A solid blue light on a PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 is not automatically an error. On PS4, blue normally identifies the first connected controller as Player 1; additional controllers use red, green, and pink. If the buttons do nothing, the likely problem is pairing or communication—not the color itself.
Reconnect the controller with a data-capable USB cable and press the PS button. If that fails, reset the controller and pair it again using the steps below.

What the blue light means
The DUALSHOCK 4 light bar uses colors to identify player assignments. A blue light generally means that the controller is assigned to the first player. It does not serve as an official error code or reliable battery indicator.
To check the battery, hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu. The battery icon shows the charge level; while charging, the icon blinks. Sony says a fully depleted controller takes approximately two hours to charge. A controller may charge successfully without being paired to the PS4.

In other words, “blue but not working” usually means the controller has power or a player assignment, but the console is not accepting its input.
Try the normal pairing procedure first
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the controller directly to the console with the official USB cable, or another cable that supports data as well as charging.
- Press the PS button.
The light bar should blink during connection and then show the player indicator. Once the controller is paired and sufficiently charged, you can disconnect the cable and use it wirelessly. Sony’s pairing instructions are available in its DUALSHOCK 4 wireless troubleshooting guide.

If nothing happens, try both the front and rear USB ports on the PS4. A charge-only cable can power the controller but cannot complete the data connection required for pairing.

Reset and re-pair the controller
If the controller remains blue and still does not respond, use Sony’s official reset procedure:

- Turn off and unplug the PS4.
- Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller, near the L2 button.
- Insert a small, unfolded paper clip or similar tool and hold the recessed button for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with the USB cable.
- Plug the cable into a front or rear PS4 USB port.
- Press the PS button.
Sony’s general accessories page describes the reset press as roughly three to five seconds, but its dedicated troubleshooting page specifies at least five seconds. Use the stricter five-second instruction. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 reset instructions.
Do not pair it from the Bluetooth Devices menu
A DUALSHOCK 4 is paired to a PS4 through USB. You do not normally pair it by selecting the controller in Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices.

You can inspect that menu for paired or nearby Bluetooth devices, but it is not the standard controller-pairing route. If an unnecessary device is interfering with your setup, select it, press the OPTIONS button, and choose Forget Device. The relevant PS4 guide is Sony’s Bluetooth Devices documentation.
Check the controller settings after it reconnects
Once you can navigate the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Controllers. The available options include:

Communication Method is not available on every DUALSHOCK 4. Sony says it appears only when a CUH-ZCT2-series controller is connected to the PS4 with a USB cable. On supported controllers, it lets you choose Bluetooth or a wired USB connection. If you do not see the option, that does not by itself indicate a fault. See Sony’s PS4 controller settings guide.
What the symptoms suggest

Remember that one controller pairs with one console at a time
A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one console at a time. If you used it with a different PS4, it must be paired again with this one through USB. The PS4 supports up to four controllers simultaneously, with each controller receiving its own player color.
Do not use the DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor as a PS4 fix
The DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor cannot be used to connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to a PS4 system. It was designed for supported non-PS4 devices, so buying or plugging in that adaptor will not provide a PS4 pairing workaround. Sony documents this limitation in the adaptor instruction manual.

If the controller still will not respond after a proper reset, a known data-capable USB cable, multiple PS4 USB ports, and another USB pairing attempt, the blue light alone cannot identify the failed component. Possible causes include a worn cable, a damaged USB port, a battery problem, or a controller hardware fault, but the color does not distinguish between them.
Sony’s current DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting guidance directs users to PlayStation Repairs when resetting and re-pairing do not solve the problem. Sony does not publish a separate current “blue-light error code” for the DUALSHOCK 4.
