If KinitoPET closes at launch or crashes shortly after it starts on a Steam Deck, the strongest lead in the available evidence is Proton, the compatibility layer that runs Windows games on SteamOS. A Proton bug report opened in January 2024 describes launch failures under several Proton builds, and a May 2024 Proton Experimental changelog entry lists the game as newly playable. Start by forcing Proton Experimental, then work through the checks below in order. No single step is a confirmed fix for every crash, and the most recent dated game-specific evidence is from May 2024, so confirm the current state on your own Deck.
What the dated evidence actually shows
- January 14, 2024: A user report in the ValveSoftware/Proton issue tracker says KinitoPET failed to start under Proton 8.0-4, Proton Experimental, and GE-Proton8-27. Sometimes a black window appeared briefly before the game closed. The reporter said launching the executable through system Wine worked on a separate Linux PC. That is an observation about a different machine, not a recommended Steam Deck procedure.
- May 23, 2024: The Proton Experimental changelog included the line “Now playable: KinitoPET.” Steam Deck HQ (Noah Kupetsky) reported it at the time. It is a short changelog statement, not a guarantee of how the game behaves on any particular Deck today.
- When the issue was checked: The Proton issue page was still open and labelled as a compatibility report. It does not link a confirmed fix commit, so it neither proves the bug is resolved nor proves it is still present.
Taken together, these points make a Proton compatibility change the best-supported starting point. They do not establish that every KinitoPET crash has the same cause.

Check the current Steam Deck rating first
Valve labels Steam Deck games as Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. Ratings change as Valve reviews more games and as games and SteamOS update, so look at the current label in the Steam Library or on the Steam Store page rather than relying on an older article. Valve’s Verified description reads “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” That sentence defines the Verified category; it does not mean KinitoPET holds that label.

Published PC requirements do not settle Deck compatibility
Steam’s KinitoPET page lists these minimum requirements for Windows PCs:

Meeting these figures on a Windows PC does not show that the game runs on a Deck, which uses SteamOS and Proton rather than Windows.
Seven troubleshooting steps, in order
Change one setting at a time and write down what you changed. Only step 2 has game-specific evidence behind it. The others are standard diagnostic checks.

1. Install pending updates and restart
Update SteamOS, the Steam client, and KinitoPET itself, then restart the Deck. This removes an outdated-software variable. The sources reviewed here do not show that any particular SteamOS, Steam, or game build fixes or breaks KinitoPET, so treat this as housekeeping rather than a known fix.
2. Force Proton Experimental for KinitoPET
This is the step with direct game-specific support, because the May 2024 changelog reported the game as newly playable under Proton Experimental. In Desktop Mode, right-click KinitoPET in the Library, choose Properties, open Compatibility, tick “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool,” and select Proton Experimental. In Gaming Mode, open the game’s page in the Library, then the settings gear, then Properties and Compatibility. Menu wording can differ between SteamOS releases, so match the labels you actually see. Launch the game after each change.
3. Return to the default setting or compare another official Proton version
If Proton Experimental still fails, clear the forced tool so the game uses Steam’s default, or select another installed official Proton version from the same Compatibility menu. Record the version each time. The 2024 report named Proton 8.0-4 and GE-Proton8-27 among the builds that failed, so a different choice is a comparison, not a claim that one version is currently better.
4. Verify the installed game files
Open the game’s Properties, go to Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam will check for damaged or missing files and redownload anything it finds. None of the KinitoPET-specific evidence reviewed here identifies corrupted files as the cause, so this is a routine check.

5. Compare Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode
Try launching the game once in Gaming Mode and once in Desktop Mode if that is convenient. Note the exact behavior: a brief black window, an immediate return to the library, or a crash later in play. The 2024 Proton report reproduced on desktop Linux under both X11 and Wayland. That shows the issue is not limited to one display stack, but it does not establish that the Deck shows the same cause.

Open Settings, then Storage, to see how much space is free. Steam’s 850 MB figure is the listed minimum, and meeting it does not prove that low storage is causing the crash. Reinstall only if the installation looks incomplete or file verification does not help. Before you uninstall, look for any save files you can locate and back them up.

7. Contact the developer with specific details
Steam Support’s KinitoPET page links to the developer’s customer support, product site, and product forums. Those are the current channels to use. Include the following so the developer can act on the report:
- Deck model and SteamOS version
- Steam and KinitoPET versions, if shown
- The Proton tool you selected, including whether it was Proton Experimental or another build
- Whether the game ever reaches its menu or intro screen
- Exact symptoms, such as a black screen, an error message, or a crash after a specific action
Avoid deleting compatibility data early
Do not delete Proton prefixes, compatibility data, or save files as an early step. The sources reviewed here do not show that this is needed or safe for KinitoPET. If a support response recommends it, ask what user data it would affect and back up your saves first.
Why the Proton lead is still the one to test first
The Proton issue remains the only game-specific record that connects KinitoPET to a launch failure and to a later compatibility change. Because the evidence is dated and the issue page does not show a confirmed fix, test the setting and record the result rather than assuming the 2024 update applies to your current software.
