Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your RIG headset plays sound but its microphone is not working on your PC, first check the physical mute and connection, then run Windows’ microphone test. That test tells you whether to troubleshoot the headset and Windows or focus on the app that cannot hear you. RIG models use different controls and connections, so the right fix depends on the exact model and whether it connects by 3.5 mm, USB, a wireless receiver, or Bluetooth.
Run the Windows microphone test first
On Windows 11, connect the headset, then open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the RIG microphone, open its properties, and choose Start test. Speak normally, select Stop test, then choose Play to hear the recording. If needed, raise Input volume. Microsoft documents this test at How to set up and test microphones in Windows.
- The RIG microphone is not listed: Check the jack, cable, USB port or receiver, then device detection and drivers.
- It is listed, but the test has no signal: Check physical mute, boom insertion and orientation, input volume, privacy access, and connection.
- The test records your voice, but an app does not: The headset and Windows input path are working; check that app’s microphone selection, mute, and voice settings.
- It works on another device but not this PC: Investigate the PC’s jack, splitter, USB port, drivers, Windows input selection, and app setup.
- It fails on multiple compatible devices: A boom, cable, microphone, receiver, or headset fault is more likely than a Windows setting.
Hearing game audio proves only that the playback path works; it does not confirm that the PC can receive microphone audio.
Check the model, mute control, and microphone boom
Identify the model and platform edition before changing software or buying an adapter. RIG has wired analog, USB, Bluetooth, and wireless-receiver headsets, and compatibility and controls vary. The RIG product site and the headset’s product guide can help identify the connection and supported software.

- Flip-to-mute boom: On supported models, move the boom fully up and then fully down to restore the unmuted position. RIG 900 guidance specifically recommends this movement; it is not a universal control for every RIG headset. See Nacon’s microphone troubleshooting guidance.
- Mute button or inline control: Check that the microphone mute switch is off. Look for a mute indicator if your model has one.
- Removable boom: Unplug and firmly reinsert it. Check the model’s guide for correct orientation; a loose or reversed boom may not work correctly.
- Physical condition: Inspect the boom joint, cable, plug, inline controller, and connectors for looseness or visible damage.
RIG’s RIG 400 PC product page and RIG 500 support page describe model-specific microphone checks. Do not assume that a button or boom movement works the same way across the range.
Reseat the connection that matches your headset
Wired 3.5-mm headsets
- Unplug the headset and insert the plug fully; a partly seated plug can allow audio playback while the microphone contact fails.
- If the PC has one combined headset jack, connect the headset directly.
- If the PC has separate headphone and microphone sockets, use a compatible TRRS headset splitter to separate the headset plug into headphone and mic connections. A splitter is not needed for USB or wireless headsets.
- Try the rear motherboard audio jacks if the front-panel jack does not work. Confirm that the headset’s plug and PC jack are compatible.
Microsoft notes that computers may have separate headphone and microphone jacks or a combined connector in its Windows audio troubleshooting guide. The RIG 400 PC, for example, uses a 3.5-mm analog connection and a removable boom.
USB headsets and wireless receivers
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable or receiver, then try another USB port directly on the PC rather than an unpowered hub.
- Test both front and rear USB ports if available.
- For wireless RIG models, use the receiver specified for that exact headset and platform edition. Do not assume another RIG dongle will pair or work.
- Charge and power-cycle the headset; re-pair it only if the model supports pairing.
Microsoft recommends trying another USB port for USB audio devices. Model guides show the receiver connection for devices such as the RIG R8 and RIG 600 MAX.
Bluetooth headsets
Confirm that the headset is connected to the PC and that Windows and the app select its microphone input, not a different microphone. Bluetooth behavior and available input devices can vary by headset and connection mode; use the model’s manual rather than assuming its Bluetooth and USB receiver modes expose an identical device.

Select the RIG microphone and enable Windows access
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the RIG microphone and watch the input meter while speaking. If the meter moves but the recorded voice is faint, increase Input volume and repeat the test.
Then open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Enable access for the affected app if it appears in the list. Desktop programs may not be listed individually, so desktop-app access matters for software such as Discord, browsers, OBS, meeting apps, and many games. See Microsoft’s microphone permission instructions.
If Windows lists the RIG headset under output but not input, it may be receiving only the playback side. Recheck the analog jack and splitter, USB or receiver connection, and whether a recording device is disabled.
If Windows works, fix the app’s microphone settings
When the Windows test records your voice, stop reinstalling drivers and check the application that cannot hear you. Labels and menus differ, but look for these settings:

For a quiet signal, place the boom near your mouth and speak toward its capsule. Nacon recommends a distance of about 3–5 cm for relevant RIG microphones; follow your model’s guide because placement varies. Its microphone guidance also discusses app settings. Temporarily disable aggressive noise suppression or automatic gain control to check whether processing is removing your voice.
Use model-specific checks and software only when supported
| RIG headset type | Useful microphone check |
|---|---|
| RIG 400 and similar 3.5-mm models | Fully insert the plug and removable boom; check orientation and use a splitter only if the PC has separate headphone and microphone jacks. See the RIG 400 user guide. |
| RIG 500 models | Reseat the removable boom and check flip-to-mute behavior where fitted. See RIG 500 microphone guidance. |
| RIG 600 PRO and other wireless models | Check the matching USB receiver, connection mode, power, and pairing. Use a companion app only if the exact model supports it; see the RIG 600 PRO guide. |
| RIG 700 and RIG 800 | Check the exact variant’s mute control and matching wireless adapter. See RIG 700 guidance and RIG 700 HD support. |
| RIG 900 | Move the boom fully up and down to restore its flip-to-mute state, then power-cycle and check available firmware guidance. |
Nacon says to check firmware and power-cycle in its general microphone troubleshooting guide. RIG’s site promotes Navigator applications for selected models, including R8, RIG 600 PRO, and RIG 900 MAX; it is not a universal utility for every RIG headset. Check the RIG support portal and the exact product guide before installing software or looking for a firmware update.

If the microphone is still failing at the Windows level, Microsoft also recommends checking audio services. Open the Services app and, where available, restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder; Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is another listed service. The Windows 11 audio troubleshooter is available through the Get Help app. These tools may identify configuration problems, but they cannot fix a broken boom, jack, cable, or receiver. See Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance.
Windows 10 users can find microphone access at Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current primary workflow.
Test the headset on another device before replacing it
Connect the RIG headset to another compatible PC or device and make a recording or test call. If possible, also test a known-good headset on the original PC. RIG recommends cross-device testing in its RIG 400 support guidance.
- RIG mic works elsewhere: The original PC’s jack, splitter, USB port, driver, Windows setting, or app is the likely problem.
- RIG mic fails on multiple compatible devices: The boom, microphone, cable, receiver, or headset electronics may need service.
- Only the receiver fails or is missing: Ask support about the exact model and platform edition; do not assume another model’s dongle is compatible.
Contact RIG support or check the RIG warranty information if cross-device testing points to hardware failure or a connector is damaged. A TRRS splitter is appropriate only for a combined-plug analog headset used with separate PC jacks; a USB audio adapter may be a workaround for a faulty analog PC jack, not a repair for a failed headset microphone.
