What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choppy movement in Roblox usually comes from one of four sources: a slow or unstable connection, a device that cannot keep up with the graphics work, a device that is busy with other software, or an experience that is poorly built. Roblox’s own guidance separates these cases, and the quickest fix depends on which one you are seeing. If the picture itself stutters, start with graphics settings. If other players snap around the map or your actions respond late while the picture looks smooth, start with your connection.
Match the symptom to the cause
Roblox describes lag as a state where “an experience appears to stutter or slow down, causing players to appear to be warping around the experience” (Roblox Support, undated page). That definition covers several different problems, so the table below separates them by what you can see.
| What you notice | Category in Roblox guidance | What it usually points to | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other players warp around, or your actions take unusually long to register | Network lag | A slow or unstable connection | Test a wired connection if you can |
| The image stutters or looks choppy | Graphics lag | The device is not powerful enough for the work being asked of it | Turn off Graphics Quality – Auto and lower the level |
| Stutter that comes and goes, especially on a busy computer or phone | System lag | The device is under resource pressure from other software | Close unwanted high-power apps |
| Only one experience runs badly while others run fine | Not a named category | The experience may be poorly implemented or contain too many objects | Test another experience, then contact the creator |
Work out which symptom you have
Answer these three questions in order. Symptoms can overlap, so change one thing at a time and retest after each change.
- Does the picture itself stutter, freeze briefly, or look jerky while other players move normally? If yes, go to the graphics and system sections.
- Do other players jump or teleport, or do your clicks and actions respond late even when the picture looks smooth? If yes, go to the network section.
- Does the problem happen in every experience, or only in one? A single bad experience points to the experience itself.
Graphics lag: lower the graphics level
Graphics lag shows up as stuttering or choppy visuals when the device cannot keep up with the rendering work. Lowering the graphics level is the first change to try because it reduces the work the device has to do, at the cost of visual detail.

If the stutter is gone, the graphics level was the limiting factor. If it persists at the lowest level, move on to the system checks below.
Computer graphics drivers and graphics errors
On computers, outdated graphics drivers or changed graphics settings can contribute to poor visuals. This is one possible cause, not a universal explanation, so do not assume a driver update will fix choppy movement. If the screen shows visible corruption or Roblox reports a graphics error, Roblox Support’s graphics guidance lists old drivers and changed settings as possible causes. For the correct driver, use the download page of your graphics card’s manufacturer for your exact model.

System lag: free up the device
System lag happens when the device is under resource pressure, so Roblox has less processing power to work with. Heavy background software is the usual culprit: video editors, large downloads, screen recorders, and streaming tools are common examples. Close anything you do not need while playing, then retest.
Roblox Support notes that if the problem continues after graphics changes, a more powerful device may be needed. Treat that as the last step after the checks above, not the first.

Network lag: test a wired connection
Network lag appears as other players warping around or actions taking unusually long, even when the picture is smooth. Roblox Support recommends trying a wired connection when you need to rule out a wireless problem.
- If your computer can reach your router with an Ethernet cable, connect it directly.
- Play the same experience for a comparable stretch of time and watch for warping and delayed actions.
- Compare the results. If the wired connection clearly improves things, the wireless link is the weak point and you should look at Wi-Fi placement, interference, or your internet service. If nothing changes, the cause is probably not your wireless link.
A wired connection will not fix stuttering visuals or resource pressure, so it belongs only in this branch.

When one experience is the problem
Roblox Support notes that a single experience can run poorly because of how it was built or because it has too many objects. In that case, changing your own settings may not solve it. Test the problem by joining a different, well-known experience. If that one runs smoothly on the same device and connection, the experience you were playing is the likely cause. Report it to its creator, since they are the only ones who can repair the underlying build.
What the frame rate figures mean
Roblox Creator Hub documentation says experiences target 60 frames per second by default, which works out to one frame every 16.67 milliseconds when frame pacing is handled properly. Low or inconsistent frame rates make movement look less smooth and make controls feel less responsive. These are targets, not guarantees. A device or experience may not reach 60 FPS, and the page does not state a publication year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoblox’s performance documentation also covers profiling tools, but those are aimed at creators working in Roblox Studio rather than players, so they are not part of the steps above.
Limits of this guidance
Roblox’s official support and documentation pages on this topic do not show publication dates, so read the steps as general guidance rather than a diagnosis of your specific device, network, or Roblox client. This guide cannot confirm whether a current Roblox service problem is behind your lag. If choppy movement persists across experiences after the graphics, system, and wired-connection checks, a hardware upgrade or a service-side issue becomes more likely, and Roblox Support is the right place to report it.
