In role-playing games, it means putting most of a character’s build points into the abilities that matter for a chosen role, and spending little on everything else. The name explains the idea clearly. What no available source establishes is who coined the term or exactly when.
What the name is built from
“Min-max” is a clipped blend of “minimize” and “maximize.” The two words describe one trade-off: reduce investment in some traits so that others can receive more. A gaming terminology reference on Writing-Games.org explains the word this way, tying the minimize/maximize pairing directly to character-building in RPGs.
What min-maxing means in role-playing games
Dictionary.com defines the gaming verb as assigning all or nearly all skill points to the abilities essential to a character’s success in a specified role, rather than distributing points evenly. Searches for “minmax” or “min/maxing” point to the same meaning.
The logic applies wherever a game lets you spend a fixed pool of points on stats or skills. That includes tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons and the video RPGs that use similar attribute and skill screens.

A worked illustration
Suppose a character creation screen gives you a fixed pool of points to split among six attributes. A melee-focused build might send almost the whole pool into strength and constitution, leaving intelligence and charisma low. The character becomes strong at its intended job and noticeably weaker outside it. That is the trade-off the name describes.
What the term does not promise
- It does not mean every weakness disappears. The basic logic is to concentrate effectiveness in selected areas, which usually leaves other areas underdeveloped.
- It does not describe a single correct build. It describes a goal-driven choice: the “useful” traits are only defined relative to the role or objective you pick.
How it differs from minimax
The term is often confused with “minimax,” a concept from decision theory. The two share a root in similar wording but address different problems.

The community discussion is useful for showing how players explain the difference. It does not establish whether one term directly gave rise to the other, so the connection between them should not be treated as settled history.
What the origin evidence does and does not show
- Dictionary dating. Dictionary.com lists “min-max” as first recorded in 2005–10. That is the period the dictionary records for the term, not proof of when anyone first used or coined it.
- No confirmed coiner. None of the sources gathered identifies a first coiner, an exact origin date, or a direct derivation from the game-theory concept.
- Unverified older claim. One search result asserted that an older D&D publication used the term. The passage was not verified, so it should not be cited as the first use unless the original book is checked.
- No usage statistics. No named statistic about how widely the term is used was found.
The D&D reference, if you want to explore builds
The official D&D Player’s Handbook page presents the book as a character-creation resource and lists a “Creating a Character” chapter. Readers who want to study build theory in depth may find it useful, but understanding the name does not require buying it. The publisher’s page is the place to confirm which edition is current and how the book is currently sold.

In short, the name comes from the two halves of a trade-off, and the RPG meaning follows directly from it. The origin story beyond the 2005–10 dictionary record remains unconfirmed.
