A menu response shows the controller is sending at least some input, but it does not rule out a game-specific setting, a game issue, or a controller fault. PlayStation does not identify one universal cause for this symptom, so use the checks below to narrow it down before trying disruptive fixes.
Find out whether the problem is limited to one game
- Close the affected game and reopen it, then test the controller in another game if one is available.
- If possible, try a second controller in the affected game.
- Note whether the issue occurs in one game, several games, or both games and the PS5 interface.
If only one title is affected, start with that game’s controls and support options. If several titles are affected, check the PS5 controller settings and connection next. These comparisons help narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a particular component is at fault.
Check the affected game’s input settings
Look in the game’s settings for controller or input options. Depending on the title, check its control layout or preset, player assignment, and accessibility features. Menus and available options vary by game; there is no single PS5-wide control setting that covers every title.
If you restore the game’s default control layout, be aware that custom mappings may be replaced. For a game-specific fault that remains after checking its settings, consult that game’s official support. PlayStation also directs users to individual games for information about their accessibility features (PlayStation 5 Support).

Check PS5 controller settings and software
On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and review the available DualSense settings. To check the controller’s device software, go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. PlayStation says controller updates are also added when PS5 system software is updated; it documents the manual selection path as well (How to connect a DualSense wireless controller). Menu labels can vary with system software or region.
Reconnect the controller over USB
A USB connection can pair a DualSense controller with the PS5 or reconnect it. Connect the controller to the console and press the PS button. If you need a cable and still have the one supplied with your console or controller, try it first. For the connection and charging troubleshooting steps PlayStation describes, use a charge-and-sync or charging-and-data cable; a charge-only cable is not suitable (PlayStation’s DualSense connection guidance).

Reset the DualSense if the basic checks do not help
PlayStation’s reset instructions call for turning off the PS5, pressing the small reset button on the back of the DualSense with a pin or similar tool, reconnecting the controller to the console by USB, and pressing the PS button. Follow the full sequence and timing on PlayStation’s regional support page rather than relying on an abbreviated reset description: Controllers Support. A reset can address controller-state or pairing problems, but it does not establish why one game might ignore input or guarantee a fix.

- One game only: If a second controller also fails in that title, contact the game’s official support after checking its input settings.
- Multiple games or persistent controller trouble: If the issue remains after the update, USB reconnection, and reset steps, use PlayStation’s PS5 support to find the appropriate repair route.
Do not start with a console reset or system-software reinstallation for an in-game-only input problem. PlayStation warns that reinstalling PS5 system software deletes console data, making it a high-disruption step rather than a routine controller fix (PlayStation 5 Support).
