Start by forcing the console off: hold the POWER button for at least 20 seconds, then restart it. If it still cannot get past the Nintendo logo, Nintendo’s guidance is to have the console serviced. A logo freeze does not identify one specific cause, so try the safe recovery steps below without assuming the battery or a particular component is at fault.
1. Force the Switch to shut down
When the screen is frozen, hold POWER for at least 20 seconds. Wait briefly, then press POWER again to start the console. This forced shutdown is Nintendo’s first step for a frozen system; it is different from putting the console to sleep.
If the Switch starts normally, make sure any game or system update can finish before interrupting power again. If it returns to the logo and freezes, continue with the checks below.
2. Remove game and microSD cards while it is off
After forcing the console off, remove any game card and microSD card, then turn the system on again. Nintendo advises removing these cards when troubleshooting a frozen console. Do not remove a game card while software is suspended; remove it from the HOME Menu or when the console is powered off.

Nintendo’s freeze instructions include separate handling for Switch Lite. Follow the applicable directions in Nintendo’s freeze troubleshooting guide for your model.
3. Check charging only if power symptoms are also present
A charging check is relevant if the console also seems to have no power, a blank screen, or trouble waking. It is not evidence by itself that the AC adapter caused a logo freeze.

- Disconnect the AC adapter from both the console and the wall outlet for 30 seconds.
- With the console disconnected, hold POWER for 20 seconds.
- Reconnect the adapter and, if the battery may be nearly depleted, leave the system charging for 15–30 minutes before trying to start it again.
Nintendo identifies adapter model HAC-002 and recommends an undamaged adapter; damaged or non-licensed adapters can cause compatibility problems. Switch Lite does not work with the Switch dock. See Nintendo’s power and charging guidance for the relevant checks.
4. Update the system if you can reach the menus
If the console gets past the logo and reaches HOME, connect to the internet and open System Settings > System > System Update. Let an update complete rather than powering the system off during installation.

If you cannot perform a normal system update, Nintendo recommends trying Update System in Maintenance Mode. The console must be fully powered off to enter that mode; it cannot be opened while the system is on or asleep.
5. Use Maintenance Mode cautiously
Enter Maintenance Mode
- Force the console off, then confirm it is fully powered down.
- Press and hold both volume buttons, then press POWER.
- Keep holding both volume buttons until the Maintenance Mode menu appears.
If available, try Update System first. If the update cannot be completed or does not resolve the problem, Maintenance Mode also offers Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.

Understand the initialization trade-off
This option preserves save data, screenshots, and user information, but software stored on the microSD card will no longer be usable from that card. You can redownload that software using the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Read the on-screen warning before confirming; this is an initialization step, not a guaranteed fix for a hardware problem.

Nintendo’s logo-specific guidance is direct: if the console cannot proceed past the Nintendo Logo screen, it needs service. Stop troubleshooting at that point and use Nintendo’s Error Code: 2001-0114 support page for service guidance. Repeating restarts or buying another accessory is not a proven remedy for a system that remains stuck at the logo.
