The fastest way to check is to run the game with Mods disabled. If the problem disappears, a Mod is involved and you can find it by restoring Mods in batches. If it stays after a clean test, repair the game through the EA app and gather details before contacting support. The symptom alone cannot tell you which situation applies to your game.
What usually causes a broken Build Mode
Electronic Arts’ help guidance on Mods and game updates says a Mod that worked before can start causing problems after a game update, because it may need to be updated or reinstalled to match the new version. This is the most common pattern to rule out first: the Build Mode problem appeared after an update, or after you installed or updated a Mod.

Interface and Build/Buy Mods
When the symptom is a missing or broken interface, Build/Buy and interface Mods are reasonable suspects. EA community troubleshooting threads name Better BuildBuy and UI Cheats Extension among Mods that people have associated with interface symptoms. Treat those names as leads to check against your current game version. Forum reports show that these Mods have been linked to problems; they do not prove that either one is responsible in your case.
Problems that persist without Mods
If the interface still misbehaves with every Mod turned off, the cause is not established by the sources reviewed. Those sources do not identify one non-Mod cause that explains every Build Mode symptom, so the next steps below focus on repairing the game and collecting details for support.

How to diagnose a broken Build Mode, step by step

Write down the details first. Note your platform, the game version (EA’s guidance says it is shown on the main menu), whether the problem began after a game update or after a Mod was installed or updated, and whether only Build/Buy is affected or the wider interface is too.

Test with Mods disabled. EA recommends this before re-enabling anything. Community troubleshooting also suggests temporarily moving the Mods folder aside and checking whether the problem persists. That is forum advice rather than an official guarantee, so use it as a diagnostic step, not a fix. Before loading any existing save during this test, read the saving warning in the section below.

If the symptom goes away, check each suspect Mod’s compatibility notes. Consult the creator’s current notes for your game version, then update or remove UI and Build/Buy Mods first. EA says gameplay Mods are more likely to cause problems than Custom Content, so when your symptoms fit, isolate gameplay Mods early.

Restore Mods in small batches. Put back a group of Mods, test Build Mode, and continue. Keep a written list of what each batch contains so you know which files were tested.

If a batch brings the symptom back, split that batch. Divide it in half, test again, and repeat until one Mod remains. EA describes this narrowing approach as the way to find the culprit without guessing at every file at once.

If the symptom persists with Mods disabled, repair the game in the EA app. Find The Sims 4 in your EA app library and use the repair option it offers. Menu labels in the EA app can change, so follow the wording the current app shows.

If it still persists after repair, contact EA support or check current bug-report channels. Bring your platform, game version, exact symptom, and the results of each test you ran.

Protect your saves while testing
EA advises exiting without saving when you test with Custom Content or Mods disabled. Saving while Custom Content is disabled may remove that content from the save, and the removal can persist after you turn Mods back on. If you need to check a save, load it, look at what you need, and quit without saving until your Mods are restored.
Searches that describe the same problem
Players often describe this problem as “build mode not working,” “missing ui/interface,” or “disappearing UI after build mode.” These phrases come from EA community forum threads, and they point to the same diagnostic branch. Use the steps above whichever wording matches your situation.
What the evidence does and does not show
EA states that “Maxis and EA don’t pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content.” Use Mods with that in mind, and read the creator’s compatibility notes before you install or update one. The sources behind this guidance are EA’s official help article on Mods, game updates, and error codes, and EA community forum threads that describe individual cases.
No published figure shows how often Mods cause Build Mode problems. The forum threads are individual player reports and community troubleshooting, so they show what has happened to some players, not how often it happens. Official EA guidance may change over time, so check the current help article if its wording differs from what you see.
