A red light means different things depending on which accessory you have and what happened just before it blinked. On the original Pokémon GO Plus, it can mean you moved out of range of a PokéStop or Gym before pressing the button, or that a Pokémon escaped after a catch attempt. On Pokémon GO Plus +, blinking red on the battery-level indicator means low battery.
First, identify which Pokémon GO accessory you have
The original accessory is named Pokémon GO Plus; the newer model is Pokémon GO Plus +. Their red indicators do not mean the same thing. On the Plus +, the low-battery message applies specifically to the small LED used to check battery level—not automatically to every red light or gameplay signal.
What a red light means on the original Pokémon GO Plus
| What happened just before the light | What the red indicator means |
|---|---|
| You pressed the Main Button for a nearby PokéStop or Gym after moving too far away. | Niantic says the device vibrates and flashes red because you were too far from the stop before pressing the button. Niantic: Official Bluetooth Devices |
| You tried to catch a Pokémon. | If it breaks out and runs away, the device vibrates and pulses red. This means the Pokémon escaped; it does not, by itself, show that the accessory malfunctioned. Niantic: Official Bluetooth Devices |
If it happened at a PokéStop or Gym
Move back within range before pressing the Main Button. The red flash described by Niantic is tied to having moved too far away before the press.
If it happened after a catch attempt
The Pokémon escaped. The accessory makes one catch attempt and cannot use Berries, so a red pulse is a gameplay outcome rather than a battery warning. Check the in-game Journal if you want to review the encounter.

What blinking red means on Pokémon GO Plus +
Pokémon Support labels the Plus + battery-level indicator “Blinking red: Low.” This is a low-charge indication for that model’s battery-check LED. Pokémon Support: Pokémon GO Plus + Technical FAQs
What to do if the light does not match these situations
The official descriptions establish these specific red-light contexts, but do not document every possible blink pattern or hardware fault. If your light appears in another situation, do not diagnose the problem from color alone. Note the exact model, where the light appears, and what happened immediately beforehand.

If the accessory will not connect or keeps having trouble
- In Pokémon GO, open the accessory devices controls and remove or eject the accessory connection.
- Pair or connect the accessory again.
Niantic says removing the connection and reconnecting resolves accessory difficulties in most cases. If the problem persists, its troubleshooting guidance also suggests leaving and reopening the accessory menu, restarting or reinstalling the app, restarting the phone, clearing the phone’s connected-device list, or factory-resetting the accessory. Follow the options applicable to your device in Niantic: Troubleshooting Official Bluetooth Devices.
If the original Pokémon GO Plus has a separate power problem
The original Pokémon GO Plus uses one replaceable CR2032 coin-type battery. Replacing it may help with an independent power issue, but the documented red PokéStop and catch signals alone are not evidence that the battery needs replacing. Pokémon Support: Pokémon GO Plus Frequently Asked Questions
