input is not officially supported on Switch, and for in-game voice chat the microphone must be connected by cable through the Switch audio jack. If that is already true for your setup, the next suspects are Fortnite’s voice settings and channel, account restrictions, and a temporary service problem. Work through the sections below in that order.
Check the connection type first
Epic’s support article on Bluetooth microphones is explicit:
“Bluetooth microphone input is not officially supported on the Nintendo Switch.” It continues: “To be able to use a microphone in the in-game voice chat, your headphones/microphone will need to be connected to the Nintendo Switch with a cable via the audio jack.” (Epic Games Player Support, Bluetooth microphone input on Nintendo Switch)
This means a Bluetooth headset can play game audio and still fail to carry your voice to teammates. If your headset pairs over Bluetooth, the fix is a wired microphone plugged into the Switch’s audio jack, or a USB option where Epic suggests one (covered below).

Epic’s wording on docked use is troubleshooting guidance, not a promise that any particular adapter or headset will work. Check the table’s last row against the maker’s compatibility information before buying anything.
Check the Fortnite voice settings and channel
If the connection is right and teammates still can’t hear you, open the in-game menu, select Settings, then Audio, and review the voice-chat options. Epic’s voice-chat settings article covers the same menu.

Check which channel you are speaking into. Fortnite separates Party chat from Game chat, and talking in the wrong one makes it look as if your microphone is broken, even though it works. Epic also states that Party Chat settings apply to your whole account, so a change you make on one device carries over to others. Epic’s guide to managing party, voice chat, and text chat options explains how the channels work.
Check account restrictions
Account settings can block voice chat even when the headset is connected correctly. Two cases come up in Epic’s guidance:

- Cabined accounts. Epic says a cabined account cannot use voice or text chat until the parent or guardian completes the consent process.
- Voice Chat set to “Nobody.” This setting disables voice chat entirely, regardless of hardware.
Which options a player can select depends on account age and parental settings, and parental controls can prevent changes to chat settings. If you are not the account holder, ask the parent or guardian to review the settings. Epic’s parental controls and voice-chat troubleshooting page sets out the steps.

An outage on Epic’s side can stop voice chat from working for everyone, so check Epic’s server-status page and known-issues resources before changing anything on your console. If others in your group report the same symptom at the same time, waiting is the sensible option.

Epic’s voice-chat troubleshooting article also lists a Switch network step: changing the DNS setting to Google’s public DNS and retrying. Treat this as an optional test, not a proven fix. Epic does not promise it will solve the problem. Leave other network settings alone unless Epic’s official instructions or your network administrator tell you to change them.
Know when to contact Epic
If you have a wired microphone, the correct channel, no account restriction, no service outage, and the voice problem persists, contact Epic Games Player Support. Nintendo’s own support page on headset and microphone problems in Fortnite directs questions about in-game features such as voice chat to Epic Games.
Epic’s help pages do not display a publication date, and the guidance above reflects the wording found in October 2026. Because product support articles change, confirm the current text on the linked pages before relying on a specific step.
Epic’s guidance does not measure how often Fortnite microphone problems occur on Switch, so no failure rate can be cited. The steps above are product-support instructions, and following them does not guarantee that voice chat will work on every headset or console setup.
